We stayed at this hotel on a whim as everywhere else on the street was booked. For us it is extremely overpriced and disappointing. The manager was very friendly in convincing us to stay and that is where the friendliness ended. From that point on the staff were indifferent and sometimes rude (apart from the night manager who was lovely).... More

This hotel would not appeal to all. It is a relic from times past, from the days of the Raj, but we chose it for that very reason. When we arrived one of our party was not feeling well, and as we had booked a three bedded room, we were informed it was on the second floor, so asked was... More

I had intended to stay here in 1992 with my wife when we started a nine month round the world trip in India. Unfortunately it was at a time when there were riots and we had to miss out on visits to Varanasi and Kolkata (Calcutta in those days). So when returning to India with my son I was keen... More

A delightful place to stay, full of history and character. The old building has been well maintained with quirky original furniture, and almost mahal-like interior decor. Excellent, helpful staff (just a pity that the dining room staff weren't as friendly as the others!). The 'garden' has developed into a popular bar for the young of Kolkata, but this didn't worry... I traveled to India for five years and I have never seen a place so bad. I had booked a long time for 3 nights and confirmed my arrival. I arrived at night and give me a room without a window, horribly dirty and especially with a epouvantable odor. It was unbreathable. I asked for another room. It was not... More

Hotel in good location, room was basic, however clean and air con worked. Could not fault. The hotel has an old world feel to it, stepping back in time. Bar was okay as well. Staff were good, Would go back :)

I stayed at fairlawn hotel in April 2015 and loved it so much I cancelled my reservation at the other 2 hotels I had booked and continued my stay at Fairlawn, it is close to everything, the staff were great my single room was comfortable and my rescue from the heat and crazy streets of Calcutta. The breakfast was nothing... More

Though this place still has some charm, I would say it is massively overpriced. The rooms are average at best and I stayed in places with better rooms at half the price. The staff were okay, one guy was very good, but the others were really not that good. The breakfasts were terrible.

I'd been wanting to stay at this hotel for around 15 years after wonderful reports on it from various television personalities giving it a glowing report. This was the worst hotel both in provision of service, food and atmosphere experienced on my tour across north India from Delhi to Calcutta. The hotel must have at one time, possibly during the... My wife, her twin-sister, and I were visiting Kolkata, their birth-place. Many recommendations had led us to book rooms at The Fairlawn, and whilst I harboured reservations as to how this was going to work out (having seen pictures and viewed the website), I was utterly charmed by the place, the staff, and particularly the Owners, John and Jenny Fowler...
