Stayed in Villa 4 for a week. The villa and it's garden were well designed and executed. The beach was excellent. The staff were young, fun and accommodating. The owner has put alot of thought and effort into this place. Rarely do you see a place where it all comes together. We will be back.

We both work in the travel business and are so pleased to be able to report so positively about a place we picked almost by chance. Banana Azul is blessed by ultra-friendly and professional staff (Ronald in particular) and is located on an almost deserted beach on the Caribbean coast in the south of Costa Rica. Great place to unwind.... More

Hey Jim. Thanks for the great review. I am glad you enjoyed yourself despite a few inconveniences. Sorry, we were not aware of the issue with the mattress in unit 5. We will do an inspection of all mattresses in the hotel. I hope you will visit us again sometime. Cheers, Colin More

This hotel is located just on the outskirts of Puerto Viejo on Playa Negra. The beach resort has beautifully maintained and landscaped grounds (saw monkeys, a sloth, and iguana on the property). The huts on the beach are possibly the only of their kind in the region and provides a hint of the feel for resorts in Mexico or alike... More

Stayed 6 nights in Villa 2 (Banana Verde across the street, off the beach) and everything was wonderful. Beds, food, bar, service....everything you want and need. Great base to explore the area from, and staff is friendly and knowledgable. They aim to please and we'll go back!

We stayed there for 2 nights and could stay more. The hotel is lovely, staff is very nice and we very much enjoyed it. We were given cocktails for celebrating our honeymoon which were very tasty! Breakfast was very accommodating with multiple choices to choose from. We stayed at the sloth cabina which is nice but a bit small, we... More

I only stayed for one night, but the staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was lovely with a balcony overlooking the garden and the sea. Evening meal was delicious and as I left quite early the next morning the staff prepared a takeaway breakfast for me. The garden is beautiful. Had a massage on my balcony which was very... More

Well run resort. Only 12 rooms so service is very personal and all the staff were great. Had dinner there a couple of times and the food was good. One night the special was steak, which was one of the best we've had in a long time.

Beautiful environment! The staff are extremely helpful and answered all my questions appropriately. They were of great assistance with helping me get transportation to my next destination. I was in a sloth cabina and it was clean and felt like home. The food was delicious - I enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. And, it was nice that bikes were available to... More

We scheduled this trip at the last minute and wanted a room with air conditioning. The Banana Azul was able to accommodate us but we had to switch rooms during our stay. I didn't mind and it was great to see the different rooms. The first two nights we stayed in the Villas. These units are just outside the main... More

Banana Azul was the perfect place for our honeymoon. It's beautiful, only steps from the beach and about a 10 minute bike ride from Puerto Viejo. The staff at the hotel is so helpful and friendly. We loved that the menu at the restaurant changed everyday. Make sure to try the patacones! Ronny the waiter was amazing the whole time... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
