I completely agree with the reviews below from UK visitors. this hotel is on his way out! I like heritage hotels ( we have been in very nice ones) but this is not well maintained at all! bathrooms are in real need of renovation. In our bedroom one window was not closing ( on an external terrace) they could not...

I wanted a Heritage hotel, this was not quite what I expected, but I enjoyed my 3 nights there. It is a faded beauty with a quirkiness about it. The staff was friend for the most part, management was so so. The palms all around the house were tended to daily as was the old house, dusting and polishing on...

We spent three nights here. The hotel is full of history and well located near all the main sites of Calcutta. The bedrooms are comfortable and functional. Sure some people will think they need updating, but we liked the faded charm. The public rooms are nice, with lots of interesting items on the walls. The beer garden was a relaxing...

Did not stay because booking was not avaialable on the usual websites. We visited twice today. Saw some rooms which are badly in need of updating. One can only imagine how it might have been when Vi was alive. Now it is looking extremely shabby and uncared for. Staff were welcoming and friendly but not particularly helpful. We had coffee...

Once the most famous hotel in the city. Today it is an “endangered species”. If compared to the standard hotel chains, it impressed us with the charm of a colonial guesthouse. The decorum is antiquish, lovingly collected. It is privately owned and the owners, two sisters, born before India`s independence, demonstrate their faithfulness to the British Crown in every corner...

My second business trip to Kolkata in two months and I was determined to stay in an 'authentic' Calcutta hotel the old part of town. After checking out a few places on TripAdvisor, I settled in on this property and booked it online by sending them an email. The mail was replied to promptly and voila I had secured a...

We were excited at the prospect of staying here but the reality left us very disappointed. The place is rundown, poorly managed and dirty. I wouldn't dream of going back. Where do I start ..... We stayed on several occasions in different rooms during the course of a touring holiday. The rooms are of a decent size with high ceilings...

Arrived during DurgaPuja and Sudder Street was closed to traffic so we walked down to the hotel through all the festivities and parades which was exciting. The hotel is a little worn but eccentric in decor and a great base in Calcutta. The rooms are basic but comfortable and clean. The restaurant serves decent food along with Kingfisher beer. We...

The Fairlawn trades on its history - the fact it's been around a long time. The website will assure you it's got heart and soul, so much better than corporate chains, but what it's really got are problems. Its greatest feature was always the al fresco dining/drinking area out front, which is closed indefinitely due to 'police action'. All it...

Compared to other places I had stayed in India, I found the single room rate of 2700 plus 19.5% tax rather high, but I liked the building and the location is very good, so I was quite happy to pay that much. There is a sign on the counter which gives the tariffs and clearly states that the hotel provides,...
