Nestled in the heart of Kolkata, The Elgin Fairlawn stands out for its vintage charm and heritage style, which travelers frequently commend. The spacious rooms and the hotel's cleanliness are consistently praised, although there are mentions of rooms and amenities that could benefit from refurbishment, including the showers. Service at the Fairlawn is highlighted as friendly and efficient, contributing to the hotel’s memorable experience. While the quality food and the hotel's ambiance are appreciated, some guests feel the pricing is a bit steep and the evening music rather loud.

This is a good hotel which makes the most of its history and celebrity links: photos and letters from a range of guests over the years decorate all the walls. The staff are courteous and helpful and the more expensive rooms are excellent value for their comfort and decor. The breakfast is great with a range of food well presented in the 'open' dining area, staff are courteous and helpful. The hotel does not serve alcohol. The balcony sitting area is good to relax and unwind and the courtyard serves a good afternoon tea. This is generally a stay that is in a central location and an experience with quirky touches reminiscent of a particular time in India’s past.

Dear Sir ! On behalf of the entire team from The Elgin Fairlawn, Kolkata (Calcutta), we thank you for feedback ! We are happy to know of your feedback and we would like you to know that we envision to positively breathe life back into our property and bring about the much needed positive transformation that a vibrant city such as Kolkata (Calcutta) deserves ! As you are aware ! The Elgin heritage hotel chain run by the Oberoi family of hoteliers has recently acquired the property and please be rest assured that as this iconic hotel is passed down from the Smith family to the Oberoi family all efforts will be made to restore and refurbish the property with all modern amenities yet keeping in mind the colonial ambience and aesthetics . The idea and aim is to strike the right balance between the yester years and the modern contemporary world, and so we envision to bring back this colonial beauty back to life as a boutique heritage hotel with all its history and glory. Housed in a 1783 building with a colonial-era vibe, this memorabilia-filled, family-run hotel is a minutes' walk from the Indian Museum and a 6-minute stroll from the nearest metro station. This was the last dinner that our Explore Worldwide group had in India and I don't think we could have gone to a better hotel. This is a fabulous place with all the memorabilia on the walls upstairs of the old movie stars that would have graced the dining tables 50 - 60 years ago. The hotel was here since 1783 and is now a heritage building which has retained it's colonial charm.

It is like walking through a museum upstairs furnished with beautiful colonial style couches, chairs, tables and lamps and paintings on the walls and photos of some famous guests from over the years including Partick Swayze, Felicity Kendall, Tom Stoppard, Julie Christie, Sting and Michael Palin.

The staff were very friendly and encouraged us to visit the upstairs to look at the splendour therein.

I had an excellent dinner although service was a bit slow and I had to ask for my lime sode three times. I had leek and potato soup which although tasty was watery and not creamy as I thought it would be. A very generous helping of chicken fried rice I did not quite manage to finish. A fresh lime soda and a diet coke were my drinks. I can't believe I didn't have my usual Kingfisher beer for my last night ?? The bill was just short of £6 - very good value.

I headed our stay "magic" because extraordinary things happened to us over 5 days in Kolkata, weeks later I told a driver we had about these extraordinary occurrences but he was not surprised. sir this is to be expected he said ... Kolkata is the magic city of India, And like magic the Elgin transports you back to British India, with it's decor, the grand old iron staircase, the upstairs verandah, but in what style, beautiful wicker chairs, the colonial dining/breakfast room, the garden. We had a very good room at the back, large, comfortable, some rooms looked a bit odd though, opening off the dining room or in strange corners, all very authentic but not sure id like to stay in them. Breakfast excellent. Some rather quirky bits, they put a place card with your name on it where you are supposed to sit for breakfast, with some very odd combinations of people, and then they change it every day!! You must read the captions on the many paintings and photos. A photo of some unknown captioned King George and Queen Mary on their honeymoon in India in 195!!!, First night we arrived very late and tired, air con in the room on, curtains drawn, bliss, then barking barking dogs, got up opened the curtains to discover double glazed windows wide open, closed them and all was good, as is the Elgin

Room very ordinary. Two beds joined together. Bed linen was stained and needed to be changed. Fridge was making a loud disturbing continuous noise. It was also propped up on a block of wood having lost a leg. Was told that it was very very old. Luckily they were able to change it. As it was removed its removal revealed lack of cleaning. So then it was cleaned. We then found that the bathroom needed to be cleaned again and as we looked on we saw layers of dirt being removed. The shower area did not have a curtain so the entire bathroom got wet every time someone used the shower. The TV did not work so that had to be changed as well. We noticed that staff do multiple tasks. Breakfast attendants also clean the room on the day, as well. So room cleaning requests have to wait till after they are available. There is constant noise from - reception, cafe, dining room, staff talking in the kitchen and of course the road and surrounds. Breakfast is very ordinary. Cafe attendant was not available at breakfast to make coffee except of morning one of our stay. I was charged the higher tax rate. I queried this, so after a number of phone calls and my insistence i was able to get the refund. Our experience of nostalgia was all of the above and plenty of photos and curios. We thought we'd have a comfortable stay but were very disappointed.

We came here to stay for 3 nights and 4 days and were given the “Shashi Kapoor” room. The sheets were dirty on day 1 and we had to get them changed after checking in. Also, there was water shortage and I was made to wait for 15 mins in the middle of a bath as the security guard forgot to pump the water. The bathroom taps seem like they were cleaned ages ago. The disgusting part was that the seat had stains. There is dust on the vintage stuff kept. The carpets are dirty and not dry cleaned since years. On the third day we went for our chores in the morning and returned at 8pm - the room had not been cleaned and was in the same state in which he had left that morning. The restaurant of the hotel shuts at 8.30 pm so if you want to have dinner, you better have it at 7 or have to go out to dine.

For the price they charge for a room, the experience is simply unacceptable. It would have been fine had they been charging 2-3k per night (incl. tax). You get way better hotels (5 stars) in the region of 5-6k. I have stayed in various heritage hotels but this was just not upto the mark. The only saving grace is the garden restaurant that too just for the ambience. The staff is polite though. All in all, a very disappointing experience. Wouldn’t recommend this hotel at all. Shell out a bit more and stay in a nice orthodox hotel.

A stay at this hotel will take you back to the Raj days. Recently restored we got to enjoy a room used by many celebrities who have visited Kolkata in the past. With a wide spread for breakfast you sure not gonna roam hungry in Kolkata if you decide to stay here. Our two nights stay will be cherished for a long time.

Heritage property which is extremely poorly maintained. I just love heritage buildings....but this is one which I would avoid and suggest all to avoid. Not one thing was good enough to mention. Location was ok. Rooms were poorly done. Bathrooms were ok but towels were not clean. Staff was good and tried to makeup for the shortfalls but couldn't. Breakfast was average and they served same spread for two consecutive days. Common area were not clean and upholstery was dusty.

It seems the hotel owners /management have not been maintaining the property for quiet some months now. Was amazed how they can allow such a heritage structure to get deteriorated to this level. It painfull to see this happening.

We checked in to the hotel (9Oct21) with the intention of staying for 5 nights in a heritage property. While the room provided to us was clean to look at, there was damp smell with the pillows and sheets. The water heater in the room was not working and we ended up with a cold shower after a daylong travel. The room was dusty and we could sniff the dust. Next morning I was shocked to find out that my neighboring rooms were being renovated and the fine dust from the renovation was entering our room. When asked to fix the geyser for hot water, we were asked to use the bathroom in an adjacent empty room. While already our first holiday morning was ruined, I found the breakfast was of poor quality and the house manager was rude enough to point out that the breakfast starts at 8 AM and guests have to be there at 8 AM and not later (we were down at 9 AM and breakfast was till 10 AM).
Post this I decided to vacate the hotel and the Elgin management were adamant of a no refund for the amount paid for 5 nights. I was offered poorer alternative rooms and decided against taking it while I was paying a premium price for the rooms and checked out and went to a different hotel and continued my holiday.
I would not recommend this property for a stay. If you are a fan of heritage buildings, yes, it oozes colonialism. You will be better off visiting this hotel as a part of "Can I just look inside" walk. I think the hotel management should have morally not accepted bookings while they were renovating the hotel. Needless to say, I feel cheated.

Little would you know about this place from outside, this is one of the most beautiful properties i have been to in Kolkata. With stunning natural views, this old building has been converted to a first class property where you get all the luxurious amenities that will make your stay comfortable.

The rooms are spacious , well ventilated, well maintained. The price is on the higher side but is justified because of the quality that they provide.

The food is even better, you can either enjoy a kingly meal or you may opt for a open cafe ambience depending upon your choice as they have 2 different set ups for dining. The look drastically changes during the night and i am still confused about which look did i like more, the morning one or the evening one.

Had tried many tasty dishes, the mushroom lasagne being my top favourite. You can also opt for quick bites while you chitchat with your friends in the evening.

A great place to stay while you are in Kolkata

This is an amazing hotel!! It's walls are covered in photographs of famous people who have stayed there and who have appreciated not only the place but the warm welcoming of the Oberoi's who own it. Diamond Oberoi specializes in boutique hotels and you will find many interesting people who choose to stay here and to return. Our room was spacious and interesting, some antique furniture etc. The food was excellent as was the service. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony upstairs for drinks and to visit with other guests. Our wonderful tour guide David Trattles has known the Oberoi's for many years and their is apparent mutual affection on both sides. I can't recommend it highly enough. I think it is popular so try and book ahead

Do they provide free toiletries?

Yes they do. We stayed 2 nights in November 2018,followed by another 2 nights in mid December 2018.In the short period of time we were away the place was getting a major face-lift and was improving constantly. Workmen were always around. However, the new Indian owners were still keeping it with a traditional old British Raj feel...although it did have a loveable quirkiness too! Lol! Elgin Fairlawn logo notepaper and envelopes were also provided...which in these days of social media and email I thought was a lovely touch. Enjoy... 🙂
