It is hard to review this property because in relation to universal accommodation standards it would be so low Flo Rida would never be able to get back up again. For Perhentian Islands where all accommodation is extremely run down for what you pay for this would be a higher/average rating. WHAT YOU GET: A box like room (which gets EXTREMELY hot in the day - don't stay in much longer than sunrise or you'll get hotboxed with your own CO2 emissions) with private bathroom. INCLUDED: Towels (deposit), rat-like scurry noises around the bathroom, good quality mosquito net (haven't seen such a flamboyant shade of pink in a net before - certainly perks up the drab room), dirty toilet bowl (if you're as lucky as us), a fan with THREE speeds (does little to combat the daytime hotbox but is bearable at night). Working wifi! A million squillion mosquitos. NOT INCLUDED: Toilet roll, soap, 24/7 electricity (It states that they run the electricity 7pm-7am but it was actually on longer than that when we were there). CONCLUSION: Only for the acquired budget holidaymaker. We paid 180RM for 3 nights and did enjoy our stay after a slightly dismayed start. Ewan's restaurant is surprisingly decent - go get the oreo or mango ice blend!…

Please read! August 2018 and later Ewans Place is a budget lodge between coral and long beach. The placement is great and the employees were nice. However... The great reviews tricked us for booking this place. We are kind of used to budget places, but we had a certain amount of problems which you would not wish to have on holiday. The room was ok for spending the night. It was really warm even though we had a fan. The bathroom was not clean (it actually looked like they did not clean it at all. And there was this scent that smelled like pee. Also, our door-lock was broken and we had no water 2 times in 4 days. If you’re ok with all this, your good to go. But do not expect what the reviews tell you.

Walls and ceilings were full of mold, bathroom ceiling was falling apart with pieces falling on the floor, tap had to be held in place over the sink when used (makes washing hands a bit difficult), and sink water ran out onto the floor instead of into the drain. No bug screens on any windows, so we had to keep them closed making the room a sauna. Two extremely dirty and dusty fans were available but were so loud it was impossible to sleep with them on. Another thing keeping us up was a giant generator situated right across from the houses.

Room was clean with new bed and even spacious. Location wise is in between long beach to senja bay. Basically room in jungle a bit and not directly facing sea. But with a rate of 90 ringgit (walk in weekday) it is value for money.

The Asian food was very bad here but alright price for island. Not huge portions. My soup was gloopy. I did enjoy the tuna club sandwich a lot. It was a good portion with a random fried egg on the side. Make sure to ask them to cook it on both sides because the egg is raw on top. It's not the best but it's cheap and cheerful for perhentian kecil...

We stayed here having booked no accommodation and were lucky enough to get 3 huts. The rooms are spacious and the beds are clean and comfy! It looked like the best budget accommodation on the island. Located near coral beach, it's quieter than long beach which is definitely a good thing. The restaurant serves delicious food at a good price! Stay here if you can and are lucky enough to get one of the 8 huts

Ewan's: Pros: Powerful fan Bed was big and reasonably comfortable Large mosquito net Water pressure was good (barring one instance where the water stopped completely for a few hours) Shop on site Nice staff Could book on arrival and extend each day flexibly Cons: The bathroom looked as though it had never been cleaned, congealed soap, toothpaste all over the sink and wall. The tap didn't really work and was very rusty. The concrete floor was gritty and we wore our flip flops in there the whole time. There were dead insects and lizard droppings over the walls. Paying 100 per night we would expect a clean room even if it is basic. We had to ask for bedsheets and towels. Pillows were very hard. Wi-fi barely worked (if at all) which made onward travel tricky. No path to the accommodation - bring a torch as it is not lit and is uneven The windows and doors were very stiff and we struggled to lock them securely Overall it is one of the better budget options on the island, but compared to other rooms we have stayed in during our SEA trip it was not good in terms of value for money. A little TLC in the rooms would make this place so much better. Accommodation on the island: The accommodation options on the island are not great, they are all overpriced for the quality you receive. Being an island you expect the price to be higher, but we have stayed on many beautiful beach islands and felt this was a particular issue here. July is high season so this adds to the high costs. We arrived on the 7am ferry and asked at all of the different accommodations on both beaches. Three places on long beach would not offer rooms to non-divers and the nicer accommodations were 800+ per night. However, there were some camp sites for those willing to sleep in a tent and one place offered very very basic shacks for 40 ringette with shared bathrooms. The cheaper accommodation at Coral Bay was fully booked as their beach shacks were 70-90 Per night, the two nicer places at either end of the beach and the Ombak resort had rooms but they were starting at 250 a night so are not backpacker friendly (the prices were much cheaper during low season).…

Ewan' s Place has not changed much over the years but it is still remain basic, clean and affordably priced. We were surprised that they were very busy during the quiet Ramadhan season. We would definately stay here again. P.S. Try to book early to avoid disappointment!

Ewan and his family are gracious hosts. The cabins are basic fan bungalows with cold water showers and mosquito nets over the bed. I went to dive so it was a perfect place to sleep. The cabins are too hot during the day to stay in, so if you want a place to hang out, stay somewhere else. Even if you don't stay here you should come eat as it is the best food on the island and costs less than other inferior restaurants on the beach. Wifi only works in the restaurant. Like most islands, it is very slow.
