You can trust the description in "Lonely Planet" again.
El Calafate is a remote town and that is why things are more expensive there.
My room was lovely. I felt that La Loma was very good value and the staff were very helpful and enabled me to make the most of the two days I had in El Calafate.

On arrival staff were unprepared and unwelcoming, no smiles and they didn't seem to have our reservation so go armed with your confirmation e-mail. We were not told the wifi code, the facilities available, the breakfast times or general rules...I don't know if she thought we just wanted to get into our room but it would have been nice to have been told the basics on arrival.

We stayed in dorm 9 which was a four bed female dorm. The beds were very old and the mattresses are foam which were comfortable enough. The pillows are good and you have clean sheets however the over sheets have not been washed for months and have some staines and marks that need sorting out. You also get clean towels along with soap and shampoo. In number 9 we have a wet room bathroom - sometimes the water was either boiling or freezing, maybe needs looking at. I found that keeping it at low pressure works better.

You can lock your room door however there are no lockers in the rooms. The windows have bars on them but you can't lock the windows. The area seems safe enough but you never know,

Breakfast was on time everyday and the food was fine with home made bread, cake, cornflakes, jam, stewed apples, coffee, milk, hot water...etc It was sometimes slowly refilled however I'm sure if you asked the lady who ran breakfast she would refill what you needed. She was always chirpy and would say good morning which was nice.

The swimming pool is fantastic, warm, clean, 2m deep however unsupervised so if you have kids be careful. The garden which the property surrounds is superb, so well kept and you often see the gardener working away when crossing the garden.

The location is great, WiFi was strong throughout - if you want to know about tours or things to do in the area you're left to ask rather than be guided and someone is available most of the time in the office to arrange whatever you fancy.

Overall, I think this hostel/hotel needs a bit of a re-vamp to bring it up to modern standards however the charm of the wood and the garden was lovely. Generally this place is good, it's just the staff that don't seem to sell it.

I'd STRONGLY recommend steering clear of this sketchy hotel. Fellow travelers have told me that there are many other good hotel options in El Calafate, and I'm sure that anyone could find some wonderful suggestions here at tripadvisor.com. The service that we encountered at La Loma was rediculously bad for any price range, much less a hotel that claims to cater to higher-end clientele. And do think twice before giving La Loma your credit card number to hold a reservation. Their stringent cancellation policy would be difficult for Harry Houdini to escape from. This hotel was operated in very poor taste...

I stayed with my girlfriend for two nights in january 2006 paying around 300 pesos per night for a double room. The rooms were quite horrible. The rooms in the wing that looks opposite to the lago argentino are particularly horrible, small and smelly.

We therefore decided to upgrade to a room in the lago argentino wing. Here the rooms were much bigger although you could still feel the smell of humidity. The rooms were not well kept. The bed cloth was stained and dirty and we could not have a hot shower on our first night. The following day we then moved to another room which was nicer (yet it did smell) and had hot water.

The breakfast was quite cheap. It included instant orange juice, that for a hotel that charges almost 100 dollars per night in argentina seems quite poor.

It is a pitty that the hotel is so poorly run because the environment is lovely and the common rooms have a lot of charm. Unfortuntely the rest is not up to standard.

this hotel claims to be much more than it is. if you agree to pay 100 usd for a better youth-hostel this is your place (i guess about 20 usd would be a fair price for this service). some rooms are empty (only a bed...nothing (!) else), others are smelly and the third ones are furnished in colors you would not wish your enemy.

however, all of them are noisy and if you want to be part of the most intimate conversations of the people in the neighbouring room- here you have it.

i consider this the worst money-value deal of the entire trip to chile and argentina. and i am afraid i am not alone with this observation.

my recommendation: go somewhere else!!!!

Location is great, near to the town centre, main reception area is pleasant and gardens are well maintained.

However, the hotel itself really is the pits. Our room was dark, dank and smelly. Walls are paper thin and traffic noise can clearly be heard outside. The bathroom was disgusting with a makeshift shower over the toilet and rotten timber cladding. My husband and I both contracted a sore throat - perhaps in part attributed to the awful mouldy smell in the room.

Staff were on the whole fairly unpleasant (when you could actually locate someone), with the exception of one girl who was friendly.

To charge £50 a night for a place like this is a disgrace. We would definitely not recommend it at all.

Hello Rebecca, Thank you for your comments. Their criticisms have a lot of truth but also anger makes the information is not entirely fair. If your description was accurate we would not have so many good reviews or satisfied customers. The reality is that you reserved in the sector we call ECONOMY, the oldest part of the hotel. We also have standard and superior rooms. ECONOMY In the main flaw is that the shower wets the toilet. These baths were built many years ago and is something that can not be fixed, but we plan to do all the building again and convert this sector in a shared hostel. It is noteworthy that the current price of the room you paid is less than half that of a standard. Greetings,

This was so far the worst hotel experience in Patagonia. We booked a double room for 4 nights, two months in advance, and thought we'd have a nice room. But our experience at this hotel was horrible. We were given an old smelly room, very thin walls, we could hear the people in the next room snoring, talking, walking. The door was smaller than the frame, so all the light from the hallway passed thought it at night. The window's lock in the bedroom and bedroom were broken, and open due to strong and cold wings, so the room was ice cold at night, and when it's 5° outside, well.... Low water pressure in the shower and all the water floods the bathroom floor.
Breakfast is not bad, but neither fresh food, nor food with no sugar added. The pool's water was dirty. In general, is a well located hotel, but not worth the money we paid. I do not recommend it AT ALL. In the time we stayed there, they never changed the sheets or towels. Plus the crew is polite, but very indifferent. The woman in charge of breakfast was not very welcoming or friendly. The rest were ok. Wifi was bad, so bad that many guests had to go to the lobby to connect, and even like that, connection was bad.

Mostly a mismatch of pretenciousness, bad service and quality.
Worst hotel experience we had in Argentina so far. Nicely decorated hotel with "antique" furniture but missing basic facilities for a hotel. The grounds are well kept and the garden is well maintained but the rooms are not. The bathroom, badly planned to start with has the wood of the walls covers rotten (and having a shower area covered in wood is a "smelly" idea it start with). The sink is moving on its handles.
The room was overheated with only one window ready to be opened and the heater blasting day and night. The nearby streat noise is keeping us awake late in the night.
The rooms have no phone and no TV set and the free WiFi signal is very weak in many areas ( inexistent in our room). Not having a reception connected phone means that for everything you may need from the hotel you must either call a cellphone and none is given or you must walk to the receiption. Service was also surprisingly bad. The reception person refused our request to have the hotel confirm the hotel pickup with a tour company claiming that they cannot make long distance call (the number was local). The morning receiption person starts the shift after the calling time of tour companies and the front door is kept locked (by some order).
Breakfast has bad coffee, one cereal to choose and sweets. Hardly a decent breakfast.
The bed is fitted with foam matress smaller than the frame.
The beading is rough and unpleasant.

Fortunately for us we had to stay only two nights (prepaid otherwise we would have left immediately).

Avoid this hotel. We can hardly understand the grading it got on Trip Advisor or the fact that it is called a hotel (I doubt it fits the Argentinian standard for a hotel).

Yikes!I can only assume that by having a pool is what has given this place an extra "star" to add up to its 2star rating. I didn't rate it at all. It is a glorified hostel which is absolutely fine...if it is priced accordingly, pitched & sold as that (bear in mind there is a hostel attached but we had booked a "hotel" room). However, they are charging prices for rooms and facilities and calling it hotel level which it isn't. Rooms are clean but very, very worn, and dated. Towels are clean but so worn, bobbled and well used. Beds are small (double bed is a large single but isn't a double, even a small double). The beds are made up with old blankets and covers; and bathrooms are...well, one review described them as interesting but seriously, this is really stretching it - the shower head is over the toilet and management and staff attempt to say this is a deliberate design but really its just fobbing off bad facilities and expecting people to accept this "design". This is not what an ensuite shower should be - that along with carpet stretching into the bathroom as well and the "shower" (i.e. the standing area in front of the toilet) not having a shower curtain. No doubt another deliberate unique architectural design! There is a lingering smell in the rooms - could be because its so old and owners are keeping this as its unique selling point but there is a difference between being old, quaint and comfortable and just being old, and cheap. Again, as a hostel and if you are paying hostel prices - fine; but when you are trying to pass it off as a hotel - it simply just doesn't make that rating in my opinion. As the opening line suggests, if you take away the fact it has a swimming pool (which is a nice little facility to have)and a nice little garden area than it just doesn't have anything else offer and the reality is that you will be spending the majority of your time in this "hotel" in your room (rest of the time you will be out hiking and eating!) so it should be appealing, comfortable & cosy. There is no TV and no tea/coffee making facilities. There are also metal bars on the windows on the ground floor! Not an appropriate safety feature but a scary fire hazard. The outside looks lovely and enticing as does the reception area but then, the rooms are just so disappointing: poor , worn out linens and towels & lingering smells in rooms and corridors wasn't to my taste. Very disappointed. El Chalten is itself is just one main street with a few supermarkets and lots of bars & restaurants, and most accommodation is either along this or just one or two short blocks away. Everything is so close and "Hotel" La Loma is no closer to anything than any other place, hence my recommendation would be to look somewhere else with decent proper towels, beds, linen, bathrooms and showers as everything is within walking distance of the bus station & facilities.
