This hotel has the potential to be a lot better than it actually is. It is built into an 18th Century Ancient Vietnamese Village. The accommodation is actually built into the Ancient Houses. The rooms are comfortable but could be much better with a little work. Some of the Ancient Houses are actually renovated 18th century buildings, some have been built to look like the original, in the late 1990’s. They have done a great job replicating them. (When travelling in Vietnam, one has to remember the years of war and embargoes placed on the country and how 3rd world it really still is. Tourism is very much in its infancy and held back by lack of investment.)
Some of the newer houses have been built too close to the granite outcrops for which this area is famous for and falling rocks have destroyed at least 4 units. I hope no one was staying there at the time!
The price was a bit steep for Vietnam and the standard but the idea is great and the setting is astounding. We were 2 of only 4 people staying so the restaurant was not open but breakfast was great.
It is walking distance to many restaurants in Tam Coc itself.
I would recommend staying here for the stunning location and concept but I would not book. I would rock up and check it out first and then if not to your liking chose elsewhere.

We had seen a review for this 'hotel' and were intrigued, but found it hard to find on line, as it is described variously as 'the ancient house', 'a converted temple' etc. It is all of those things, but it is important to get the address exactly right (see above), as it is not in Ninh Binh itself but in a much quieter, more pleasant little town of Tam Coc. The taxi from Ninh Binh would have been a lot cheaper if I had copied down the name of the hotel correctly! But if you do that, public bus to the main town and taxi to the hotel is perfectly possible. It is just off the main square, a short way along a quiet unmade road, and very handy for the boat dock at Cam Coc, so you can hire an early boat and try to get ahead of the tourist bus loads who descend later in the morning. These all depart by 5 pm or earlier and the little town reverts to its peaceful self and is a very pleasant place to wander round in the evening. There are plenty of underused restaurants as so few people stay in town, thought he backpackers hostel is busy. It is also nice to walk down the lane the hotel is in, away from the town, and walk to the temple through the rice paddies and along the river.
The Lang Viet Co is a delightful complex of restored old houses and pavilions, most of them removed from their original sites and rebuilt in paved courtyards alongside one of the karst hills and the river. We stayed in 'an ancient house', it had two very comfortable large bedrooms either side of an open fronted living area, it did indeed feel like stepping back in time. We ate our breakfast n a pavilion across the courtyard and could lounge about in any number of others, including the temple or royal one, as we four were the only guests for 3 of the 4 nights we were there. The manager is very pleasant and the staff are delightful. French is the second language here at the hotel (not in town) not English, but that was not a problem. Dinner can be brought in and though the hot pot they do was wonderful, it was very expensive, you would be better to walk into town and seek out the restaurant it came from. It was a unique experience to stay in this sort of living museum, though in wet weather it might not be so pleasant, getting from building to building. We thoroughly enjoyed staying somewhere so different.

This hotel makes you feel like you are staying in a museum. Set as old Vietnamese houses, with replicas of servant quarters (I believe), a beautiful pagoda, pond and cave in the back, and an organic vegetable patch as well as fruit trees. Rooms are fine, and bathroom was spotless. Only three hundred meters from the launching spot of the boats, and on a road with beautiful rural sceneries, that leads you to a authentic spiritual temple not visited by tourists or tour groups. Most people stay there for a night and move on, so I was feeling like I was the only one in the place. I would have given it a five star due to its uniqueness and the kindness of its staff, but for the fact that it has one serious drawback if you plan to spend some time in the hotel. There is no one mending the place apart from a very nice housekeeper and a cook that unfortunately spoke only Vietnamese, and occasionally the owners (?) who spoke no English but were very helpful when you could get your message across. There is also a very very nice and extremely helpful young lady who is the one in charge with the communication and who speaks perfect English, but she appears only towards the evening as she probably works or study somewhere else. Unfortunately too, I got unlucky the last day and night, when I almost got bitten by the dog's owner, as well as a mosquito that kept me awake (they do have coils that they place in front of the room , maybe I should have had it inside ), as well as a mysterious sewage smell that came from the bathroom the third night. All in all, I think just because of the originality of this place, it is worth staying there rather than in an ordinary hotel.

If you want a luxury hotel with all the amenities this is not the place BUT if you want the once in a lifetime experience of staying in one of the most beautiful places this is it. A converted Maoist/Buddhist temple right by the port of Tam Coc with it's stunning riverways and limestone cliffs (The Ha long bay on land version!) The hotel is basic but with comfortable and clean rooms, with what one can only describe as rustic bathrooms. An adequate breakfast served by wonderfully happy smiling staff but the bonus of this place is that you will probably be the only guest and you can walk around the ever peaceful and spiritual atmosphere in total silence. I've travelled far and wide but this place is a pure delight for lovers of culture and tranquility.

This is not a luxury resort nor boutique hotel but a converted taoist monastery, ancient and stunning buildings in courtyards surrounded by amazing countryside and rivers to explore by foot and boat - take the boats as early or as late as possible or you will be sharing the amazing trip with hundreds of day trippers. This hotel is for those of you who want a once in a lifetime stay - the rooms are adequate, the bathrooms way out of date and there is no TV or with fi but who needs all that when you ate in this the most amazing setting.Anyway it's a five minute walk into charming Tam CIC where you can eat at Minh's on the corner overlooking the square where you will be looked after as if you are a member of the family. This place is a must for adventurers- the stuff of dreams.

Its like a ghost hotel, no staff anytime anywhere.
Its like an old village but they really don't take care of the houses.
It needs a lot of works to be a 25 usd hotel, it should coast maximum 10usd.
Matress was terrible and the breakfast is only until 9.
And on the top of it, the staff didnt speak any english

This is a gem of a place, located right in Tam Coc but a mere 5 minute walk away from the busy tourist-hub center. You'd never guess the proximity with the silence of this peaceful haven with ancient artifacts and a compound, although built in the last 10 years, makes one feel they are transported back in time.
The rooms and breakfast (a fried egg, baguette, cheese, jam, banana, and hot drink) are very simple but we appreciated being in a place with character, a rarity we have found in much of Vietnam.

This hotel is a preserved old-time Vietnamese architecture. Indeed this is a simple hotel and it might be overpriced in Vietnam (US$28) but the environment is so wonderful that I feel it is a paradise especially in a quiet early morning. The rice field next to it is also reminiscent of childhood. See pictures.

The best ancient house. It has beautiful view. There is a tour by boat near by. 5 min walk to the market. The room is cozy, a bit old. Sometimes the air-conditioner does not work. Some room has TV and some has not. I was changed the room 3 times due to the air-conditioner. If you want dinner, have to ask in advance because not enough guests. Breakfast has two types western or vietnamese. The restaurants nearby are not very delicious or cheap. Free computer at the receiption

I found this lovely place on trip advisor before going to Ninh Binh and I wasn't disappointed. It was exactly the experience I was looking for. Yes the rooms are basic but that's what you would expect and if you want more there are other places you could stay. The setting is magical, staff friendly, so quiet and peaceful, and breakfast was lovely.

Our village is 300 aways from the Tam Coc Boat-Trip Wharf. +If you come by: -----A tourist bus: Which usually drops you at the Tam Coc Boat-Trip Wharf's Yard. Then standing at the ticketcouter/center of that yard, you can see a small road leads to Thai Vi Temple. Walk along that road for 200 meters. And you will see our huge-unmissable entrance gate of our village. -----A local bus: Which ussally drops you at Ninh Binh Bus Station, in NinhBinh city(8KM away). You have to find a Cab/Taxi (Plenty at every bus/train station) to tell them Our Address:''Làng Việt Cổ-Cố Viên Lầu ở Bến thuyền khu du lịch Tam Cốc ''. Keep in mind, the best taxi brand in Vietnam is Mai Linh Taxi(The Green Ones). The ride should cost about 4-5usd (only if you took a good taxi firm). -----A railway train: Which drops you at Ninh Binh City 's Train Station.
