Gran Hotel Costa Rica a Curio Collection by Hilton hotel, is an iconic gem in the heart of San Jose. Located on the Second Avenue and the walking boulevard Avenida Central on his backyard. Our hotel overlooks the National Theatre and is only a few steps from cafés, shops, museums and other tourist attractions. It was built in 1930 and in December 2004 was declared historical-architectural monument of Costa Rica, considering this building reflects an urban testimony of San Jose in the first half of the twentieth century. Downtown San Jose, lacks of an upscale hotel, so Gran Hotel Costa Rica, will be a very good option for leisure travelers planning to discover the city center and also a must stay for artists within cultural show productions. This hotel is a city icon and it will be the place to stay for tourist looking for the best. Colonial beauty meets modern technology in our stylish 79 guest rooms.

If I could give six stars on the Tripadvisor scale, I certainly would.

We stayed here for three nights in early December 2018 (two adults and two teenage girls). We took a taxi from the airport which cost 17,800 colons (a little under US$30).

The hotel is well located right in the middle of San Jose and about a 10-minute walk from the National Museum (well worth a visit). There are hundreds of shops and restaurants around, but we experienced absolutely no noise in our room.

The hotel has been recently renovated. The entrance way at ground level is quite small and a bit dark but then you take the lift up to level 5 and you're in a whole new world. Level 5 is a huge reception/restaurant/bar area with a great view of the city. You could sit there all day enjoying the view as you eat and drink.

When we arrived at the hotel we were shown to the standard room that we had booked. As we were suffering from jet lag we immediately slept for a couple of hours and then went up to level 5 to look around. There Berny (front desk supervisor) asked if we would like a free upgrade to the Presidential Suite at no extra cost. We were amazed - thank you, Berny!

The Presidential Suite is large - a living area, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The Presidential Suite was wonderful. We had a platter of fruit waiting for us and all the usual things that you would expect, eg safety deposit box, big-screen TV, bathroom items etc. The TV had mostly channels in Spanish and English but there were also channels in Italian, Portuguese, French, Chinese, German.

The breakfast had a good selection and you could order hotcakes, eggs etc. A big thank-you to Adam here who always greeted us and asked if everything was ok. Remember - breakfast in the restaurant on level 5 is a great experience with a view of the city.

When we booked our room, I chose the Superior Service option which at the time cost only a few dollars extra per night. That was certainly well worth it as it meant that every night at 5-8pm we could go to the restaurant/bar on level 5 and order as much as we could drink for free! They also provided complementary hors d'oeuvres. As we tended to have big lunches, that was more or less all that we needed to eat in the evening, although we did order some items from the restaurant menu.

There is a tour desk on level 5 and we booked a couple of tours from there.

When we left, the hotel ordered for us a van that cost US$37 to the airport. This was the best option as we had four medium-sized suitcases and all the taxis that we saw pass by had small boots (or trunks as they say in the US). The traffic in San Jose is pretty bad, so bear this in mind when planning your travel time to/from the airport.

What makes this such a wonderful hotel?
- It has been renovated very tastefully and gives a sense of elegance.
- It is right in the middle of town.
- Level 5 is a great place to hang out to eat, drink, read, or just enjoy the view.
- The staff members were wonderful and polite, and I would like to acknowledge in particular Berny at the front desk, Adam in the bar/restaurant, and Mario Taylor and Hernan.

We will definitely stay here if we return to Costa Rica and we will recommended it to our friends. If booking this hotel, remember to choose the Superior Service option as that is definitely worth the extra money.

Thank you to everyone at the Gran Hotel. We had such a wonderful stay and leave with great memories!

This is an excellent hotel. I definitely would stay here again if I return to this area. The valets/bell men are especially helpful, and the breakfast buffet is fabulous. Room was clean and comfortable.

We knew from reviews this property would be a good match for our plans. Upon arrival we found George at this property , which is like icing on the cake. He is a great guy, Butler, personal assistant, and now a great friend . If you are headed to San Jose, go to this property, and find George. You will be glad you did!

This newly renovated hotel was beautiful. I arrived in San Jose for one night before flying to Peninsula de Osa. At check-in they were very helpful and kind as well as patient while I practiced my Spanish. The hotel is across from the Teatro Nacional which was convenient for a show that evening. The location is wonderful and made it easy to explore the city in a short amount of time. There is a nice bar and restaurant with an amazing view of the city at night. Also the food was really good. There’s a full bar with everything you could want. Staff was very friendly and accommodating when I asked to switch my room to a room facing the square.

One thing to note if you are trying to get to the international or domestic airport at a certain time you will want to think about traffic. It took me an hour each way. Also my cab ride from the airport was close to $40. The next day I decided to try Uber to the airport, and it only cost $10.
