Echoland is a stylish 17-room B&B designed to provide balance between the modern demands for clean comfortable living with all the expected amenities, whilst still capturing the rich ethnic flavor of the immediate Balinese surroundings. The hotel is situated in the Canggu district, 250 meter from the surfers Echo Beach. This area is perfect for visitors in search of both the culture of Balinese life and the natural beauty of the island landscape. We are bordered by paddy fields that are overlooked by towering volcanoes and within earshot of the powerful waves of the Indian Ocean. Echo Beach maintains its traditional village character, but with its increasing popularity, a cluster of restaurants and shops can be found nestling on the sea front. These provide quality cuisine together with live music and are the ideal place to relax, watch the surfing and take in the natural atmosphere and shear beauty of this unique shore line. We stayed in a private room with an ensuite, the room was very nice as well as the pool. Breakfast was included, which was served on the rooftop and many things were included such as fresh fruit, tea or coffee and a full meal. The staff were very nice and helpful. Good location, near the beach and many restaurants.

Glad i got it right - the accommodation was booked last minute, without reading the reviews.

The rooms are simple and basic, and it’s all situated conveniently near the beach and main city centre. The breakfast is served on the rooftop, which is a lovely getaway. If there are any cons, just ensure to take your toiletries as a towel is the only things provided.

Everything was fantastic. Breakfast was great especially the banana pancakes, pool was beautiful only complaint we had no sunbeds around the pool but wasn't a big deal. Staff super friendly, room very clean.

Don't book here - this place was NOT worth the price. I've stayed at much better Airbnbs close by for more than HALF the price of this one.

1) The pool is in the centre, in front of all the rooms. I had multiple issues with inconsiderate guests swimming drunkenly at 4am or doing laps at 7am and waking everyone up.
2) There was no water machine available for guests. Staff would refill some jugs in the kitchen fridge but if they were empty, you're out of luck. I wanted water late one night as I wasn't feeling well, and a rude staff member told me I could pay for a water bottle. For the price guests are paying for this space, that's unacceptable.
3) There was construction around the entire perimeter of this Airbnb so the noise was CONSTANT. You couldn't enjoy the rooftop space or take a quiet shower since the bathrooms are outside.
4) Rooms are very small + gaps in the door where mosquitos could easily come in.
5) Included breakfast wasn't worth it. Not great and coffee was terrible.

Echoland is one of the good places we’ve stayed in here in Bali.
We love how the staff are very welcoming.
Beach is few minutes walk and ao are the famous Old Mans and newly opened Motel Mexicola in Canggu, but far enough from the noise of the party.

When you get out of the streets, few restaurants are nearby and also convenience stores.

We love everything about this hotel.

Excellent place to stay, has a great location only a short walk or scooter ride to the surf beach and restaurants/cafes. Staff are super friendly and very welcoming, rooms are great clean with excellent air conditioning with a tasty breakfast included on the spacious rooftop common area!

Special shout out to Nesa & Aniri for being excellent hosts. Terima Kasih!

The rooms looks nice and clean, but what I didn't like about Echoland are the windows in the room. It doesn't give you privacy because the curtain is not good. The rooms windows are on the corridors of the hotel, which people can see you.
Not very happy with the place.

Overall I would definitely recommend Echoland B&B - it's not the cheapest and it's not the most luxurious, so it strikes a nice balance, but do your research of course. When we arrived I must admit we were a little disappointed as the pictures on the website seemed a bit misleading - they're most likely the architect's proposed images, as doors and items weren't in the same positions in the Deluxe room. In addition, on the website, it looks like the B&B is nestled in a sea of rice paddies… but it's now nestled in amongst other villas! Yes, there's a rice paddy on one side, but that's also the view of a local's home! That said, it's a minor point overall and certainly the warmth of the staff overcomes any qualms. I'll add a few extra tips for the Echo Beach / Canggu area in this review, because that's usually part of my selection criteria. For us Echo Beach was in a good location, close enough to walk to the beach, and lots of other places to explore nearby (within scooter's reach).

ROOMS
The Standard Rooms can be a bit small and a bit dark, especially if you have lots of gear. Echoland has board racks on both levels, so you don't need to keep them in your room. Room 207 in particular was quite dark, as its window to the deck faced into the wall opposite. But the Standard room also features a bench seat and a wardrobe alcove with a bar to hang items. The Deluxe room (209) is muuuuch larger and airier which is lovely, but then you don't have any block-out curtains so we were waking up at 6am every morning and not being able to get back to sleep, and the fan/aircon combo is working hard. This room oddly doesn't have any hanging alcove, but does have two hooks on the wall with coat hangers! A little odd too is the wooden shutters at the pool end of the room - with only a light curtain to cover them. Whilst the shutters close to block out light, they certainly don't block out mosquitos, so ensure you spray yourself with repellent each evening - there is no mosquito net, so plan accordingly. The shutters may have inadvertently let in extra noise that other rooms on that level might not get. Reading the other reviews I would agree that rooms on ground level, near reception, will cop the most noise. There is no mini-fridge in the room, and there are no tea/coffee facilities either, both of which I found surprising. I like the ol' outdoor covered bathroom idea too - rustic and just fine. The rooms are cleaned each day. We found very little road noise due to the set-back position of the villa, with other villas blocking the inevitable scooter and construction sounds.

BREAKFAST & DRINKS
Breakfast is included and served from 7.30 to 10.00(ish) each morning. You had a choice of fruit juice / fruit platter / fruit with yoghurt - tea or coffee or Balinese coffee - and either toast & jam plus cooked eggs (scrambled, fried, poached?) versus banana pancakes versus Indonesian breakfast (mie goreng or nasi goreng). The trick with the latter is that it's not available until later in the breakfast session, but only in a limited amount (!) so not everyone can get it even if you ask from 8.30am! Quality could be a bit hit 'n' miss, from average to reasonable. I certainly expected the Indonesian options to be much more spiced up and flavoursome.

Echoland has a small fridge downstairs where you can buy water bottles (large and small), Bintangs (small) and a few types of sodas etc - the water at least was cheaper than the little man up the alley way.

STAFF, WIFI, POOL etc
All of the STAFF were warm and friendly - some spoke better English than others of course, and all were very helpful and cheery.

Upon arrival you're given the WIFI password - internet can be a bit slow and a bit sporadic, but fine for whatever we needed to look up.

The POOL was only used by each of us once - it was just way too cold to be comfortable. Due to the design of the villa, it's very shaded for the majority of the day, and it wasn't supremely hot weather. For our previous Bali stay, elsewhere, we used the pool two to three times a day, but that wasn't going to happen here which was a shame. The family with kids did use the pool every day though, testament to the unusability of the ocean/beach for swimming (at this time of year at least).

The upstairs DECK is where you have breakfast every morning, with a long table, a relaxing lounge area with two day-beds, and a gazebo with seating as well. There's a space there for the eventual yoga classes that are being planned. From there you get a small view of the water, off to the left in the distance, as well as all the other buildings and paddies that circled Echoland - even a couple of resident cows next door! It's a nice 'n' breezy spot up there - I couldn't get the wifi up there though.

HIRE SERVICES
You can hire SCOOTERS for IDR50,000 a day (~AU$5), with or without board racks, through reception and you must pay in cash (i.e. not as part of the hotel's charges). We had no problems whatsoever with our vehicles, but some have better 'get up and go' than others. Do the right thing and get your International Drivers Licence and wear your helmet provided - we did end up going through a police roadside check near Denpasar, so it does happen and you will get fined. There's a lot of wiggly-piggly roads and dead ends which provided a lot of fun to learn, finding our way to the main roads etc.

We also hired a MINIVAN & DRIVER for the day, who also worked for Echoland - it was IDR600,000 (~AU$60) for the day and you could seat up to seven people. His English is not great though, but if you know where you want to go and just get there then he's fine (and they may have other drivers available). If you want a proper tour guide with commentary etc, I would suggest hiring through somewhere else.

An interesting point is with TAXI hire - I'd read to only use Blue Bird taxis but reception told us they would not come and pick up from Echo Beach. I'd found that odd as I'd already seen Blue Bird taxis dropping people off. But, as the staff member said he would order us up a cab, I figured let's try it. Well, he picked us up and despite us saying we wanted to go into Seminyak (and not yet being familiar with this end of town, having stayed down in the Bukit last time and not going further up than Denpasar/Kuta), he dropped us before Kerobokan area!! The Echoland staff member said it would cost between 70k and 120k initially, so we agreed on 80k with the driver before setting off at mid-morning. So, he got IDR80,000 and we got an hour's extra walk!! For our return trip I hailed a Blue Bird taxi and talked to the driver. Yes they will pick up and drop off to Echo Beach, but it will take them ~20 mins to come and get you and you must order directly with them. We got the BB taxi back to Echoland from well within the Seminyak area, at peak hour traffic, and it only cost us IDR63,000 so lesson learnt!

I would definitely recommend using the AIRPORT PICKUP service offered by Echoland - there's a definite 'shortcut' to get through to Canggu / Echo Beach that some some drivers will know, some will not, but all locals will (we called it 'The Yellow Brick Road' with the rice paddies either side).

SURF & BEACH
Despite the number of guests who seemed to think the surf was pretty good here, our team of surfers thought Echo Beach and surrounding breaks were absolute crap. The conditions were messy with no defined breaks, lots of white water etc. Experienced surfers (or those who like bigger waves) will be disappointed. It was quite windy on one or two days, but otherwise good weather. On the windiest day there were no swimming signs further up the beach, but it really didn't seem like much of a swimming beach anyway. Our guys headed off to the Bukit (Bingin / Uluwatu) and had brilliant waves, but that's a real trek from Echo Beach.

This is a volcanic black-sand beach, so it's not great for those who like to lie around, because it's a bit of a sticky sand too, so you end up looking quite dirty etc. While we were there you certainly wouldn't want to snorkel off the beach, and I wouldn't let small children anywhere near the water either. You can go for some long walks along the beaches either side, but watch the right hand side, with its rivers meeting the ocean - they could be a little treacherous at the wrong tide time.

CAFES & SHOPS in the area
There's a Mandiri ATM just up the road, a few minutes walk. Be aware, if you have a CommBank Visa card it may not work at foreign ATMs even though they say they can. Maybe it was just my card, but I tested it in a number of ATMs in a number of areas with the same result. There's two CORNER STORES within easy walking distance towards the beach and you will be able to get your hands on most things. There's about five or six CAFEs and the like down at the beach strip, more here and there heading away from Echoland in various directions. There's also a few brand name mini-stores (Hurley, Quicksilver, Havianas) but there prices are a bit ridiculous (same prices as home). There's a (surfboard) shaper there too with some seriously impressive boards, an upmarket leather store (yummy belts, wrist bands, iPad covers, jewellery etc), another clothing store, as well as the "learn to surf" shop. There's a couple of "mini market" stalls just up from the beach, so it's nice to help them out too.

MASSAGES
In other areas you might find warungs offering IDR6000 beach massages, but here there are basically three local suppliers. (1) Ecospa (part of Ecosfera Hotel which you can Google. It's on the way to the beach, on the right. My partner had a massage there, 1.25 hours for ~AU$30. Rating 3/5. (2) Edelweiss Spa which is one row of shops back from the beach. Cheap 'n' cheerful! This is where you go to get a good massage at a cheap price but with no frills in terms of ambience, luxury or serenity. But the staff are sweet and you can afford to get hours of stuff done for very little dish e.g. one hour massage + half hour facial was ~AU$11. Standard one hour massage is ~$6.50. (3) Therapy is the distinctly different, more upmarket, making more of an effort to be a cut above, closer to what you would find at home. Excellent English and a real attempt to create a calm setting. You can't help the construction noise going on next door, and hopefully you're drifting off to la-la-land you don't notice it so much. Lots of package deals and options - see their reviews on Trip Advisor. Standard one hour massage ~AU$25, 1.5hr ~AU$35. We treated ourselves to Therapy, but spent more time at Edelweiss.

EXTRA NOTE
If you think these motel-style rooms won't be selected by couples with young kids, and that they would choose villas, think again! So if you're not kid-friendly, just be aware it may not be all young surfers and couples staying here. We had a family with two young kids who persisted in yelling "muuuum" several times from different floors, and running back and forth over the timber deck and stairs. I can only hope that the late night drinkers and talkers kept their kids away at night! *wink*

I booked for three days and I prolonged my stay. I recommend it to anyone. The staff is incredible and exceptional, anything you need they help you. The hostel is lovely, clean and tidy with a terrace on the top that is a delight, besides the pool. Located right on the Echo beach and minutes from Batubolong. With many restaurants nearby. the breakfasts were delicious. the people who work there definitely are the best .

I have stayed at many Bali hotels and this one is exceptionally overpriced for the size and services provided. I would not recommend it to anyone. I'm not sure why so many people give it a good review.

- The website overstates the "Luxury" quality that is more like hostel quality room size and service. Photo's work magic on their website.
- Door handle of the washroom fell off the first time opening the door. The Bule (Western Foreigner) manager just pushes it back on and says good luck. Does that sounds like $90/night value. I think they are making killing off that dump.
- Overpriced at $90/night for hostel like quality. It should be more like $20/night. You can get rooms twice the size in Ubud for $25/night.
- Staff were not friendly and poor knowledge of the area.
- Breakfast was poor with terrible service. Roof top dinning area floods in the rain and is partially covered so you get soaked getting to the covered area, and it's guaranteed to rain in Indonesia!
- Incredibly small rooms with no windows or windows facing a cement wall. Don't get fooled by the photo that outside view is the bedroom door.
- No where to relax with only 2 deck chairs around the pool, which were in a flooded grassy/muddy area. So unless you want to hand out in your dark windowless room, there is no where to relax.
- Did not provide shampoo in their so called "Luxury" hotel.
- When it rains everything in the bathroom gets soaked (Towels, TP). Poor design.
- Room service did not clean the dead bugs from the bathroom
- The shower head is a PVC pipe sticking out of a cement wall covered with bamboo. If I wanted to shower from a whole in the wall I wouldn't pay $90/night for it.

Overall, do not stay here, it's a sham.

Thanks for a terrible weekend Echoland!

It might not be the best place for a solo traveler. There aren't that many dorms, so most everybody is there with people they know, and the common area on the roof is mostly just for breakfast. But if you want a few days of quiet it's the closest thing you'll get to it in Bali.
