I actually stayed at the Moller Villa Hotel around June 2015 when it was the rainy season in Shanghai, so there was an extra sense of romance on top of its aleady delicate atmosphere. People might worry that they'd be fooled by the promtional pictures of the hotel since they just could not look better. Castle-like architeture surrounded by the... More

Ok, this is one of my favorite places in China (hotel wise). It's very well located, I walked almost everywhere from the hotel. The room was pretty extravagant, specially as a solo traveler, so no complains. Every afternoon a staff member would stop by to hand treats. The bathroom toiletries were high quality and everything else was on point. The... More

Go to Möller's villa and enjoy your lovely afternoon tea with a great atmosphere, calm and peaceful green garden and the old architecture in the middle of Shanghai, 10 min walk from Kerry Centre. Or even stay at their hotel. A great miniature castle!👍😘💕

The Moller Villa is as quirky outside as the pictures make it look, but the hotel inside is a good standard hotel with all mod cons, thanks to sympathetic but thorough renovation. Mr Moller is thought to have built this Bavarian castle version of a doll's house for his daughter, and it is a unique building in Shanghai. It has... More

An unbelievable Fairyland castle and gardens built in the 1920's for a little rich girl by her father now a boutique hotel. Impeccably restored to its original glory. It seems so out of place in this very modern city an escape. It is a historically protected property.

If You like a special place to stay, and to impress this is it: An old huge villa built in 1930s by European has been transformed into a boutique hotel about 20 yrs ago. Old style but rooms are comfortable. Surrounding is nice, close to French district and old Shanghai with interesting places to eatand shop. Espensive but go when... More

This early 20th century mansion was said to have been built in the style of a fairy tale castle, and it certainly exudes a kind of magical charm. Our room was on the small side, but comfortable. Staff was helpful, and there was a good variety of Western and Chinese options at breakfast. My wife particularly enjoyed the bread pudding,... More

I am careful in the words I choose when reviewing a property here on Tripadvisor, and I stand behind the title of my review of the Moller Villa in Shanghai. It is presented online as a quaint old hotel, a throwback to Shanghai's roaring 20's past. That is misleading, because in reality the hotel is characterized by poor physical maintenance... More

The Hotel Moller was a pleasant surprise in downtown Shanghia. From the grand entrance at checking the scale of this villa is impresssive. The facility, while a little worn in places is a very comfortable and impressive place. The overall feel is much more relaxing and comfortable than one of the mighty chain towers from brands that we all know.... More

The hotel is like an oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of the big city! Our room was beautifully appointed. The buffet breakfast had a terrific selection of Asian and Continental foods. The front desk staff was the BEST! Very helpful and patient! I would recommend this hotel for business or pleasure! It was a great experience!

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
