We were a group of 8 (9 with driver) that stayed at The Thinnai from September 2nd - to September 9th 2021 - reservation id RS6900 - and we are submitting a formal complaint against The Thinnai whose actions ultimately cost us thousands of dollars in damages. We booked the hotel after doing some deep research on google and review sites. We liked the green and renewable commitment that the hotel was offering. Furthermore our driver recommended it as he had stayed there several times when it first opened. As we arrived on September 2nd, it was clear there were no other guests than us staying at the hotel, and despite the reception manager was friendly, we made notice that there were no COVID related signage around, and we were not asked to sign in to the regular log book - as we have been accustomed to in other hotels and at the level 1 villa we were staying at in Galle. Our temperature was not taken either. The morning after (September 3rd 2021) I went to the reception after doing my morning workout - around 7AM and there were no staff anywhere to be found. We had to ask a film crew that were taking wedding pictures as to what we had to do to get to the staff. One film crew called the manager and 5 minutes later he arrived. There had not been any night manager or staff on the premises up until then. Our business in Jaffna meant that we would be away the whole day from morning until evening curfew - and I had to go to the gate security every morning to have them call the manager so that the hotel could be staffed early enough for us to order breakfast and just get a staff presence at the hotel. All through this the COVID procedures were non-existing and staff wore masks loosely. Not once were we submitted to a temperature check. On September 5th we got a call in the afternoon from the hotel that there were guests asking to see us. This was very odd to us as anyone we were dealing with in our business relations knew we were only staying there to sleep and not receive guests. When the hotel manager told us the names of the guests we immediately told them to escort them out and call the police. This was individuals that had committed fraud on us a period of 7-8 months prior to us going to Sri Lanka. We had made it very clear to these individuals we do not want to have any contact with them - but yet they were now at the Hotel. We made it crystal clear that we did not want any visitors from anywhere and that these individuals were particularly not welcomed - they had to get off the premises and we asked for the Hotel to contact the police - they refused to do so. On the following day, September 6th 2021 at 9:50 PM we arrive after yet another long day doing our business - and as we approach the security gate our driver honks the horn to signal we would like to come in. The security acts very slow and as the van comes to a halt outside the gates waiting for them to be opened. Multiple people approach the van from the back and start signaling and knocking the windows. We realize at this point these are the individuals from the day before. We inform the driver immediately and he yells at the security staff that are still not opening the gate to open the gate quickly, let us in, and quickly shut the gate after us as these people are not allowed to come close to us or the van. As the van enters through the gate there are another 50-70 meters to the parking space, and as we are parking I look back to see that the gate remains open, and these individuals are walking towards the van. The security does nothing. We later find out that the Hotel lets these individuals wait in the lobby for 3 hours (despite us explicitly telling them the day before we want NO guests) and then after visiting hours finish - let them stay outside the hotel for another hour. They are too close to the van for us to have time to get out - we have 5 children with us - so our business manager quickly gets out of the van and rushes to get the hotel manager as the driver locks the doors. They hammer on the windows and the male individual also tries to open the doors. This is an extremely stressful situation for us and for the children in the van, as we are de facto trapped inside the van. I start the torch on my phone and shine out the van, so the individuals can not get a proper view of who and where we are inside the van. They keep hammering the windows and doors for a while, while the night manager comes and they start slowly going back - but they are never commanded to leave or properly handed as being a security threat. They only walk back 20-30 meters all while the gate remains open, and the security remains at the gate house - one even sits on a chair leaned back with hands behind his head. As the individuals slowly go back we get the kids out the van and rush to a room to be securely taken care of. We start openly complaining to the night manager and a few staff members that have assembled - we demand they call the police - and they again refuse to do so - the individuals are still on premises inside the gates - around 5-10 meters from the gate. They are not moving - so I go around them to the left to approach the security as they are still not doing anything - I shout at them to escort these individuals out. The individuals that have entered without permission are not wearing masks and are posing a threat to us and everyone's health. They do not comply with any of my requests but simply stand there. As I shout and wave my arms, demanding them to call the police, the individuals slowly walk just outside the gate - which remains open. I shout for them to close the gate, and they unwillingly do so, very slowly. I now walk back towards the van, where the night manager, bell boy and a few other staff are there to further complain about the security management of the situation. The time has now past 10PM which is curfew, but the individuals remain just outside the gates waiting. We make it clear that we do not trust the security in the hotel, and we demand that they are relieved immediately and that the staff call the police. They do nothing - they all just stand there. We demand several times that they get the police involved as the individuals are violating curfew rules as they remain outside the gate after 10PM, but nothing happens. I again walk back towards the security and this time I film using my phone because we have to make sure the individuals are removed and that we can safely go back to our rooms and take care of our children's trauma during this situation. We demand answers from the security guys and while we are asking them questions (as they are not answering at all) they are not doing anything to make the individuals go away - on the contrary one of the security are conversing with one of the individuals in a much more friendly tone and wording - as if they know each other well. This is the last straw for us, and we are now fully committed to getting the security removed, as we can not be sure they are not letting these individuals in after we go back to our rooms. A security manager arrives, but as he sees I am filming he is just walking away from me and the camera, stating that he cannot speak english or tamil. As discussion happens, one of the staff members is not wearing a mask (attached image from video) - and we later find out this is the resident manager of the hotel - he never identifies himself that night. I ask many times during the discussion to talk to a person higher up in the management and I demand to get the CCTV footage that shows the ineptitude of the security in the hotel. We demand he gets rid of the 2 security men, but it takes a long time, and a lot of convincing before he finally, openly annoyed to do so, asks them to go. At this time the door next to the gate is still not properly closed, and I go to it to shut it. The individuals still remain outside the gates well over curfew time, but staff refuse to involve the police. After 45 mins of discussion the security manager tells the security to leave - and we inform the staff that we want an emergency meeting with top management the same night if possible or at least morning after. We also again demand CCTV footage. The morning after, as I go to get the CCTV footage the reception manager calls the resident manager who comes to meet me. At this time I can see he was the same person as the night before - and he starts to walk back saying that the hotel policy is for me to email the GM and ask for the footage - he can not hand it over. So I demand he call the GM on the spot so I can get the footage. I keep an audio recording of this - that can be shared on request (as well as the video footage from the night before) - I talk to the GM and he informs me that unless the police requests it or a lawyer - they can not hand it over. We are on our way to file a police report so we unwillingly accept the situation - but we request that the resident manager check the CCTV footage on the spot to make sure it is not deleted. He accepts but still does nothing. We think he goes to check the footage, but then 3 mins later see him in the cafeteria section eating breakfast. I approach him to ask him status, and he says he will let us know when he has reviewed it - if we leave a number at the reception. We do that but he never calls. I do have on the recording that he accepts that if the CCTV footage turns out to be deleted - this is done in bad faith and as a result in the hotel trying to create a cover up of the situation. We go and file an official police report, which you can also see attached. As a result of this hotel's absolutely horrible handling of the situation - we have had to arrange for remote psychological trauma sessions with our kids and therapists that has cost us thousands of dollars on top of us having to take serveral additional costly measures to secure our kids. Top Hotel management was fully aware of the situation, fully informed and even briefed by us - and still nothing has been done - so we demand the maximum penalty that any government agency can do, is put on this sorry excuse for hotel management. They do not follow normal COVID protocols, they are not staffing their hotel at night and they are letting people pass security that is unwanted by paying guests and that they do not wear masks. Bottom line, they should not be allowed to run a hotel at all. There is NO SAFETY for guests under this management at all. They are a disgrace to the hard working hospitality sector - who are all suffering under the current situation.

Outstanding hotel with very professional management and friendly staff. Large, very comfortable suites with a good sized bedroom and living room/kitchenette. Great attention to detail in design, for example the room lighting. Professionalism of management was really noticeable in the hotel routines (for example daily cleaning and chlorinating pool, checking lights etc). Location is perfect: quite central, but really quiet. (Note however there is no garden to sit in, although you can sit outside near the pool or in the downstairs cafe.) The restaurant is a lovely large 4th floor space with views over the green surrounding area, teak pillars and windows - and delicious food. The restaurant had big open windows and was very airy, which made us feel safe in these covid times. The staff were very kind and efficient. Best of all, when I left a piece of clothing behind, the staff went to great lengths to find it, wash and press it and post it to me all the way from Jaffna to Colombo - I paid cash on delivery and it all cost less than 350 rupees! (thanks also Pronto couriers). Thank you so much Thinnai and we will be back.
