It was more than two hours in 4x4's to reach the camp so not as atmospheric an arrival as the desert camp ex Merzouga via camels. The camp itself, however, was far better appointed that the first one. The tents were huge, you could stand up in them and there were electrical outlets. There was a large, central area for late afternoon mint tea and nibbles. The tajine for dinner was better too. For more tents, the ablution block was smaller. The dunes of Erg Chegaga were of course climbed for sunset, the atmosphere compromised by a young German brat. Many locals provided evening entertainment with singing and musical instruments. A minor sandstorm on the way out only added to the allure of the experience.

My wife and I booked the Sahara Luxury Excursion through the hotel. We did this for two reasons. The first was because some friends of ours had just done the tour two weeks before and had an amazing experience. They had great pictures of the sunset and sunrise, rode on camels, had a campfire and had nothing but great things to say...

I’ve seen Pinterest “nailed it” pictures that are closer than what happened for our trip. It was absolutely horrible!!! We booked the trip and didn’t get any confirmation or itinerary. Our transportation was terrible. The trip took an extra 5 hours because the driver kept stopping at places we didn’t want to see. The lunch that we paid a significant amount for only had options with onions (my wife has an allergy to onions...and the hotel knew this before and during us booking this trip). We had to go and find another option for lunch and pay for it twice.

We finally arrived at the camp location just as the sun was setting...we had to run just to get some pictures with a little bit of light (the sun was already down). They wanted us to have tea instead...are you kidding me! I can drink Moroccan tea anywhere in Morocco...I didn’t book and pay for a Sahara Luxury Excursion to have tea instead of watch the sunset over the dunes.

The worst part was no camel rides...I mean, who travels all the way to the Sahara Desert to not ride the camels...this is the whole point of the trip!!!! I had specifically asked the person that we met in Zagora when we transferred into the 4x4 about camel rides. He said we would get a minimum of a 1 hour ride. He then asked if we had any food preferences and we told him that my wife has an allergy to onions. They did manage to provide food at the camp that didn’t have onions.

I asked about riding the camels and then they pretended to not speak any English...even though they had just reconfirmed that we would have a minimum of a 1 hour camel ride at the camp. Then when they “understood” what we were asking, which of course was after I showed them a picture of 4 other people riding camels at a nearby camp to ours, they said that the camel rides were for tourists!!!! Unreal...

We paid a significant amount to stay in a tent with a toilet and shower. The tent was clean...I will give them that, but the toilet and shower didn’t work. I’ll let your imagination run with what it is like to sleep in a tent after you’ve gone number two in a toilet that doesn’t work...

We had to leave the camp shortly after sunrise, so we traveled for over 24 hours to spend 11 hours at the camp. Again, had to pay for our own lunch because all the choices had onions.

I had to tell the driver several times to slow down (he was driving over 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone). The roads are not very good and wind through the mountains...He was so upset when we got to the hotel that he threw a coke bottle at my wife.

I explained all of this to the hotel, because we paid the hotel for the trip...and nothing. No discount, no refund, no offer to send us again through a different company to have the once in a lifetime experience (which is what we paid for)...They called Caravane Du Sud and they just said that my wife had an allergy and that is why there was no camel ride...Really!!!!!!!!! AN ONION ALLERGY MEANS NO CAMEL RIDE????

Clearly they didn’t care...they already got paid and had no need to deliver what was paid for.

We got a Luxury Sahara Desert Trip without the luxury and camel rides.

Stay Away...book your once in a lifetime experience somewhere else...and shame on you Trip Advisor for giving this place a certificate of excellence!

The luxury tents were in their own compound a few hundred meters from the main camp. We arrived anout an hour before sunset and were whisked to our luxury camp tent. It was quite luxurious for the desert! The comfortable king bed and running water toilet were excellent. The shower however was a hit and miss on water pressure. It felt lovely to have our private bathroom and enjoyed the welcome fruit basket and small sofa in our tent.

The supper was outstanding. Breakfast was a little late and it was spartan.

We were not given any schedule of events, so we had no idea when dinner was nor our departure time. No ice was available in camp, but they nicely volunteered to put our beer in a refrigerator in the other camp. It took a while to retrieve it.

They had laid out cushions, as if we would all sit around for entertainment. Eventually we walked with flashlights in the night to the non-luxury camp next to ours for the music and entertainment.

I'd highly recommend this camp, just be aware of a few shortfalls.

The camp personnel were always courteous and a few even spoke English.

I would have the following recommendations for the camp:

1. give every guest a schedule of events / an itinerary when they arrive with times, music here or at other camp, dinner time, a departure time, etc.

2. a cell phone number to call and ask for things like turn up the water pressure or other questions

It was amazing, the dinner was beautiful and all workers were kind and polite. It was an amazing experience and I loved listening to stories about their life and the history of their culture. I don't think I have mastered the technique of riding a camel but still a great experience. When was one girl was really ill/ sick they took very good care or her and made sure she was okay. 100% recommend this company. Loved this experience.
The dinner and the breakfast were so good! definitely needed it after awkwardly riding a camel for an hour! Big thank you to all of your staff for making our short 2 days very special!
