Just the perfect getaway. From the chalets to food to service, everything was on point. No hesitation in recommending the place and to visit back again. Make sure to take the ago tour. You may kayak, cycle or take a stroll in the vast property.
Kalundewa Retreat is absolutely a wonderful place. Peace and tranquility Kalundewa offers is simply amazing. We (me and my wife) stayed for two nights and one night we spent in chalet "Karanda" and the other in chalet "Kumbuk". Both are really nice but "Kumbuk" was better than "Karanda" as the view is even better and relaxing. Most of the chalets offers complete privacy. Food was top notch. We personally thanked the chef few times as it was really that good. Tastes are very delicate and you feel the effort they put to make their food special. The General Manager was so friendly and he personally accompanied us for a very insightful nature walk. We learnt a lot of new things about nature and wild life as he happened to be a wild life expert. There are so many things to do and enjoy. Wild life, sceneries, bike rides, boat rides, etc... All in all, this was one of the best experiences in our lives. Very very highly recommended. Thank you very much for the staff of Kalundewa Retreat for making our stay so special and memorable. …
Absolutely beautiful resort. The view of the paddy fields and large rock is amazing. The accommodation is great, specially recommend trying the floating villa. Food was great and friendly and helpful staff. Large area to walk around with a complimentary boat ride (recommended) and kayaking. Lot of birds to see.

Kalundewa Retreat was a last minute addition to our honeymoon list, a replacement to one of the city hotels we had doubts in patronizing due to the pandemic measures, but soon turned out to be one of the most tranquil, serene places that we never knew existed in Sri Lanka. We set out to Kalundewa from Kandalama and reached their following an adventurous drive. (Tip - please do not over rely on Google maps as the road shown to us was way too dangerous, all the while there was a perfectly asphalted road leading towards Kandalama as we later found out). As if to prelude us on what was in store, we were greeted by a peacock at the entrance of the hotel. The staff were very hospitable and friendly, and greeted us with a papaya sorbet quenching our thirst and fatigue. A quick guide on the premises and the excursions and activities available. Kayaking in the upper lake, bird watching, cycling, hiking... there were way too many activities that couldn’t be covered in a day. We had booked the luxurious boat villa, alias ‘Nil Manel,’ which was beyond any expectations. The journey to the villa itself was adventurous and we were accompanied by the ever so reliable Dilshan. The villa had an in-built jacuzzi and was a great experience. The food was delicious, especially the Sri Lankan menu. The food was brought to the villa by boat and with it came the cleaning crew (although we were there only for a day). And when they left we realized there were few surprise gifts including some chocolates and decor. It was a lovely gesture by the hotel. The hotel, surrounded by the lush paddy fields (rented out to villagers of the own community) and two beautiful lakes that were called upper and lower lakes boasts of rich wild life. The hotel has two fishing cat conservation sites and are full of peacocks, storks, land and water monitors, various species of butterflies and some endemic flora and fauna. If you are lucky as we were, you could definitely spot an otter or even a grizzled giant squirrel (as pictured). The staff were very friendly and the service was great. We were even given a free tour around the hotel and the overall experience was great. We will be coming back soon. Pro tip - it is a vast plot of land, so book for two or more days to explore the location and nature. Pro tip again - during the season, Kalundewa hosts a plethora of migrant birds. At around 5.30pm, you could see thousands of storks (literally and I am not even joking) gathering on the tree branches (pictured). An amazingly picturesque moment, initially we thought they were flowers or the nature of trees, but to our amazements we realized it was a great phenomenon of nature. …
