This unique, beautiful, old hotel (aka Shanghai Waitan Huayuan) is noted for its rich heritage architecture, of a European Gothic Revival style. It was constructed as a private residence in he 1928 to 1930 period. The hotel’s dining facilities serve Huaiyang cuisine, as well as Western dishes. Breakfast was delicious. There are six private dining rooms which can be used...

This hotel is an amazing piece of Shanghai history. It is right next to Holy Trinity Church - recently restored. It was known as the Red Cathedral in 'Empire of the Sun'. The hotel was the Bishops home and next to it is the old Boys School closed when the Japanese invaded. You are visiting a living piece of Shanghai...

When we arrived the receptionist could not find our booking. It was midnight and we were tired after the long journey from the UK. This was our first visit to Shanghai. The receptionist eventually found our booking after about half an hour. No apology was offered. He then showed us to our room up a flight of stairs and no...

First time I stayed here – some 8 years ago – I thought there was something really wrong before arriving, because the combination of pictures of the building, of the rooms, the location and the price didn’t make sense. But it wasn’t a lie. It was – and is – possible to stay in a quite exclusive villa hotel in...

Well located with comfortable rooms which are possibly in need of a bit of tlc. Great, sweetly helpful staff. Fantastic chinese breakfast. Really well located for the Bund and shopping streets. Good restaurants nearby.

My family and I did not stay at the hotel, but enjoyed a lovely 'last evening' meal at the Bund Garden Hotel Restaurant. The surroundings are superb - as host, I sat facing the striking stained-glass frontage of the building and enjoyed pointing out the enormous chandelier above our table to our children, but best of all was the wonderfully...

I stay just one night. Fantastic location. I had a Chinese speaker with me but the desk staff seemed to have passable English. The breakfast (western) wasn't to my taste but apart from that I enjoyed my stay. It was such a surprise to find this charming little hotel in central Shanghai. I would highly recommend it. (Word of warning,...

Great location, charming old building and comfortable rooms. Unfortunately that counts for very little when levels of customer service are so lacking as they are in this small 9 bedroom hotel. Maybe the manager or staff have changed since other more positive reviews were written, because we found the key hotel staff to be unwelcoming and unhelpful. Unwelcoming: We arrived...

In the teeming metropolis that is Shanghai it was refreshing to find a nine room hotel just 400m walk from The Bund and close to the bustle of Nanjing Road. This three level hotel was built in 1928 in Shanghai's heyday and has been refurbished with a restaurant and classic interiors which makes it feel like a warm and friendly...

This is a really special hotel in China. It is in an old, low rise building & only has 9 rooms. My room IX was on the top floor & quite charming - there were a few little points: no wardrobe, safe did not work, but the plusses - quiet, comfortable, good temperature, good space made it a winner. Check...

Staying in The Bund

Neighbourhood Profile
The Bund
While there are certainly many other “bunds” in the world, “the Bund” refers to Shanghai’s famous waterfront. The area’s Gothic, Art Deco and Beaux Arts monoliths were built when it was part of the Shanghai International Settlement run by the British and Americans. The atmosphere of colonial-era luxury has endured over time and is now found in the five-star hotels, luxury brand boutiques and expensive restaurants that can be found within the historic buildings. A cultural center has built up away from the water and some of Shanghai’s best art galleries and museums are housed close to the Bund. Nighttime views of Pudong and the rest of the city also make for a great backdrop at the many rooftop clubs.
