On one of the nicest beach in Guatemala, between the Chiquimulila lagoon and the Pacific ocean, you'll find Johnny's Place. The charm and laid back atmosphere is what made Johnny's Place the most popular spot on the beach. Ideal for family retreats or partys with friends! We have diverse housing choices for all tastes and budgets. All our rooms and suites has been recently renovated (2014) with new beds, a/c and new furniture. An excellent choice for backpackers ($6 with breakfast included!), for couples (rooms with a/c, suites, master suites with outside baths and sea views and also for families or groups (private bungalows with swimming pool). the hotel has a large brand new pool and 3 smaller pools for the bungalows. Our restaurant and sports bar is on the beach facing the ocean. You will find hammocks, ping pong table, pool table and cable tv. In the afternoon, you can play beach volleyball or beach soccer or simply watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean; fabulous! Our menu is varied with choices of appetizers, pastas, pizzas, seafoods, tacos, burgers, paninis, salads, streaks, grilled fish and desserts. Quality of food, cocktails and atmosphere make Johnny's Place the most popular spot on the Pacific coast in Guatemala. We've spent loads of time in Guatema, but visited Monterrico for the first time in January 2020 for some sun and sand. Though we stayed somewhere far more expensive (booked in advance), we wished we had stayed at Johnny's. Every small block of rooms had its own adorable little pool - some with jets - and there were second floor suites overlooking the ocean. We went to Johnny's daily because the restaurant FAR surpassed anything else we found in town in terms of flavour, value for money, presentation and customer service. We had the most fantastic nachos, which they made vegetarian for us even though that wasn't on the menu with loads of melted cheese, guacamole, frijoles and pico de gallo. Another day we had the best ceviche of our lives. Try the Leche de Tigre ceviche! The Licuados are also amazing. The vibe is super chill and there are various seating styles under their thatch roof overlooking the beach as well as some beach huts and hammocks. All in all our favourite place in Monterrico!!

Went here on a Saturday night, decent vibe during dinner time but some shady people moved in after about 10 PM. My friend got dizzy and then fell unconscious while leaving the bar. Brought her to the hospital the next day and a blood test found Ketamine and GHB in her system. Someone slipped her some dangerous date rape drugs into her drink. Be careful at this place, especially later at night, and don’t go alone.

Our group of 7 had a blast over the weekend. I had been here before this was my second time. First things first when our group arrived we enjoyed a few cold ones by the pool. They have a very nice clean saltwater pool perfect for laying out in and soaking up the sun with a bar right next to it. We then enjoyed a fantastic lunch at the the beachside restaurant. The food is so delicious, we were all passing around plates to try everything. After a brief beer and food induced nap in our respective rooms we took a nice sunset stroll along the beach 🌊🌅. In the rooms they offer nice clean shower and full bathroom, clean linens and towels. Everything you need to sleep relaxed. After showering up we went to utilize the pool table they have there. There was a DJ and we boogied on right by another bar they have by the dance floor. Eventually we were hungry again so we had our sit down dinner and not a single complaint about our food, delicious again. All of us slept pretty early from having such a fun day. In the morning we did a group banana boat tour and some of us went wakeboarding after a beautiful drive down the beach to the nearest town. 🤙 amazing time, amazing hosts. Will definitely be back!!

I traveled here with a group of 18 students for 2 nights as part of a weekend getaway. I was expecting that all 9 rooms reserved would have AC, bathrooms (in room), shower (in room) and 2 beds. What we got were rooms with no washrooms and no showers. Rooms assigned were very small dark and dreary. After making it clear we were unhappy with the proposed accommodations the hotel did upgrade are sleeping arrangements at a cost of approximately 400 USD. The new assigned rooms were much better. However we had six girls placed in one bungalow. It had no AC and it completely flooded during a evening rain storm (2 inches of water everywhere). The hotel staff was not very helpful in helping control; the flooding. Furthermore the girls found a large crab in the toilet (not sure how it got there). This unit also had a funky odor that permeated the air. None of the other rooms had any serious issues. You need to be very specific on what you want or need in a room. If you communicate this clearly you should be fine. The hotel restaurant food is ok, but service is a little slow. Since we are Canadians, many student were happy to find "Poutine" on the menu. The main pool area was fun but could use a few more chairs. The pool seemed clean and well maintained. The beach is beautiful. You can go swimming but not very far. The waves and the current are extremely strong. For many of the students this was their first time seeing the ocean. Many wanted to venture out into the water. This made me a little nervous. The black sand beach gets very hot on the feet. You need to wear shoes at all time. This hotel has a party vibe that can get very loud at night. Depending on were your room is located I would suggest some ear plugs. Showers do not have hot water, I thought this would be an issue but it was not. The shower is refreshing and quite acceptable. I also wish to say that our group guides requested that we lock ourselves in our rooms on our second night. They communicated to us that it felt unsafe. We did have some issues with locals trying to sell cocaine to our students and did witness some fighting. I am still unsure why our local guides were so concerned. However there actions worried some of our students. I would request that the hotel implement some sort of restrictions on who can come onto the property. Bottom line this is an Ok place. for very basic and simple accommodation. Our group did have fun!

Room Tip: Request room above the bar. Just be warned it can be loud. It is in my opinion the nicest room...

Our room was good & comfortable Restaurant food was very good Customer service overall lacking, front reception and restaurant. Breakfast; I ordered fish and I was told I had to order off breakfast menu as I watched others order off lunch and dinner menu and were served. Good workers which were friendly with us; handyman & Brayan. Rude house keepers, almost mad that we wished our room to be cleaned every 4 or 5 days (we never were offered a room clean, always had to ask for it & had to ask for clean towels after 4 days). Front reception, didn't greet us only asked us for money in full, didn't show us our room or where it was, didn't give us a tour or tell us where everything was. No coffee or breakfast included. We thought with our very long stay we would've received at least coffee in included. Pools dirty, cleaned mostly for weekend crowd. Shared pool for room 12 means with dorm, all other rooms and day trippers. Wristbands put on us after 9 days for one night stay, we were staying for 17 days. We checked out one-day early, no problem getting money back for one night. We wouldn't stay again, it wasn't for us. There was a white staff female worker, zero customer service, she always looked away when we walked toward her, never said hello. From the time we checked in to checking out, we never felt welcome at Johnny's.
