We were generally happy with our choice of The Astor House and can recommend it. We chose it for its history and reputation, and we were in Shanghai to explore my British family history, so just being a short walk across the bridge to the Bund was very handy. The main shopping street and downtown and the metro station were...

This hotel is very close to the Bund and all the great sights of Shanghai. The walk on walk off bus stop is also very close. They have an exceptional breakfast in the Grand Ballroom, it is an amazing room.

Love the history, grandeur & the charm of this hotel. It transforms into a 30s Shanghai. The Peacock Hall where we had our breakfast was splendid. Breakfast spread was good too & they vary the food options during our 4-day stay there. Location-wise it is about 15min walk to Nanjing East Metro Station. 5 min walk to The Bund to...

This hotel is almost 200 years old and has loads of historic charm about it. Some rooms have awesome views of the Bund and the location is very central to both the Bund and downtown Shanghai. Had some initial issues with air conditioning. It is all centrally controlled and set around 25* C. Requests to fix temperature brought forth a...

A heritage hotel that has accommodated Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein and other celebrities as its customers in its heyday. Some parts are a little worn but the rooms are spacious and comfortable. It's conveniently- located and just a short walk across the bridge to the Bund. Don't bother with the breakfast.

In a country where most hotels, even the best ones, tend to be soulless glass and chrome, it's nice to have a place to stay with a little character. She's an old gal to be sure, perhaps not what she was in the old days and best if not photographed in too bright a light but the charm is there....

The Astor is ideally situated to see the sights along The Bund Waterfront in Shanghai. It is an old hotel with much history attached. Once inside though the historical aspects pale into insignificance when confronted with the dilapidated state of the place. Our bedroom was large but had only one bedside table and almost nothing by the way of drawers...

This hotel is at the north end of the Bund and is ideally situated to explore Shanghai. The hotel is itself a museum piece, very stylish, but is a little faded in the public areas. Our rooms were directly above the main entrance, and were well appointed and comfortable, and quiet, thankfully well glazed windows. If you want a hotel...

This place is definitely worth seeing. Felt a bit like I was staying in an Agatha Christie novel. Fascinating historical decor, not your standard corporate hotel for sure. Only stayed one night and largely out seeing Shanghai but the hotel seemed quiet, and the location is fantastic. To reiterate: Definitely worth seeing!

It is a beautiful and conveniently located hotel with great service. Yet my room was not very well maintained and had a musty old odor. Also, do not pay for the breakfast buffet, it was horrible. Opt for the breakfast served in the lobby cafe.

Staying in Hongkou

Neighbourhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
