It's hard to know where to start... firstly this is not the same place as the lonely planet recommends or the pictures on hostelworld suggest, it seems to have moved in recent months to an abandoned office block. On arrival we found that the reception is located on the 4th floor, so quite a trek, only to find no-one there....

Our first impression of The Highlands was not great. Firstly, the premises shown on the photos online is not the one they are currently occupying which seems a bit cheeky to me. However, we are not really put off by things like that, and actually this on its own would not have been enough to warrant a bad review. The...

Having touted itself as a tourist centre with lots of info on travel, we found no such thing! We arrived and lumped our bags up 3 steep flights of stairs to he hostel. It looks ok at first glance- table for breakfast, rooms and communal lounge but then we were taken to the floor below to our room. The hostel...

It is quite easy to find the location, just opposite the Imperial Mall. You have to go to level 3 to register. The place is simple and clean. The rooms are not in very good condition but acceptable. Helen, the girl who helped us, speaks good English and was very helpful to offer advice. A white board offers all sorts...

Our visit was excellent with very helpful staff. They helped us out with basically everything to book tours to Mulu, including a highly recommended homestay just outside the Mulu park. Please note that the hostel has recently moved to Jln. Merpati lot 839, which is a bit more central and just opposite the Imperial Mall (users of the LP: the...

Stayed one night in Miri before flying to Mulu National Park. The nice lady who owned the place fixed us a good deal with a freelance guide in the park, made sure we had a free ride to the airport and let us store our luggage, while in Mulu, for free. When we came back, we could take a hot...

I have stayed two nights at the Highlands: Thursday and Friday! Thursday I had a very pleasant impression: The hostel is spotlessly clean and the manager Joann might not be the most amicable person, but she was friendly enough and actually quite helpful when you asked her something. There were very few people staying and I had a very quiet...

This was a nice little guesthouse and right for the price. It was spotlessly clean, great to have cable tv in a nice little common area, free breakfast and coffee was great. Joanne enjoyed a couple of beers downstairs at the bar with us and was genuinely really helpful. I even saw her be a great source of info to...

We stayed here twice during our trip, the first time for 2 nights, the second time just for 1 night. The rooms and communal areas were kept very clean, and the communal area was a great place to relax and meet other guests. The internet access seemed fine to me (contrary to other reviews). Joanna (who runs it) was good...

at highlands we were constantly made to feel uncomfortable. the owner is possibly the rudest staff at any hostel i've ever stayed in. from the minute we arrived she demanded money and then proceeded to treat us like children staying in her home, telling us off if we didnt remove our shoes, she also removed the a.c. remote control from...
