I stayed at the Fairlawn in the 1980s, when it was becoming known as a Calcutta (as it was then) institution. Presided over by the formidable (and now late) Mrs Violet Smith, it was known for its 'character' - it was also comparable to the run of tourist hotels in the city - excepting giants such as the Oberoi. I...

With campy British kitsch and a beautiful entrance via an open port cochère, this is a reasonably charming hotel that's welcoming and has reasonably friendly service. The English breakfast is great. My room, 07, was lavishly furnished, including a surprisingly decent library. The location was great, and I appreciated the significant discount for a single occupant. Two major downsides. The...

We stayed at this hotel on a whim as everywhere else on the street was booked. For us it is extremely overpriced and disappointing. The manager was very friendly in convincing us to stay and that is where the friendliness ended. From that point on the staff were indifferent and sometimes rude (apart from the night manager who was lovely)....

This hotel would not appeal to all. It is a relic from times past, from the days of the Raj, but we chose it for that very reason. When we arrived one of our party was not feeling well, and as we had booked a three bedded room, we were informed it was on the second floor, so asked was...

I had intended to stay here in 1992 with my wife when we started a nine month round the world trip in India. Unfortunately it was at a time when there were riots and we had to miss out on visits to Varanasi and Kolkata (Calcutta in those days). So when returning to India with my son I was keen...

A delightful place to stay, full of history and character. The old building has been well maintained with quirky original furniture, and almost mahal-like interior decor. Excellent, helpful staff (just a pity that the dining room staff weren't as friendly as the others!). The 'garden' has developed into a popular bar for the young of Kolkata, but this didn't worry...

I traveled to India for five years and I have never seen a place so bad. I had booked a long time for 3 nights and confirmed my arrival. I arrived at night and give me a room without a window, horribly dirty and especially with a epouvantable odor. It was unbreathable. I asked for another room. It was not...

Hotel in good location, room was basic, however clean and air con worked. Could not fault. The hotel has an old world feel to it, stepping back in time. Bar was okay as well. Staff were good, Would go back :)
