the staff where a bit standoffish at first but became more friendly the longer we were there. Very cut off with very little around and not easy to find on the dirt country roads.Meals served in a canteen style and the open dinning room got attacked by a plague of large black beatles in the evening, but the toads loved...

Reading all the positive reviews we were looking forward to that stay. However, we were very disappointed. In short: 1) We were the only guests 2) There was basically no activity offered, it seems like boats, horses etc. were put away until more people arrive 3) Service at the restaurant was very poor, not even being asked what we would...

Ensenada is a working ranch. Meals are served family style in a covered outdoor dining room, accompanied by several large jays, so watch your plate! Food was very good. Rooms are basic cabins made of lovely wood. No AC, but lots of fans. There are trails for walking and a nice pool. You can easily walk down to the gulf...

The rooms, as noted, are basic but comfortable. Great pool, which was needed on a hot day. Very good food, served family style. The wifi is located at the restaurant and there are very comfortable seating there. We were interested in the birding and may have been a little late in the season. Some very nice trails to follow but...

This incredible spot is like heaven. I stayed two nights at the end of a 10 day vacation. They were lovely and serene, surrounded by nature and quiet. The food (family still) was delicious and a great deal of the funds. The family running the place is friendly and helpful. The cabins are rustic but very comfortable (my best shower...

This place is a birdwatchers paradise. An excellent lodge for wildlife. The rooms are basic but very comfortable and perfectly situated to hear and see the birds at dawn. The food is also amazing and gives you a real taster of local Costa Rican cuisine. The sunset daily is out of this world, I will post a picture

I really liked staying here (just two nights sadly). It's a great location on the Pacific shore and has a very relaxing and homely atmosphere. Early in the morning the long wooden jetty is teaming with terns, waders and herons and there are brown pelicans drifting by of-shore - a great way to start the day. The rooms are wooden...

La Ensenada Lodge, Manzanillo, 9th March 2015; length of stay, 2 nights Lodge and log cabin guest accommodation set around a low ridge beside the Gulf of Nicoya. A working cattle ranch (definitely Spanish-speaking; well signposted from highway) with walking/driving trails leading from the centre, swimming pool water as warm as a bath. Cabins simply furnished (no air-con just ceiling...

If you want lots of busy things to do, go on a cruise. If you're looking for a simply beautiful, serene place, look no further. A family run, working ranch, La Ensenada is located on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Nicoya and on a clear day you will see the most beautiful sunset ever. That said, there is plenty...

The cottages were OK and better than we expected in such a remote place. Dinner was included, to avoid driving too far. Quality of the food was average and served in a buffet. Choice was limited. It was recommended as a birding place, but that was not the case. It was more a horse riding camp. Most people come here...
