At some stage the Mansion Hotel has to decide whether it's a 5 star INTERNATIONAL hotel or a Chinese hotel catering to some foreigners! We've stayed here several times now and while the history of the place (it's the former home of Shanghai's most infamous gangster Du Yuesheng) is wonderful, right in the heart of the former French concession, ultimately... Fabulous boutique hotel not too far from the Bund. Service was stellar. Room was GORGEOUS and immaculate. Even the bathroom was amazing. The only bothersome issue was the view from the bathroom window - overlooking the yards all the poorest of people in their shanty tin homes.

The perfect location if you want to spend your time in Shanghai walking around the Former French Concession. With just about everything you need in walking distance including great restaurants and boutique shopping its the best. I love the oversized rooms and historic elements of China. Breakfast in the garden is also included. The service and wifi for foreigners are... More

It's a terrific old mansion to visit but check out the vibes of the place especially the narrow corridors at night. Really spooky. The lifts are really classic and there are old photos lining the wall. The restaurant is interesting for French cuisine. The location is not great as it is away from most attractions. But to each his own.

You would stay here because of its great location and affordability. I go several times a year to Shanghai and have a contract price of less than 700RMB. This is volume based though. The staff are very good and friendly. Location is just terrific , near subway and on a great street.

It's an interesting getaway weekend for people who wants more than the normal 5 stars hotel with iPod next to your bed, or the nespresso machine. We were on a time machine to the 18 century Shanghai era. This 30 rooms hotel is converted from a historical famous mansion. The door, the hardwood floor, the shaky staircase all resemble its... I stumbled upon this hotel when I was wandering around the French Concession looking for a place to stay after a day trip turned into an overnight one. It's like staying in an opulent museum or being transported back in time and I absolutely loved it. Shanghai needs places like this to hold on to its historic color and charm.... More

Good experience , value for money. Definitely will revisit again. you will found some water mark on the wall of the guest room. Some people might be don't feel comfort with this, but I think this is perfectly match the atmosphere of this hotel.

Highest marks for location and for quality of the room. Location: the value of the location is illustrated by the fact that the Untour breakfast food tour starts and ends very near this hotel, and never strays more than 2 blocks away. Nice area to walk around - lots of places to eat in a neighborhood with tree-lined streets, much... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Designed by the French architect Lafayette in 1932 and located in the vibrant heart of the historic French Concession, this luxuriously restored heritage boutique hotel offers the city’s most authentic experience of ‘Old Shanghai’. Formerly headquarters of Shanghai vice boss Du Yuesheng, the Mansion Hotel was once the nerve centre of an opium empire and scene of some of roaring Shanghai’s most decadent parties. Hundreds of artifacts and photographs attest to its colourful past, as you relax into its lavish modern-day incarnation. ... more   less
