Toberua is a hidden gem. We just returned from spending 8 days on this island paradise in the low season (February/March) when it is a bit warmer and wetter. We were consistently blown away by the exceptional standards and hospitality of the entire staff, and would highly recommend this to travellers interested in a secluded island getaway. The manager was there to greet us on arrival, welcome drinks in hand. By the end of the first day everyone knew and greeted us by name. The premium Bure (No. 2) was positioned perfectly right on the beach, complete with hammock and loungers. We were initially worried about the lack of air conditioning but the nights were breezy and the ceiling fan kept us reasonably cool. Evening temperatures were about 24-25C. Being away from the mainland there are very few bugs and I never needed the bug spray I had packed. The food was excellent and a cut above most of my previous resort experiences in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Hawaii. The current chef, who I believe is new to the role at Toberua in the last few months, is a definite keeper. The menu changed every day with a good variety of meat, fish, and vegetarian options. The tuna poke and bacon wrapped fern dishes were standouts. Zac, the bartender was great.
The main purpose of the trip was for scuba diving and we chose Toberua in part because of the convenience of having its own dive outfit on site. We did 8 dives over 4 days and though this is not the best time of year to dive in Fiji from a visibility perspective, our dive master made a concerted effort to find the clearest dives for us with good success (see photos). Though Fiji may be better known for the soft coral in the North, I was very impressed by the hard coral formations and the density of fish. We also saw many turtles, white tip reef sharks, and rays. The water was very warm, about 29-30C.
We considered some of the other scheduled activities and did make a trip out to Bird Island to see the red footed boobies and the black and white sea snakes. Apparently they are quite venomous but docile and unable to bite humans. We considered chartering the fishing boat, but ended up deciding against it since we got a taste during the surface intervals between scuba dives. Our guide cast out a line and managed to catch both a Spanish Mackerel and a pretty remarkable 73lb Giant Trevally, which was subsequently incorporated into the dinner menu the following day.
Other quick notes: The island is fully solar powered. The water is safe to drink, and the internet (if you pay for the 5$ per day premium wifi) was more than fast enough to make WhatsApp calls home. I inquired about tipping and was advised to use the tip box in the main office, which seemed a nice way of doing it so that gratuities are split between all staff. There is a resident Parrot named Jack who had much to say and would occasionally come to the terrace to join us for breakfast.
10/10. Worth a return trip.

An island holiday in Fiji that more than met our expectations - that's how we can sum up our stay at the Toberua Island Resort. We spent four days there after our New Zealand holiday and it was the icing on the cake! If you're looking for a relaxing island holiday without any problems, such as a crumbling joint in the shower, then this is the place for you. That's all the negatives - yes, the resort is showing its age, but everything is clean and works. We stayed in Bure 1 (Tropical), right next to the bar and entertainment area. If you don't mind a few evening conversations or the "click" of a billiard ball, then this is a recommendation. The Bure is right on the sandy beach on the leeward side, other huts are on the opposite side with rocky shores and much more wind. But now for the best part - that's the people on Toberua! The resort is run very well by a New Zealand couple, and the welcome at the jetty was warm despite it being late in the evening. The employees anticipated your every wish and spread a zest for life that we have never experienced anywhere else. The highlight was celebrating Fiji's Independence Day with the staff. There are several activities on offer every day, some of which are included, so it never gets boring. The food is of the highest quality and the fishermen probably catch the freshest catch, and you can also enjoy live music, simply unforgettable. When we left, the whole team gave us a warm farewell with music at the jetty, it will certainly be an unforgettable experience. Finally, we should mention that we decided on Toberua because of its easy accessibility, and you can get picked up from Suva practically around the clock in a well-organized manner, which is hardly possible at other island resorts in Fiji.

Toberua is the perfect place to unwind, relax and slow down from the normal day to day. Our trip on the island was nice. We didn’t have the best weather so my review may have been slightly different if we got some sun and were able to enjoy the activities more. The staff are friendly and always greet you with a Bula and a smile. The rooms are a little outdated however, this does add a certain Fijian charm. Food was good, however you do need to select your meal options in the morning for the day ahead. Completely understand being a small island they need to ensure they have the produce to facilitate guest menu choices but sometimes what I chose in the morning wasn’t what I fancied come the evening.
We did have a lot of bugs in our room, but again, being an island, this is inevitable. They provide a plug to plug in to deter insects which we did use and this helped but still some creepy crawlies were in the room.
The spa was wonderful and so reasonably priced. The entertainment from the band was fabulous, they played music during cocktail hour at the bar and during lunch and dinner service. They are incredibly talented. The highlight of my whole trip was the village tour they put on, it is an absolute must if you stay here.
Overall the stay was nice and relaxing.

Bula Kayleigh We are sad you did not enjoy the normal warm sunshine at Toberua during your stay, but happy that you found some warmth in the staff, the village visit, the Toberua Serenaders and in the day spa. We are indeed a vintage property with charming traditional Fijian Bure interiors. So glad you got to slow-down and relax!

The trip was to celebrate as a family our 50th Wedding anniversary and the location, facility but most of all the extremely friendly family environment was Just perfect a 10/10. The staff could not do enough for you nothing was ever too much trouble. For the night of our 50th Anniversary dinner they pull out all the stops the table for nine persons was decorated with flowers and bunting and banner along with a 50 golden balloon. they even remembered one of our party had their birthday that day and also commentated that with a banner . Plus a just huge chocolate cake with candles and a sea food platter all for no extra charge or special arrangement on our part it was completely a most pleasant surprise to us all.
The island is just idealistic, the perfect small tropical island of only 5 acres I think with 15 Bures so it was very much a friendly family atmosphere not just from the staff but also the other guests 9 again I think max 35 people.
The kids had just a ball all playing together and making friends and spending so much time in the perfect size pool.
Christmas day was extra special as well with a visit from Santa Claus who must have made a special visit to the island shop because he gave my grandson a small ukulele that he was admiring on the shelf, Again all done without extra charge or input from us just perfect observation and attention to detail by the fabulous staff. Christmas dinner again was delicious as was all the food perfect 5 star quality.
One last thing to mention the live music every night except Sunday the harmonies and perfect range of songs and quality of singing from the musicians was again 1st rate.
The Island resort is some 50 years old so the buildings obviously reflect their age but the cleanliness and up keep was superb.
Just loved our time there as did all nine of the family!

From the moment we arrived, we exhaled!! Toberua was everything we needed to unwind, relax and escape our busy lives. The warmth and friendliness of the staff made us feel very welcome and we enjoyed socialising with other guests in the late afternoon over pool and pingpong. We loved the boutique scale of the resort, the tranquility and the privacy. We appreciated getting to know the staff and our son thoroughly enjoyed the volleyball games everyday at 5pm and how inclusive and accomodating the staff were. Toberua is the kind of place you can decide how much you tap in or out. The Villas are private and we had a lovely ocean aspect with a hammock and enjoyed the very comfortable beds. The day spa was well worth a visit and Ima is an incredible masseuse and warm soul. She gave me an amazing 90 min Fijian massage which I can't recommend more highly and did a professional job braiding our sons hair. Highlights for us were the BBQ night and village tour. We took a soccer ball and pump for the village children and our son played soccer with them which was a wonderful way to connect with the local community. The ocean breeze, sunshine and warmth all made for a beautiful holiday we won't forget. THANK YOU to the whole team who gave us a memorable and relaxing holiday. If you are looking for paradise - this is it!!!

30 minutes boat ride away from the mainland this resort is located on tiny 5 acres island. Only a few ‘bure’ (thatched cottages) that are well appointed and airy are available. I think that the resort can’t accommodate more than 20-25 guests at a time so all is very personal and exclusive. Always a fresh breeze and excellent views from any location. Small beach sections only but good for swimming nevertheless. Friendly staff and excellent food. Highly recommended to just chill and relax for a few days. Excellent spa.

A hidden gem and marvellous discovery. We stayed 2 nights in an oceanfront bure - very spacious and comfortable, even without air conditioning! The resort is the only thing in the island but there were organized activities, water sports and a spa if relaxing by the ocean wasn't enough to keep us busy. Management and staff were fantastic - very attentive and friendly. We had the half-board meals (2 per day) and there was enough choice to satisfy various diets. We really enjoyed the sustainable aspects of the resort including the solar power. Regular wifi was quite good but cell reception lacked a bit. Transfers to-from Suva were well organized. Would definitely come back!

Thanks to the warm, welcoming staff and the attentive caretakers, Toberua is more of an experience than a destination. The island itself is a stunning dot of green in the middle of clear blue water, and from the moment you step off the boat, you are embraced by the staff and taken into their world. They sing at night, share their home (if you go on the village visit which I highly recommend) and greet you by name each morning. Though you could easily spend a day reading and looking out at the water from your private veranda, there is plenty to do at Toberua. The dive staff is excellent (though I’d advise serious divers to bring their own fins as the dive shop has only snorkel fins) and for non-divers, there is snorkeling, and plenty of day trips and activities on the island. Definitely check out the spa - massages are heavenly. The food is varied and delicious, and the staff come around in the morning to take your order for lunch and dinner. The atmosphere is laid back, friendly, and communal. By the end of your stay, you’ll know the others on the island by name and maybe even make a few friends along the way. I simply cannot recommend this place more highly, and I hope that one day I have the chance to come back.

It was a beautiful experience. We went with several friends from Suva and family that travelled from abroad and the Toberua team was very accommodating and made sure we were comfortable during our stay. The place itself it's just beautiful and so relaxing. Waking up to the sound of the waves and views over the sea, the traditional high-ceiling bures (impressive) and the overall vibes on the island. Food was amazing and the team made sure to cover all preferences and allergies (there were 2 gluten-free people in our group). Saturday buffet was really good and fun! We'd love to come back soon! Vinaka vakalevu Toberua team!

As returnees we weren't sure if we could expect the magic of our previous Toberua experiences after the last two years of the pandemic. Toberua is still a place of relaxation that washes over you as soon as you step on the boat to transfer to the island. Once on the island, we were busy doing everything and nothing at the same time. The staff remain their best asset and there are many familiar faces and some new ones. The food experience is great - we took the meal plan, which again proved difficult to resist. New managers Wayne and Sabine are well engaged with the guests, checking in regularly to chat about your day. I was worried about the bats given previous reviews, but I could hardly say there were problematic. We were bothered by mozzies - nothing new to a Fijian resort, but our experiences of Toberua have all been mozzie free given the distance from the mainland. Be prepared with some repellant or buy some Pure Fiji lemongrass repellant from the shop. There are a few small changes to the Toberua experience. The daily snorkelling trip attracts a small charge and I don't remember the Toberua Serenaders singing at the lunch meal, which they did every day while we were there - it was lovely enjoying a meal by the beach enjoying traditional Fijian songs and many of our own requests. We joined in the daily activities like ladder golf, darts and pentaque with the staff on most days and had a barrel of laughs. We will definitely be back to our little island in the Pacific.

Bula LoveTravel816121, Thank you for your review and we are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay on Toberua Island Resort. We are glad that your visit was relaxing and that our staff was looking after you. During the wet season we do get a few mosquitos despite our best effort of fogging every week. This happens only a few months of the year as all other times we don't have many and the products we sell in the shop are not only effective but also have a lovely lemongrass smell. We look forward to having you back in the future to our island paradise and thanks again for your stay!

The Toberua management will arrange to collect you from the airport and take you to the landing station where a boat will be ready to take you to the island. You can then arrange for transfers back to explore Suva as and when you want. There will be a charge ... check with the hotel. We cannot rerecommend the island highly enough.
Bula, Toberua Island does not have an airstrip. You will need to catch a domestic flight from Nadi to Suva and then our transport provider can pick you up from the airport for a short 15mins drive to the landing. From there our speed boat will be waiting to take you in less than 30minutes to Toberua island. Please advise arrival times. Vinaka and we hope to welcoming you to our piece of paradise!
Hi Kajal,
There are no land snakes on the island. The only sea snake around Toberua Island Resort is the white banded krait, which is very common in all Fijian waters. They come ashore to shelter from bad weather and to digest their food. They are generally docile and do not attack people.
Any occasional sea snake seen on the island are removed by our staff.
We hope that this helps!
There are more places to choose from in the Toberua Island area.
