It may be hard to get to via Kandy’s winding road network, but one’s perseverance is very well rewarded at Villa Rosa. What views! Well above the hustle and bustle of Kandy is this haven. Volker and his team have created a peaceful oasis above the city with breathtaking views up and down the Mahawali River valley. The rooms are spacious and splendidly original. The food is of an excellent standard, serving Western and Sri Lankan fare. Staff were unfailingly helpful and enthusiastic. Pool and views from it are worth the trip alone!

Hotel's Favourite
Family of four with two kids, 12 + 8. We stayed here for one night, however within two minutes of checking in we wished we’d booked for longer. This place is breathtaking - the view out across the pool looking down onto the river below is absolutely unreal, a picture can’t do it justice. This is a small boutique hotel run by a lovely owner. It’s incredibly peaceful, somewhere to come and get away from it all. The food was incredible, and you can walk right into the kitchen and speak to the chef, even watch and learn how they prepare the food should you wish. Location wise it’s perched up in the hills above Kandy, a short drive down to the town - and perfect in that aspect as there’s much to do and see in Kandy. The hotel also offer a free Tuk Tuk service to take you down to town, you have to find you’re own way back up mind! This place made a huge impression on us. Highly recommended. A superb boutique hotel with a marvellous location overlooking the river. Lovely new pool was superb. Owner and staff were amazing giving great service. All meals were first class and the best coffee in SriLanka! Quiet location - room, shower perfect.

We stayed at the superb Villa Rosa for 2 nights but wished it had been longer. When driving up the impossibly steep and narrow road to the very top you do wonder where you might be going but then when you arrive at this beautiful building in fantastic grounds with a simply awesome view over the river way way below it truly is special. We had the good fortune to have the honeymoon suite which sits even higher overlooking the river and giving us one amazing sunset and indulge in some birdwatching with the eagles soaring below. The food was exceptional where I had the Sri Lankan chicken curry both nights which comes with 5 additional curries and had only one repeat dish.Make time to come back after your travels and enjoy the views from the infinity pool over the river and hills beyond watching the many birds or the kites flying. Really special.

Initially very difficult to locate (Google maps a little confusing for our driver), outside of the city centre and up a very steep, poorly maintained road. However upon arrival the resulting views down to the river and across the valley made the search all worthwhile. We were warmly greeted and shown around including an introduction to the chef in the kitchen. Our room (number 4) was well appointed, comfortable and with fantastic river views including a balcony with separate dining capacity which we used for breakfast both mornings. The bathroom was massive and included a large walk in shower (pressure a bit low though) and free standing bath tub. We ate the Sri Lankan curries on both nights and enjoyed them a lot. Apparently the spices are toned down for Western taste buds! Disappointing that they had no red wine at all on the first night although they had corrected this by the following evening. The pool is small but welcome in the hot weather and frequently visited by a troop of mischievous monkeys who turn on the poolside taps for a drink! On our second day it was noticeable that there were some staff shortages although those working did a great job to plug the gaps including finding our missing laundry!

We stayed one night @ Villa Rosa, Kandy during our Sri Lankan trip. The drive to the hotel is pretty steep but well worth it for the view. The view @ sunrise is stunning & you can have breakfast watching the mist rise from the river below. Breakfast was good but not enough variety. There was a nice fruit platter & eggs to order with toast but nothing else. Could be better for the price they charge. We stayed @ the Annexe overlooking the hills. The rooms are well designed with a large bathroom.

Similar to an earlier reviewer, the moment we checked in here, I wished we had booked for longer than 2 nights. There were six of us, four of whom had rooms in the annexe but all were spacious and with balconies and views. Our view from the main hotel was just stunning, over the pool, the river and the countryside beyond; and it was so peaceful sitting on the balcony, just absorbing it all. The owner took a great deal of trouble to show us round on arrival and there was plenty to enjoy, from the library on the first floor with its large open windows to the gardens and pool. We also took a yoga class in the studio under the pool, which was spectacular as there was a rainstorm throughout and we were safely tucked away watching it come down outside. The breakfasts were delcious as was the dinner we had on our first night, and the staff very efficient and helpful. The hotel is a peaceful and cocooning retreat from the hustle and bustle of Kandy and we loved staying. I hope to be back one day!

Villa Rosa is located on top of a steep hill and has a magnificent view over the Valley. The hotel is very small - more like a large house. Our room was quite run down and not very clean. There was a mosquito net over the bed that had dead flies on it. The door to the room was warped and extremely difficult to close. We needed to keep the curtains closed because the design of the hotel means some of the rooms look directly into each other. The food was only ordinary. The hotel played very poor quality loud live music for around 5 hours so we couldn't sleep or read. Some of the other hotel guests got extremely drunk and ran around the hotel yelling and shrieking until nearly midnight and the hotel staff did nothing about it. There was no tv in the room, no phone and no number to contact reception. I'm only giving 2 stars because of the view. I do not recommend this hotel.

This is our 3rd time at Villa Rosa and it never disappoints. We always choose the Honeymoon suite because of its lovely big terrace that looks down onto Kandy and the river, which is magical at night. It’s a perfect escape (but near enough) from the hustle and bustle of Kandy. There is a lovely new pool to sit by which is heavenly. Delicious food and great staff, in true Sri Lankan style always happy and smiley - especial thanks as always to Nilanka Silva who always looks after us so well. Can highly recommend.
