We booked two rooms here for a holiday (four of us) and the surroundings, location and decor were very good, as were the rooms. But... I cannot believe an earlier review that praised the level of English spoken by the staff. They could not understand anything at all - what a bill was, what we wanted to order for room...

This charming hotel is located very close to the subway, which was easy to use. The helpful staff spoke good English. The room was clean and comfortable with everything you could need. The windows opened which I consider a huge plus as I don't like air conditioning. The beds were very comfortable with three different types of pillows. A delicious...

It's located in the center of the old French Concession very close to Wulumuqi road and Changshu road, so it's in the middle of many good places to go to eat and drink, you won't have a problem locating the fun from there. The staff was nice and I didn't have a problem with their English as many others wrote....

It was exactly what I had hoped for in a stay with my girlfriend. The hotel is quaint, the grounds are beautiful, and the old French feel left me feeling as it we were immersed in an earlier and simpler time. It was a perfect romantic get away and a great place to be located for our further explorations in...

Room was large, clean and well equipt. Staff were enthusiastic and keen to please. Any lack of spoken english was overcome by use of translator apps on smart phones. Some might criticise its location as it is some distance from many of the downtown attractions but as we had transport provided it was not a problem for us. Only meals...

We had very little time in Shanghai and this hotels location didn't really help us! The hotel is a good standard and was clean with very comfortable, quiet rooms (quiet apart from the fountains dancing to music in the evening!). The most comprehensive TV service we had on our trip with channels for most countries. This was also the only...

Overall experience was acceptable, except that the shower curtain was dirty and smelly. Room was not properly cleaned. I stayed at non-smoking floor but there was a cigarette butt underneath the side table. Window was opened when I checked in, and it was not easy to close.

Great location in the French Concession, convenient (less than 1/2 mile) to the subway. Rooms are a good size for China! The breakfast buffet was good, focused on the Chinese clientele, but a few western options are available. We really enjoyed our stay. A combination of business and pleasure. After breakfast we walked to the subway, I connected out for...

This property is in a quiet area of the French Concession and it is the usual 4 star experience in China. A large and impressive entrance and foyer, good sized rooms with all the things they should have. Perhaps a little attention is needed to some small maintenance matters like the inside of our bathroom door. The English at reception...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
