Pelan Pelan is a wonderful, relaxing surf retreat. We had a lovely time, which was made even better by the fantastic, caring staff and owners. It was my first time surfing, and I was a bit nervous about the waves, but our surf guide (Tomo) supported me, helped me make progress everyday and now I am sad to leave!
My husband had not tried yoga before, but the instructors supported him and Sida pushed me (literally) further than I’ve gone before!
The massages included in our package helped make the week even more relaxing. I also had a facial from Erin, which I would definitely recommend paying the extra for.
We definitely recommend going on the Wednesday afternoon trip (don’t forget to take cash). Gustu was a fantastic driver, he came with us to each of the stops, shared his knowledge and helped to take photos. We also used the transport and shuttle services which were helped us to explore the nearby restaurants and beaches. During our stay, for dinner, we went to Hippie Fish and Shelter in Pererenan, as well as Casa Tua and La Brisa in Canggu, all of which we would recommend. We also had dinner delivered to the retreat, which was helpful on the days that we wanted to continue relaxing by the pool.
The included breakfast and lunch was always fresh and tasty, with lunch being a great opportunity to try local food. The extra food and drink available was a great selection too and very reasonably priced.
We hope to come back one day!

Came to this place very tired, but left this place with so much energie! Been here for two weeks, but could stay forever. I can confirm that all the good reviews are really true. It is amazing and ALL the staff make it possible to make this place to a cozy, family-feeling, relaxing place. I had so much fun while surfing with Alit, my surfinstructor. He learned me a lot and I felt safe and seen all the time! Thanks for all the good food, so surprisingly delicious every single day. Looked forward to my massages, because they were amazing! Always left the place with a good feeling. First time ever that I tried yoga, and i am not flexible at all, but that didnt matter. I got the purpose and loved it after all! I enjoyed walking to the garden, which they care for with a lot of love. Thanks to the housekeeping for the clean room every single day! Last but not least: thanks for the good and fun times Lely and Lode! You're amazing woman (and receptionists) and as you know: i loved listening to your singing during your work. Thanks for all the little concerts! Had really good, nice and fun times with all the other guests i met. Everyone was so friendly, open and easy to communicate with. We had the best days while talking but also hanging around with each other when everyone did what they wanted: reading, listening to music, swimming, writing, sleeping etc. In case i forget someone: thanks you for making my holiday! This is the trip of a lifetime - and I will definitely be coming back!
The team is fantastic: reception organises our days very smoothly and with your enjoyment in mind, the driver Gustu takes you on any trip you like and gives you insider tips on what to do, the food is incredible and fresh every day, and the rooms are kept in a great and comfortable state. The entire team has a lovely attitude!
The surf instructors are very knowledgeable, ensure you are always safe and feel confident in the water. My surf improved a lot!

As soon as I saw the HUGE fluffy bath sheet on my beautifully made bed (complete with flowers) I knew it was going to be a good trip. Five stars for the thoughtful touches to our rooms. I booked Pelan Pelan at short notice for a week on the surf package with additional surfing each afternoon (a great holiday workout!). Pretty much from day one at breakfast - food gets 5 stars too - I had connected with the other like minded guests so had a perfect mix of my own time and cool people to hang out with in the evenings. Surf coaches are fab as are the reception and kitchen and ground staff.... everyone was in fact and hospitality could not be faulted. I would 100% recommend Pelan Pelan if you're a first time solo traveller or it's your first time in Bali - it's a nice way to ease yourself in. Having said that as a regular to Bali over many years I would also come back again with friends. Thanks Emma and Putu for creating a beautiful resort with a lovely chilled vibe.

What a great place here at Pelan Pelan. It is really a home away from home. The entire staff go above and beyond for your needs. I have met some great people and had lots of fun. The surfing and yoga are also very good and diverse. I have learned a lot! The food and drinks are delicious, all fresh and local foods served during breakfast and lunch, I just love it. The room is great and the housekeepers always put a beautiful flower on the bed after they made it! I will definately return here some day. Perfect retreat for exploring, chilling, relaxing, excersise and have fun!

What an amazing place tucked away in the rice fields around Canggu!
First, booking and payment was super straightforward with great communication. And then, from the moment I arrived in Bali and was met at the airport by Wayan, I felt like I was really being cared for.
The room was clean and comfortable, the food was healthy and delicious, the ‘compound’ of rooms / restaurant / yoga and massage rooms was quiet and out of the way, but close enough to get some life in Canggu at the end of the day if that’s what you want. But that’s not really why you’re thinking of coming here.
Thanks to Lely and Lode for sorting out everything from transport to food and laundry, and making sure that everything was running smoothly. As a novice yoga-er, the classes were pitched really well for challenge and support. The expert massages included in the ‘get it all’ package were exactly what was needed after a day of surfing.
And then there’s the surfing - I was expertly guided by Putu for all 5 of my surf sessions and the video analysis. Groups were small - mainly 2 learners per instructor, but sometimes 1-1. By the end of the week I was riding waves that I never thought I’d be catching - thank you Putu 🙏.
All in all, a great place with fantastic people and I’ve made some amazing memories and friends. Just book it.

I’ve just finished a great 7 night stay at Pelan Pelan with a ‘get it all package’. The retreat is situated slightly outside of Canggu in the middle of rice paddies and for my was a perfect mix of surf/yoga/chill - especially for someone new to it all and wanting a taster. As it’s a small place Emma, Putu and the team took the time to get to know you and were really welcoming. It also means you get to meet all of the other guests which is great for a solo traveller. I was in the shared 3 bed room behind reception - the room is large and each double bed has its own mosquito curtains which gives you some privacy too. Would love to come back!

Okay, I don't know where to start. This is the third time I've been to Pelan Pelan and this time I stayed for almost 2 months. I needed a break from home and work and I knew that I could make good use of that break here.
I was once again warmly welcomed by the Pelan family, and I immediately felt so happy. As I was already familiar with all the possibilities at Pelan Pelan, I was able to dive myself quickly into the “slow life” or the "Balinese life" again.
The day starts early and sweet with delicious banana bread and coffee or a nice breakfast and with super cool surf sessions and ends with great get-togethers with other guests at the table or pool, or going out in Perereran or Canggu.
The healthy lunch cooked by Eny and Kadek is just sensational and I never got bored! I really like Balinese food and obviously my stomach was also very happy because I felt more energized and good!
I was also able to attend a surf coach's wedding and I am so grateful to the Pelan family for letting me have this beautiful experience (Terima Kasih banyak!).
The many Balinese massages from Puspa and Erin that I had were simply fantastic, I can only recommend them :-)
Now about the surf sessions...what else can I say here... it was a total success for me! As I was always struggling with fears in the water, I can now say that I have made great progress, especially mentally. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my surfcoach Komang who has supported me from the very beginning - Suksma! Without his support I wouldn't have got this far. Surfing is not easy, but I have learned to deal better with fear in the water and all the laughter we had in the water has made everything easier and at the end I really had fun in the water!
The trip with the lovely driver Gustu was also amazing, he took care of us and he also made very nice pictures from the trip!
A big thank you to Lode and Lelly for the great dances and laughs we had together! And a big thank you to Putu and Hery for always cleaning my room. And also a big thank you to the security guys Wayan and Esa who were always there when there were cute little spiders that scared me in the room ;-)
What a pity that the 2 months are already over :-( It was very hard for me to leave the Pelan family but I know that I will be back soon. Be prepared for something ;-)

Emma and Putu along with their staff whom they treat like family do an amazing job offering their guests a wonderful stay.
This is a small, intimate boutique style resort set among the beautiful rice fields of Cemagi. Many of the beaches are within a 15 to 20 minute scooter ride. Emma, Putu and staff are always helpful in arranging rides to where you might want to go (they also have scooters available at no charge). Here you will have usually no more than 15 -18 guests staying at one time. The surfing and yoga classes are well thought out and customized to each persons level. Instruction is individual with each instructor having only 2 students per session (often one on one in off season). I had never surfed or ever lived near an ocean, but by the end of my stay was surfing with more confidence and an understanding of catching the waves.
The Yoga instruction is some of the best available on the island. The instructors are very accomplished and capable in nearly all styles of practice, they have taught for many years and in fact have taught a lot of the other instructors you will find on the island.
This stay is a complete package. Including Surf, Yoga,, Breakfast and lunch M-F, and Massages. The breakfasts and lunches are, fresh healthy and delicious. Many of the dishes are authentic Balinese dishes from local ingredients and wonderfully prepared.
The massages are simply incredible, and the best I've ever had.
What sets Pelan Pelan apart are Emma and Putu. Putu is native to Bali and Emma is from the Netherlands. Together they have created something that is so unique and authentically welcoming - while also catering (just enough) to western sensibilities. "Pelan Pelan" in Balinese means "slow slow", for me that translates to "chill chill" as this is a fantastic place to relax and truly enjoy some of the best things Bali has to offer. While there I was made to feel like part of their family. I hope to again return soon and spend more time with them here.

I can't say enough positive things about Pelan. As a first time surfer, the one on one instruction I received each day (thank you Alit!) was amazing and had me out with the intermediate surfers by the end of my week. The hospitality that the entire staff provided made everyone feel like part of the family, a tribute to the amazing familial culture that owners Putu and Emma have created here. Delicious, local Indonesian meals at lunch brought the entire group together post-surf, followed each day by a relaxing afternoon (or second surf for those who were up for it). Yoga each afternoon in their beautiful yoga lodge was a treat, with classes that can be customized to the group's preferences (vinyasa, yin, etc.). Pelan offers a shuttle into central Canggu (~15min from the resort) each evening which made going out for dinner / nighttime excursions very easy.
I stayed in one of the suites nearest the pool which was lovely and very spacious. If I could do it again (which I might!), I would book one of the suites by the river as they're a bit more secluded and serene.
The ownership and staff really put a lot of care into this place and it shows every day. Traveling solo across the world never felt so welcoming, and it was hard to leave when my time at Pelan was up (I ended up extending my trip by an extra couple of days).
I think the attention to detail, excellent surf instruction, beautiful accommodations, yoga and spa offerings, local cuisine, and great hospitality are what make Pelan a one of a kind retreat that attracts incredible people from all around the world. Can't recommend this place enough!
