My friend and I stayed at BA for 2 nights in 'Sloth Room 1'. We'd heard bad things about Puerto Viejo and the surrounding area, so it was originally just a stop-over point on the way to Panama. BA turned out to be a gem and really surprised us! It's the *perfect* place to relax and use as a base... More

I stayed at Banana Azul with my boyfriend for a week last week. I booked this hotel after pouring through the reviews for this and the other hotels in this area and I had very high expectations. I am happy to report that the hotel and staff exceeded all that I had hoped for. We stayed in the Dolphin room,... More

Stayed here 6 nights with our daughter for her college spring break. Shared one room - one double, one twin ( not a roll away). The porch with hammock and table and chairs was a great place to read, photograph birds and look for sloths in the trees. The gardens are beautiful, the food was great, and the drinks were... More

Clean rooms - paper thin walls - unlimited hot water. Nice and mellow - beautiful grounds all the way to the beach! Boutique - right next to the ocean and hidden in the jungle. The best bartender in Costa Rica - great mojitos. Great Food My only complaint......BLACK SAND - looks like dirt.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and what a pleasure it was!! Everything was perfect. We stayed in the second floor, which did get noisy at times; however, it did not bother us as we were out in the town for all three nights. It was wonderful the sleep with the doors open and fall asleep to... More

Thanks very much for your positive review. I appreciate that despite you valid issue regarding chairs on the beach, that you did not let it ruin your stay. I know it would be awkward, but if you had mentioned it to us, we could of possibly made a couple available. But, I would probably react the same way not wanting... More

Other reviews have very accurate and well worded physical descriptions of Banana Azul so I will skip that in this review. For my wife and I, Banana Azul was exactly what we were looking for. It is an oasis of comfort, relaxation, warmth (the atmosphere) and welcoming in a 'yet to be developed' (from a tourism perspective) area of Costa... More

The Banana Azul (Blue Banana) is constructed of light and dark hardwoods throughout with a very inviting open lounge area. Situated between the main highway and the beach, the hotel is surrounded by heavy foliage of tropical plants, trees, and a Koi pond that borders and runs the length of the patio. The atmosphere is somewhat secluded and filled with... More

This hotel is very nicely done. The staff is friendly, yet professional and accommodating. The hotel grounds are beautiful and include a goldfish pond which surrounds the restaurant and bar area. They obviously have a very skilled landscaper on staff. The rooms are small but the balconies which have ocean views more than make up for it. Who wants to... More

While my boyfriend and I did not actually stay here, we were able to use all of the amenities provided. We stayed at Casas las Brisas(great private B&B), which has it worked out for their guests to be able to walk maybe 100ft to Banana Azul and use everything provided there. Everything from the staff, drinks(amazing), food, beach, and setting... More

We had a very brief stay at Banana Azul. The hotel was lovely, we had a room on the 1st floor of the main building. Lovely large balcony with hammock and table and chairs. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
