Maistra Select Island Hotel Istra offers a mix of experiences, with guests commending its cleanliness and well-maintained amenities, such as the pools and scenic ferry rides. However, opinions on service are varied, noting both friendliness and occasional rudeness. The vibrant atmosphere is marked by loud music and a crowded bar area. While the island location is praised for its tranquility and views, high drink prices and limited food variety have been points of contention, prompting some guests to explore beyond the hotel for better value.

The Maistra Select Island Hotel Istra is on the little island of Sveti St Andrija or Crveti Otok (Red Island) just outside Rovinj. There is an hourly ferry to the mainland, free for hotel guests which made sightseeing reasonably easy although one needed to time one’s plans properly. I used the ferry twice a day as I was there for sightseeing, and the staff were really helpful especially when it was a bit stormy. One day the gangplank literally rose into the air and you had to pick your time to get on it! Luggage is taken from the ferry landing to the hotel on a little van.

The reception area on the mainland provided free, clean toilets and wifi, but the café had limited options and service there could be slow.

The island was very pretty, and it was nice to walk around. It was well set up for sunbathing and swimming in the sea. There are nudists bathing on the attached island of Maskin, over the little causeway, fairly discreet but I felt nervous walking around there on my own. Scary giant seagulls were the main wildlife, but I did see one pheasant; and a lot of speedy lizards on hot days.

Bedroom: very nice. I paid a bit more for a sea view which was well worth it – absolutely gorgeous. Nice little balcony with table and chairs. Unfortunately the door to the balcony did not close properly which was a bit of an issue when there were storms/cold weather. It was a good size, with chairs and a small table as well as the desk/dressing table.

Mattress and pillows were very comfortable, bed linen spotlessly clean, but some nights a warmer duvet would have been very welcome as the AC had a mind of its own and with the gap in the balcony door a couple of nights were shiver inducingly cold. Good amount of storage available, and three power points. I loved the dark wood floor. The minibar fridge was unstocked, but it made a useful fridge for my own drinks.

The bathroom was definitely dated, both in terms of décor (not a big deal), equipment and finish (some cracked tiles or places where things had been removed. Towel rail looked as if it should be heated but wasn’t. Towels supplied were perfectly clean but a bit basic – smallish and quite thin/hard – OK but not really 4 star standard. Bath was awkward to lie down in due to sticky out bits; shower attachment worked well but was a bit fiddly. Nice reliable hot water. Very clean but I don’t think they cleaned the bath fully every day as I noticed drips of body wash undisturbed.
Door opened with a magnetic bracelet, with the previous door card being used for lighting – I liked that as it meant I could leave it on when I was out. One could swim with the bracelet so no concerns about leaving keys on a lounger while in the pool.
There were four outdoor pools (two for children), which looked most inviting on hot days. Unfortunately the steps in were poor designed as they were so steep that I couldn’t get in with a bad knee – might have been OK if the top step was a bit lower and one could immediately launch into the water. That was a disappointment – one would expect at least one easy set of steps.

However, the indoor pool was perfectly acceptable as a substitute and I swam most days. Water a reasonable temperature and easy steps. It was a bit of an odd shape meaning limited options for lap swimming if it was busy, as it was when the weather was not so conducive for outdoor or sea swimming. On one occasion some children were repeatedly jumping in (against the posted rules but as there were no staff on duty it went unchecked.) Also a warmer plunge pool with intermittent jacuzzi features which was quite nice. Towels did not seem to be available there.
Staff were uniformly brilliant – helpful and polite at all times, and kind when I had my panic attack (see below).

Bar area was nice but a bit too small, especially on the evenings there was entertainment – simply impossible to find anywhere to sit then and at some other times. Terrace extension to the bar was lovely when it was warm. I can recommend the ciabatta sandwiches for a light lunch option! Very tasty. One evening they were out of Coke Zero. No issue with prices.

Now for the big negative: the restaurant. Food was buffet style, and the quality, choice and amount were all excellent, although some things were a bit lukewarm. The pizza was always very tasty. Nice to have ice cream as an option too (this was the one thing where a staff member served it), but not the best quality and limited selection of flavours. Drinks were available from self service machines, so no option for branded bar drinks, which was a shame, but the water was good quality.
BUT there were not enough tables and too many customers. It was a nightmarish scrum trying to find a table. One night I actually had a panic attack it was so awful, and twice I just couldn’t bear to go down at all and settled for a sandwich from the bar in my room. That would prevent me from making a return visit. It would have been fine with assigned seating. The issues were not as bad at breakfast. It would have been better if the weather was better and outside seating could be used.

The Istra Island Hotel in Rovinj is a real gem set in the heart of a charming island. The location is simply unique: the hotel is located in the center of the island, surrounded by a crystal clear sea that offers breathtaking views. The rooms are comfortable, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring the surrounding beauty. However, a small improvement could be made in the cleaning of the rooms, and it would be appreciated if the coffee in the room was replenished daily, instead of just once per stay.

The experience on the island is enriched by the possibility of walking to a small nearby island, at the center of which stands a magnificent mausoleum, all immersed in an extraordinary natural setting. The hotel staff is extremely friendly and helpful, and the restaurant cuisine is simply delicious, offering dishes that satisfy even the most discerning palates.

For those who love adventure, the hotel offers the opportunity to explore other islands south of Rovinj by SUP or canoe, a truly unmissable experience for those who want to discover the unspoilt charm of this part of the Adriatic. In conclusion, the Istra Island Hotel is an excellent choice for those seeking a rejuvenating holiday in a natural setting of rare beauty.

We have just returned from yet another excellent holiday at the hotel. We booked with Tui for 11 nights and upgraded as we always do to a sea view overlooking the pools and Maskin on an upper floor.

The room was cleaned every day throughout our stay to a high standard. A welcome pack containing tea, coffee and water together with an electric kettle is a new and very useful addition.

The only real criticism is that the bathroom has a high sided bath which anyone with mobility problems will have problems getting into to access the shower over the bath. Perhaps a small portable step could be added to assist in accessing the bath.

We came into contact with many of the staff in many of the hotel areas and have to say how friendly and helpful they all were. They are a credit to the hotel.

On the only day we had with bad weather the spa was rather busy. Loungers in the spa are few in number and we were dismayed to see some selfish people leave their towels on them while they went for some lunch. Next day however a notice went up to say that this is not permited and we never saw a reoccurrence of this. Swimwear is not permitted in the sauna or steam room but some people ignored this. I would suggest if they are shy just wrap a towel around themselves and respect the custom of the country they are in.

We did not stay near the swimming pools but sunbathed on Maskin. Sunbeds are plentiful around the island and are free to hotel guests. They are 10 euros for non guests and staff carry out checks. We saw some selfish couples take 4 sunbeds, 2 in the sun and 2 in the shade leaving people arriving at the beach to go searching around for sunbeds. I feel the hotel should address this problem.

I found the food to be ok but my wife found it to be a bit bland. There is no charge for beer, wine and soft drinks during evening meal which is a bonus.

Evenings are generally quiet but on occasion entertainment is provided. We found the Captains bar to be rather disapointing compared to previous years. Previously there was a good selection of drinks and there was live entertainment most evenings. This time we found drink options to be limited and we never saw any entertainment there during our stay.

All in all another very relaxing and enjoyable stay and we will definitely return.

Looking at the brochure photographs of this idyllic island Hotel, you could be easily seduced. It is a bit rundown in places however, this can be ignored in favour of the beautiful setting and facilities offered.
The staff is friendly and will offer a smile in return. The Pools are regularly maintained and there is an abundance of sun loungers all over the pool areas and pebble beaches.
The level of cleanliness throughout the hotel lives up to its 4 star rating.
The rooms are of a standard hotel layout and provide adequate storage for your clothes. The wardrobes do not have enough space to hang a full length dress and, as the dress code throughout the hotel is casual, you may wish to leave the 'Formal' clothes at home.
We had a few issues with the room however , these were quickly resolved.

The restaurant could be improved.
The meals area sounds more like the works canteen with too many reflective surfaces to bounce the noise around. Table cloths would greatly improve the noise levels and ambience.
There is a sort of music played over the many speakers which reaches all areas. Quite frankly, it becomes annoying after a time.
The meals are buffet style and varied day to day and cater to all tastes however, I would suggest it is strongly aimed at Non British guests.
The 'Canteen' opens at 6.30p.m. and, as there are no table allocations, there is always a mad rush to obtain the best tables.
Generally the food is of a good standard and along with free wine and beer on tap, is acceptable.
Overall I would recommend this hotel. There are sea views from all rooms to varying degrees. I would recommend going high and take a room facing the other island. Ask to see a layout of the hotel and choose your own room.
The ferry to Rovinj is regular and the town is worth a visit.
I would definitely go back to Croatia. A country worth a visit.

Our 7th visit to the All Suites hotel and another amazing break. This review is for the separate ‘All Suites’ hotel, this is a separate block of rooms away from the main hotel and offers a completely different experience.
The main benefit is the breakfast on the terrace at the ‘castle’, a magical affair with only around 20 tables. Cooked dishes are ordered ‘a la carte’ from friendly and attentive staff. There is a small but changing buffet of fresh pastries, cakes and local meats and cheese. Overlooking the sea towards Rovinj, this is the perfect way to start the day.
Dinner at the same location is another magical experience. Enjoying a cocktail as the sun sets and enjoying delicious food while local musicians play into the dusk is a very special experience, very different to the hustle and bustle of Rovinj. Special thanks to Ivan for looking after our group of 7 so attentively.
Rooms in the All Suites are kept spotlessly clean with daily towel changes and fresh premium toiletries. Rooms have a double and a lounge with a sofa bed. We stayed with our 17yr old daughter who slept in the lounge and it was perfectly comfortable and spacious.
As part of our holiday we also stayed at the 5* Grand Park but all agreed that the exclusive and boutique feel to the Island hotel was more relaxing and better value.
We have (of course) booked again for next year and look forward very much to returning.

We have been to this hotel several times. The complex is very nice, especially the location on the island, with the boat transfer, which is free, everything worked out fine, but......
We were not at all satisfied with the rooms booked, although we had asked for two rooms side by side when Booking Referral. The rooms were not next to each other. The next day we were able to exchange the rooms, these were then also fine, but we had to pay the price of the booked rooms, which we then had to pay from the 2nd. Didn't have day at all. The 2. Room was charged for 2 people, including breakfast and half board, although it was only booked for 1 person.
Compared to the previous stays, the prices were increased immensely. Yes we know everything became more expensive, but not by more than 30%! Not only in the room price, but also drinks etc. became much more expensive.
Our complaint about the price has unfortunately not been addressed.
We have the impression that prices have taken a strong hit this year due to good demand.
We also have to note that the services have decreased significantly, especially at dinner (we had booked HP). The rooms show a backlog of renovations. If this doesn't backfire.....

Large hotel located on the island of St. Andrew, 10 minutes by ferry from Rovinj
It was recommended to us and so we booked for eight people.
Superior room with spectacular views of the sea and the swimming pools.
Restaurant open from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, always well stocked and with excellent food.
Waiters always very careful that everything is in place and clean.
The only flaw that was resolved quickly was only a single coffee machine in the room.
Many deckchairs located both at the seaside and in the pool where there are showers with hot water.
Super efficient and very good at solving any problem is Mr. Teodor in the lobby who also speaks Italian very well.
I would also like to recommend this place

I found this hotel's location to be an ideal place for a contemplative solo holiday – it's just a pity that they have no single rooms, so I had to pay almost double what most other people would have paid. It was also just as well that I wasn't looking for company, as very few Brits there, the majority of people being German, I think.

All the hotel's staff are so hard working, keeping the place very clean, and the tables in the dining rooms cleared, and any problems quickly resolved. The food was nice enough, but I have to say that the dining experience was not that great, with queues for drinks, soups, and main courses causing regular frustration. There were always 2 soups on offer, but one queue. Once at the head of the queue, most people would choose the clear soup, and faff about adding rice, peas, sweetcorn and herbs to their bowls. Everyone would be waiting in line, even if they wanted the thick soup, as they didn't want to be accused of jumping the queue. It would have been better to have clear signage above the soups, and 2 separate queues. At the end of 2 weeks of this, I was glad to get back to my microwave meals for one!

The 2 adjoining islands are very peaceful, and it's easy to find a suitable spot on the rocks or one of the small beaches for sunbathing and swimming. Snorkeling is also pretty good, as quite a few different fish to see. Sometimes the jellyfish were a bit of a nuisance; apparently they can sting but are not harmful. I swam through swarms of them – they are only a few inches in diameter – but never felt any stings.

There is plenty to do during the day – tennis courts, bicycle hire, kayak and paddle board hire, in and outdoor pools, sauna, massage, etc., but evenings were pretty dull. The last evening entertainment was on 4th October. There were also no excursions available from either Tui or the hotel, due to it being end of season.

The hourly boat to Rovinj is great, always on time, and a lovely trip, sometimes with dolphins visible. Rovinj itself is pretty as a postcard, and lots of places to eat and artisan shops to browse. (Be warned though that these too were starting to close around 15th October.) I recommend climbing the bell tower at the Church of St. Euphemia, although not for the faint hearted or those with mobility issues. There are about 190 rickety old wooden steps to negotiate, but well worth it for the great views when you get to the top. Golden Cape Forest Park is also well worth a visit and just a pleasant 15-20 minute walk from where the boat drops you at the Delfin pier. Bikes can be hired in Rovinj if you prefer to cycle to the park. There is a bus station in Rovinj for those wanting to travel further afield, such as Porec or Pula.

Oh, and the weather was great! Had expected at least some rain in October, but nearly every day was sunny and about 22'C – what's not to love?!

We stayed here as a family of four (2 adults and two teenagers) and loved our stay. The island is beautiful and the ground are very well maintained. Lots of choice with water sports and we enjoyed a sunset dolphin tour also.

We booked half board and the buffet at both breakfast and dinner offered a wide selection with various specials of an evening. It was very handy when you couldn’t be bothered to get the boat to Rovinj. We ate in a few of the restaurants for lunch and the food was good and decent sized portions. We also had a drink in one of the bars most nights - the drinks were expensive compared to Rovinj however the Captains Bar had great views especially (don’t forget mosquito spray!).

The pools and beach areas were well maintained and there was never a shortage of sun loungers. There were various aqua fit classes and kids mini discos etc however these were not intrusive if you weren’t joining in.

The staff were all lovely and helpful, especially reception and those on the buffet restaurant reception. The only criticism would be that the rooms, whilst clean and a decent size, and the bathrooms, could do with some modernisation. Glass instead of wall on the balconies would be great also, to enjoy the amazing sea views. I would def recommend this hotel, take a sea view room and Rovinj itself is stunning.

We'd never visited Croatia before, but we were overwhelmed by this holiday.
The hotel is in a stunning location, and perfect for a get away from it all holiday. Bathrooms are a little dated but don't let that put you off, everything is spotless clean. You'll be spoilt for choice at the buffet - even the fussiest of eaters will find something they like.
Tips: Don't take a kettle (as per previous reviews) they are provided in the room along with tea / coffee etc. Take water shoes, the pebbles are difficult to walk on getting in and out the sea, but worth it! Visit the SPA, its amazing, and has a quiet sunbathing area with plunge pool. If you eat in the castle (La Serra) ask for the 'Dine Around' menu, its 40 euros for 3 courses (excluding drinks) if you're half board in the hotel. Take beach towels if you can, otherwise they charge 4 euros after the first one. Visit Basilico - the pizza restaurant (not included in half board) the food is excellent. Take a hairdryer if you like to do your hair, theirs are like something out of the 1960's!! Take the free ferry and explore Rovinj - its beautiful. If you're out late get the ferry from the Maestral point (coach drop off on first day) as it gets very busy at night. There's also an amazing steak restaurant underneath the Grand Park hotel in Rovinj with a DJ and dancing. Take sun cream because the choice is limited on the Island. The staff are so helpful and friendly too. If you need a supermarket go to Konzum, around the corner from Hotel Adriatic in Rovinj. We can also recommend Copacabana for food in Rovinj too.

Yes, kettle in room and large bottles of lovely body wash/shampoo in the bathroom. There are also hairdryers in the bathroom (old fashioned wall mounted but effective 😁) Small fridge in room too.

I got the earlier 6am boat so I could see sunrise and nip in to Tommy supermarket at 7. There are seats and open toilets from 6am at the port so you can sit and wait for the coach transfer, which is usually 715am. You are fine to get the 7am boat and get straight off it on to the coach, I just preferred the extra time.
