Having recently visited SA from Canada, we used our RCI timeshare exchange and had a week’s family vacation. This was a wonderful resort to spend time with family catering for all. The accommodation was exceptionally comfortable and suitable for a big family. The resort is very well maintained and staff were always willing to please, stop for a conversation and take care of any concerns immediately. The ultimate bonus was the location of our unit, only meters away from very regular game visitors or our doorstep. The proximity to the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve made this trip an authentic safari visit, back to the wilderness of Southern Africa.

Kwa Maritane is a five star resort and there can be no complaints. For timeshare swops they have different grades available, namely Cabanas, Normal chalets, Luxury chalets and Executive chalets. We were booked to stay in the Executive Chalet and we found it difficult to find out from the public information, what was different about the Executive versus the other on offer.
The setting of all the chalets is magnificent as you have your own unit which opens up onto the game reserve just ten meters from your lounge door. What makes the Executive special, especially in the middle of winter, is that it has its own private heated pool. At at time when water pipes were freezing in Johannesburg after sunset, we were swimming in our private pool, having a braai and drinks, and watching wild game passing in the reserve a few meters away. A couple of families with kids had a ball with the winter swimming in their own pools during the day.
The unit has three bedrooms, the main en-suite, one at the back and one upstairs. These last two bedrooms share a bathroom. The unit has a large lounge and a small kitchen which even squeezes in a dishwasher. Catering facilities are for eight visitors. The unit is airconditioned and so no need for separate heaters even in the middle of winter. Braai facilities are a gas skottel braai and a wood braai of the plowshear type that you find in the Kruger Park.
A really neat feature was that when we arrived, we were welcomed with a cheese plate and biscuits and a personal handwritten letter from the manager - never had that before in any other resort.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and the units are serviced daily.
Kwa Maritane is known for a waterhole that is observed from a birdhide. The entrance is in the main complex and there is a 120 meter tunnel underground linking the birdhide to the hotel, allowing one to get really close to the waterhole and watch the animals, birds and water life. They also have fitted the hide with excellent movement detection cameras that send the pictures from the birdhide back to each of the chalets to show on your TV screen, both in the lounge and bedroom. The camera system operates 24 hours and switches views based on movement detection, allowing you to observe the animals even in the middle of the night.
The facility has internet WiFi in the chalets. Being well screened by hills, both internet and cellphone reception from outside towers was poor but afterall that is why you came tothe reserve to get away from it all. The units have DSTV with most of the chanels including News and Sports.
For us the pool made a huge difference as it was the middle of winter in South Africa and we had been deprived of swimming for a few months due to temperatures.

We have been going to this lovely resort from nearly 30 years as a hotel guest and a timeshare owner. The rooms are comfortable and the timeshare units well stocked. The bedding is clean and changed every day although on our arrival, there was clear indications that the bedding had not been checked due to the thatch pieces lying on the bed.
The food in the restaurant is wholesome although the Friday night seafood buffet is expensive and wasn't as good as we remembered. The a la carte menu was understandably limited but fairly priced and food was excellent and portions sufficient.
It would have been nice to have seen or interacted with some management at some point during our 6 night stay.
A visit to the spa was pleasant, professional and clean but not cheap and the staff need to stop trying to upsell salon products to the guests.
Although we did not go on an official resort game drive but chose to explore the park in our own rented vehicle, it would have been nice to have had some interaction with the game ranger staff during dinner as they were standing around at the entrance of the restaurant talking amongst themselves.
We were hugely impressed by the Pilansberg National Park abultion facilities at the various hides, which were clean, well stocked with soap and toilet paper. This was a pleasant surprise.
Reception personnel and timeshare administrative staff were at all times professional and efficient.

The property is neat, well kept and the staff very friendly. I do feel that it is overpriced compared to other similar resorts. The B&B option is value but the DBB and game drive option is, in my opinion, not worth it. It would be better to book B&B and go the a la carte route for better value. The room was neat and had all the amenities needed for a pleasant stay. The watering hole and hide were wonderful and you even had the opportunity to see the hide via your room TV. The night we watched however, the operator felt it was more fun to zoom in to view guest hotel rooms than watch animals in the hide. This did make us feel uncomfortable.
The game drive was not as enjoyable as it could have been due to the roads being so bad it made the ride extremely uncomfortable. The animal sightings were good and the area lovely but you literally have to hang on to dear life in order to endure the road. I realize the game viewing is third party to the hotel but I also felt this was overpriced for the experience. Large trucks are used and clearly had not been cleaned properly as we found litter in the seat pockets from a previous guest which we felt wasn't acceptable in a COVID world. The ranger spoke as if on automatic mode and didn't fully engage with the guests. The snacks and drinks offered mid safari were a nice touch. In future I would opt for a smaller vehicle with a more personalized service.

Sadly for a local South African the resort itself is very expensive, the cost for the accommodation is defiantly not value for money and the restaurant is exceptionally over priced if you paying in ZAR. As timeshare owners we generally have a rule to have at least one meal in the restaurant to support them but as we no longer get any discount and with the current pricing, it has become increasing difficult to do this.
The units have not been attended to and are very neglected. A few issues we had, the shower in the main bathroom (bath/shower) was actually unusable. The shower head sprayed everywhere except into the bath and is way to high up.
The shower curtain kept blowing into the bathtub and sticking to your body, cannot believe that a shower curtain is still be used!
The ceiling fan was falling out and blows extremely hard.
There were cobwebs in the corner of the shower.
The unit had a terrible damp smell when we first arrived, almost like the carpets or couches were cleaned and then the unit was closed up.
The second shower head needs replacement or a very good clean.
All the cushions on the dining chairs are dirty and have stains/marks on them.
There was no dishwasher powder/tablets and no dish-washing salt supplied (the machine is indicating that it needs salt). Should you not supply these items, guests should be informed.
We had to have all the pillows in the unit replaced they were terrible and we were rather embarrassed that our guests staying with us where to polite to mention this and only said something after we brought the issue up.
The linen is stained and marked.

My family and I visited Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge in the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve during April 2019. The Lodge is a little dated but clean and attractive. The rooms and bathrooms are clean, comfortable and spacious. The staff are friendly and efficient. Dinner is buffet style, and offers plenty of choice. Dinner/breakfast and daily bush drive can be booked as a reasonably priced package. The patio of the dining area has a bird's eye view of a small watering hole where many animals(including Elephants and Rhino) and birds visit daily- lovely! The pool area is appealing and there are a few other activities available on site. Sun City is 5 minutes down the road which makes combining a bush break with a visit to Valley of the waves, many adventure activities, shopping, gambling or entertainment really easy. Our bush drives at Kwa Maritane were outstanding. Our guide was so knowledgable. Over the 3 drives we saw many large herds, of Elephants, Zebra, Giraffe and buck (Kudu, Wildebeest, Springbok, Impala,, Tsesebe), Lion prides, a Leopard (night drive), white Rhino, Warthogs, Brown Hyena, Black backed Jackals and Hippos. We also saw many birds of prey and other bird species. An awesome experience all round.

We recently visited the bush lodge and on a daily basis the service from the restaurant was not acceptable. Waiting time are long for anything that’s not available from the buffet. Trying to get attention from waiters was near impossible. Toast comes in soft when it finally arrives. Getting drinks to the table in time is never a reality. Bad looks from waitress’s when complaints are made for delays. Clearing tables takes really long. And no signs of of any management to get this in order.

Waitress often told us on non availability of items when asked ie still water being one of the items which is pathetic for a bush lodge.

Food served is highly limited and desserts are of poor quality. Extremely sweet.

The management of this facility needs to understand what service really means at a restaurant.

We have to deplore the attitude of the staff, which is not efficient and friendly,
the cleanliness (balconies, swimming pool that are full of birds droppings, dust, dead leaves, etc.), the quality of the food, particularly the prepared meals and the desserts.
The safaris (game drives) should be more exciting to live more interesting experiences (the vehicules never go off road).
The hotel don't change the towels if there is no counterindication from the customers.
It is not clean under the beds.
The managers should stop the stupid controls of the driving licences at the entrance and at the exit.
The codes (password/user name) to login to the internet are complicated and not accurate.
We had a problem with the card to get into our room just before leaving, which was urgent since the room was afar and my familly waiting stupidely outside. The staff treated me with despise and unefficiency, which looks unfortunately a too common behaviour every day. I don't understand why the access was not possible just before the official time for checking out. In addition, the previous day I asked one of the staff at the reception if the card could be updated with a one-hour more later check-out and she said it was not possible (I never saw this in any other hotel equiped with this kind of pass...)! The staff is unfriendly, too proud and not professional enough according to the international standards.
During the diner we were brutally asked by one waitress to pay immediately by cash our beverage, despite we were not informed before about this rule and that, above all, it is absolutely not an obligation to proceed this way (we finally paid our beverages when checking out).

Dear chamalow123, Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Please do find my response to your raised points. The cleanliness: Please note that our swimming pools and balconies are cleaned daily. With the lodge being situated in a bush, it is difficult to avoid bird droppings, dust, and leaves. And our gardens and housekeeping teams are always available to come clean should you request them to. But it is difficult, looking at our surroundings to not have birds dropping visible. Safari Drives: Unfortunately our game drives vehicles are restricted by Parks Board to drive on the demarcated authorized roads for the safety of our guests. Not changing of towels: With regards to the changing of the towels, we have put in notifications in our hotel rooms informing guests that should they require us to change their towels they should leave them inside the bathtub if not our housekeeping ladies will not collect it. We encourage reusing towels as a water-saving initiative (This is optional). Access card: My apologies for how your request was handled, and I have taken this matter up with our Front office manager to address it with his front office team. Secondly, our system is set up in a way that we cannot update your key card to an hour later than the scheduled check out time. With that said our team member should have advised you on other alternative ways which we have avoided you been locked out of your room and for this I do sincerely apologize. Controls of driver's license at the entrance: Please note that we cannot stop this process as it is for the safety of our guests. Treatment at the Restaurant: Our Food and Beverage Manager is investigating the issue raised and will address it with the restaurant team. As much as I have provided feedback on the above comments, I would like to state that we take pride in ourselves for providing great service and a great experience for our guests. We, on the other hand, welcome constructive criticisms and act with integrity to address these issues. To help us also in dealing effectively with the raised matters, please do contact the lodge and ask to speak to Wandile Ngxesha ( Guest Relations). Once again, thank you for your time in providing feedback. Most regards, Wandile Ngxesha Guest Relations Officer

My husband and I stayed here for the first time for part of the Easter weekend. The hotel room although rustic, had all needed amenities, including a much needed airconditioner. My only recommendation would be to add more lighting. My favourite part were the chairs/table on the small balcony which provided an ideal place to relax and take in the ambience of the tranquil surroundings. I was impressed with the friendliness and thorough service of the cleaning staff, including the turn-down service.
Having specific dietary requirments, I am most grateful to Chef Jurgen who accommodated us throughout the weekend. Breakfast was definitely a highlight for me! Regarding the game drives, I was impressed with the knowledge of the guides, but disappointed with the lack of social distancing and non-insistence of wearing masks during game drives.
I cant speak to any of the other facilities as we did not use them due to a lack of time. Our time was rather spent in the park, which was well worth it as we saw most animals including lion, cheetah and leopard, All in all a great weekend and I will recommend Kwa Maritane in future.
