Hotel goes by the name of Junius Boutique Hotel. Charges like a boutique but in reality is one of the remnants of the old Party hotels. To be fair, the room was larger than what you find in Shanghai area. a. The barely speak English b. They do not have any western breakfast c. No working office equipment. I knew... More

I stayed there for five nights during a conference in a nearby university. The rooms are a bit small, but good enough for a single person who is busy in the daytime and only come back to the hotel to sleep at night. The price is very reasonable, and the staff are helpful; their English is a bit limited though.... More

The maintenance budget of the hotel could need an increase. The flooring in the room was in a poor shape and the walls could need another layer of paint. However the bed was surprising comfortable, albeit a bit hard, and I slept very well. The shower is one of the annoying ones that have been designed for people of medium... More

An unpretentious business hotel with few frills, but a very reasonable price for Shanghai. I would stay here again. My humble room (522) was clean and comfortable with a standup shower - no bathtub. Bed was stiff with hardwood floors which is typical for a Chinese business hotel. Adequate Chinese internet connection but no wireless internet. Walking distance (10 minutes)... More

A really good place to stay. Calm and silent. You can relax from city noise streets. Strongly advice for couples. You'll like it. Metro station isn't far from the hotel. Excellent location.

So much better than the elderly Holiday Inn I stayed at 6 years ago. Xinhua location, suite CNY488 per night Location: great - short stroll to subway, subway incredibly easy to use and fully bilingual. Excellent restaurant nearby at level 2 of the Crowne Plaza Hotel building. Facilities: tiny basic gym (2 pieces of equipment), couple of internet PC's in... More

We checked out this hotel based in its positive feedback. But I am afraid that the staff can't live up to the standards. They sometimes just don't seem to understand your wishes or complaints. For instance: we had our luggage stored away for a few days in the countryside. But they couldn't get it out of the storage, because "the... More

First impression of the hotel was all right, but upon inspection it looks tired and worn everywhere, including the hotel band. We were on business and we had club level rooms booked. The rooms were ok, nothing to brag about and especially not the club-level I expected, quite small, worn out and the view was terrible. The club lounge was... More

I booked this hotel based on the positive reviews here but found it quite disappointing. The walls in my room were badly cracked 2 cracks several metres long ran across the wall and there was large cracks on the ceiling in the bathroom. The bath plug would seal so could not have a bath and the bath rim was lower... More

As described in other posts, the Hotel Carolina is clean, quiet and friendly. I stayed at the Xin Hua location for 5 nights, so, this post is regarding that location only. The Xin Hua Lu location is convenient, about a 5 minute walk to the Yan' An West (Xi) Rd subway station, about a 5 minute walk (in the other... More

Staying in Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang

Neighbourhood Profile
Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang
West of Shanghai’s better-known business, cultural and entertainment centers, lies an expansive area of residential neighborhoods peppered with lifestyle pockets that have their own unique attractions. The schools have formed pockets of international communities throughout Gubei, Hongqiao and Minhang. Quite a few entertainment and shopping centers have built up over the years to cater to these communities. While living here means you are relatively far away from Shanghai’s usual hot spots, the large parks, spacious homes and proximity to great Japanese and Korean food keep the neighborhoods popular.
