I had 12 hours to spare during the day in between trains in Shanghai so checked into the nearest hotel from the central train station at a reasonable rate to leave my bags and get freshened up. There is a Hanting chain hotel next to the train station but as it was 299 RMB - all the cheap rooms had gone - the Siweimei was the next one I came across on the same street. I was charged 168 RMB for the stay and frankly, cheap as it is, I’m glad I didn’t have to sleep there overnight. Far and away the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in in China: the room was draughty, old and the shower had no hot water. It seemed clean enough but at night, it must be so cold in Room 217 that the duvet and blanket provided would not have been enough since the window didn’t shut properly in the middle of a Shanghai winter. One to avoid - even if it’s to rest for a few hours during the day.…
