From the moment you arrive you will be treated like family. The staff at Banana Azul made us feel like we were old friends. From Ronald, the food and beverage manager that orchestrated our wedding renewal on the beach to Jayr, who presided over the ceremony, to Ronnie who, even though he was expecting a new family member and had...

The hotel has a nice location, but rooms are poor, no air conditioning, no lift. But they add on every bill, they even charged for a night ten days ahead of our arrival. I stupidly did not check the credit card bill before signing and oh boy, what a sorry surprise when I did check!!!!

I cannot highly recommend Banana Azul/Villas Banana Verde high enough. My partner Skyler and I have now been there four times and each time keeps getting better. We are now fractional owners (two weeks per year) of the villas which provides the ultimate vacation experience. The villas are our home away from home with plenty of space, privacy, and amenities...

The staff, hotel, location and food were all excellent. For a couple of nights we were fortunate enough to stay in the Howler Suite with views of both the beach and garden from our spacious balcony (on occasion enjoyed with a gin & tonic in hand whilst resting in the hammock) - what a place! To add to the excitement...

Okay so staff were really friendly and attentive. We had to leave really early the next day so the night before they went ahead and notified the cooking staff to prepare breakfast for us to go. How sweet is that?! I was charmed by their awesome customer service. The room we stayed in was nice and fresh. The view is...

We chose this hotel for the amazing reviews and this was the first time Tripadvisor has failed us miserably. There were a couple nice things about this hotel, but too many other things that made our stay uncomfortable and annoying -- we wouldn't want to return EVER. The nice part: There is a semi-private beach with a few chairs and...

Hola Barbora, I am sorry to read that we failed on so many levels with your stay. I have since done an investigation into your claims and yes, it is clear we failed on some levels. Normally when I read a review like this that it seems no matter what we could have done, a customer would not be happy,...

We just came back from staying 3 nights in the sloth cabina. The room itself was alright, pretty small, a ceiling fan (we didn't need more than a ceiling fan), and a nice little balcony with a hammock. Thank god there weren't many mosquitoes! The shower itself had good hot water but the shower kept turning off from the shower...

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. First, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience you were caused by maintenance issues or service. We will take your feedback and work to make improvements. Overall, I think our property was not a good fit for you, and that's ok. Things like bird calls in the...

My wife and I stayed at the Banana Azul earlier this March. We rented one of their new Villa and it was awesome. Complete privacy in a jungle setting 100 yards from the beach. The staff was great and the food and drinks were very good. We will be back!

I stayed at Banana Azul when it first opened, about a decade ago. Though it was still new, and still awaiting some finishing touches, I remember being very impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm of the owners and small staff. Jump ahead ten years, to January of this year: I planned to come back to Puerto Viejo, and after researching...

My husband and I just got back from our 3 night stay at Hotel Banana Azul, and we absolutely loved it! The room, the food, the drinks, the staff...everything was great! We stayed in Breeze 1, and the upstairs patio with the hammocks was our favorite spot at night. Listening to all the bugs, birds, bats, and crashing waves was...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
