Great place, well located in the winelands, not too far from the airport to get to and close to shops etc. if needed. As a whole, highly recommended. Facilities are great and for a relaxed get away you don't need to leave the property for anything.

Poor value for money. Rates are excessive compared to other much more luxurious offerings in SA. Rooms are sub-standard. Bathrooms are outdated. Great venue at half the current rates. Breakfast offering was average and quality was poor.

I stayed at Spier with my family in January this year and we had a wonderful time. We had two rooms. The rooms are huge and well decorated. There is a lovely tea and coffee station which i appreciated too. The pools were lovely and of good size. Our room overlooked a private courtyard pool which we all enjoyed and i'd recommend these rooms, particularly if you had children. Breakfast was good - lots of variety and you can order tea/ coffee's according to your preference. We did a wine tasting which was lovely. We were served by a lady called Bokeng (i hope i have her name correct) and she was brilliant - her knowledge was excellent and her service tailored. Definitely ask for her if you do the tasting - she really was excellent. I'd HIGHYLY recommend staying at Spier.

On the positive side: the art throughout is stunning, the gardens are beautiful, Spier seems socially and environmentally conscious (other than the single use coffee pods!), the wine is nice, and Kimberly the manager was a great, lovely professional. On the negative side: it’s overrun with kids! Loud children everywhere, bouncing balls in the dining room, climbing on seats, disturbing the peace – even in the wine tasting room. If you’re a family, you’ll probably like it. But they sold us a “romance package” and the entire experience was far from romantic – do not book Spier as a couple looking for down time. Our other main complaint is the false advertising on the website: the Signature Riverside Terrace Rooms have zero view of the river or mountains, despite the higher price. And from only a small part of the patio does the wine tasting room have a mountain view, despite the website saying “spectacular mountain views” – just tone down the language, Spier. Otherwise, we had a couple of housekeeping issues, the food was average, and in the ground floor room we could hear every footstep above us. If Spier can address some of these challenges, it would be a decent 4/5 star destination for families. In short: a more intimate accommodation like Boschendal was far better.

Room Tip: Don’t book Spier as a couple! Book an upstairs room due to footstep noise.
