As per room service, we had to go down the hotel restaurant to literally point out from the menu list the food we'd like to order. We took the hotel's buffet breakfast on our first morning in Shanghai but opted to have breakfast elsewhere for our next three days as there's nothing really special with their entrees.
The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, however, got disappointed that housekeeping to this hotel seems like just taking out the garbage, providing new set of towels and toiletries then fixing your room curtain for a superficial, tidy look. In the five days of stay, it felt like the linens were not changed and the floor were left uncleaned. Also, to our disappointment, my daughter's personal comfort pillow was missing after the second day of room cleaning. All our other valuables were intact but funny that that red, cuddly pillow was never found.
TV has no cable channel, only one English channel that replays in the morning what was shown night before. No wifi but has data cable for Internet.
Tips
When dining, Shanghainese foods are very oily, try to opt for something steamed or fresh. Also try to buy water/soda from convenience store, this is cheaper and may come in handy when only tea is served.
Must see places are the Bund and Huang Pu River (in day time and in night time), Nanjing S
Not Recommend
The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is a short yet quite expensive trip to cross the other side of the Huang Pu river. The lights and sounds show while inside the tunnel is not worth your money.
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum displays exceptional modern architecture. However, it should have been more interesting and educational if only all of the interactive machines/games are functional as many of them were either under maintainance or out order. Nevertheless, nearby A and P Plaza offers good bargains of phone and computer gadgets, Chinese clothing, bags, shoes and souvenirs.
Just ignore the touts who want to sell you stuff or take you to a tea ceremony (where you'll be ripped off!) and go to your hotel.
The Baron Bund hotel is set back from the road but easy to see if you are following the street numbers.
I arrived and presented my Agoda booking slip (very handy with the address written in Chinese). I was greeted at the desk and the gentleman seemed to have trouble finding my booking. The lady in charge came along, apologised for the delay, made a phone call and then everything was fine.
My room on the second floor whilst dark was large with a huge bathroom and bath to soak in after walking around town all day. A couple of English channels on the tele to listen to whilst catching up in the fast internet. The AC worked properly.
Bed was China hard but I am getting used to this and the pillows meant I slept well.
Whilst my staff contact was minimal they were unfailingly polite and pleased to see me even if they didn't speak English (nor do I speak Chinese).
Lots of small eating places nearby which are cheap.
Go to the riverside before sunset to see the sights and soak up the atmosphere. The crowds are huge so get a good spot early.
Take the Bund sightseeing tour under the river, just a short walk from the Baron Bund.
There is a lot to see and do very near here so enjoy The Baron Bund hotel for what it is, a tourist hotel that is clean and safe, and offers a good nights sleep.
When departing early in the morning the check out gentleman made sure my taxi driver knew to take me to MagLev train which I then caught to the airport.
I would happily return to this hotel.
We have called & pleaded with them over the phone but no luck. Our business train trip is immediately within the hour after checking into the hotel so there isn't any time left to go pick-up the tickets. We tried our very best to explain this to the customer service agent. But it didn't matter to them. Definitely disappointed with this hotel, EVEN before our arrival. What's a horrible experience.
With a "Business" in their "Baron Business Bund Hotel" name, you would think they try to accommodate their customers. We will make sure our company and all other business associates traveling to Shanghai aware of it and NEVER book with "Baron Business Bund Hotel" again!
The matress was hard like stone. The furniture in the room was very old and partly destroyed. Actually this hotel looks like a hour-hotel for sex workers.
Considering all circumstances we decide to leave the hotel and choose a much better one which is not a problem at all.
The staff is very unfriendly and unhelpful, and the rooms, hallways and all common areas are filthy. They keep the lights very low so that you cannot see how dirty it is. The staff does not vaccum the rooms or hall at all--- I was sitting in the hallway trying to get internet for hours. They move the vacuum cleaner behind them, but they never actually bring it into a room. The room cleaning takes less than 5 minutes per room. The walls are paper thin, and the patrons are exceptionally loud running through the hallways at all hours.
The internet does not work... no reception even though they put a booster in the room next to mine (where the internet also did not work). The conference room is unusable-- it has giant pillars in the middle, so you must have everyone sit on one side, and use one side of the room to project. If you have more than 14 people for a metting, it won't work.
The absolutely only thing going for this hotel was that it was near the Bund. Beds are really hard-- that does not bother me, but most of those I was travelling with did not like that.
No people in the reception on nighttime!
Very bad condition on the room, dirty and very simple and hard beds!
No mirror in the bathroom!
No shower draperi!
A wall just outside the window!
Wake-up call for our early return flight - Reception forgot to call!
Very poor room service!
VARNING! This is absolute not a 4 star hotel - In best case a 2 STAR!!!
