Palace (WangFu) Hotel of Lijiang was built on the ancient site of the Mu family's guest house from 800 years ago. It is a heritage hotel of the ancient city, facing the South Gate Square with three streams of water from the snow mountain as a peninsula. It compasses three chambers sharing a screen wall facing the gates, four corner yards surrounding a center big. The hotel is embellished with blossoms and plants, constructions with old-world charm, arbors and waterside pavilions. Wandering through the rectangular corridors, you will be carried away by the tranquil atmosphere, which sends you into another life. Lijiang Palace (Wangfu) Hotel is the best place to start discovering the true Lijiang history and Naxi lifestyle.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a whistlestop tour of Yunnan, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The hotel is situated towards the Southern edge of the Old Town, and has its own shuttle buggy to take you and your belongings to a convenient drop-off point where you can board your tour vehicle (a car in our case). It is around 10 minutes from the the Market Square, though the teeming crowds that emerge at night could make this a longer walk! But if it is restaurants you require then there are plenty within a stone's throw of the hotel - and the hotel's restaurant also offers excellent food.

On arrival we were welcomed with ginger tea - refreshing, tasty and apparently of benefit in countering possible altitude problems (Lijiang is at 2,400 metres above sea level). We were then shown to our room. This was reasonably spacious and had all the facilities we needed. The bed, as usual in China, was decidedly on the firm side, but comfortable enough. We had none of the plumbing issues reported by another traveller (fortunately).

We had lunch at the hotel - an excellent selection, very tasty - before setting off to explore the town. The hotel's bar also serves as tea/coffee shop. While it was a very pleasant place to sit and chat, it must be said that the tea and coffee were unnervingly expensive. We needed the caffeine burst from the coffee, but it may have been gentler on the pocket to have had beer.

Breakfast buffet was comprehensive and tasty.

We found the staff to be friendly, helpful and polite and the hotel itself was charming and relaxing. Indeed, so charming is it that it is often used as a backdrop for local photographers. Almost every time we entered or left the hotel, someone (a model?) was being photographed by its bridges and pools.

A lovely place to stay.

This hotel is located in the the center of the old town of Lijiang - no access by car/bus/coach. However electric vehicle available for passenger and luggage.
Poor English speaking staff capabilities - as in most Chinese upcountry hotels
Limited selection for breakfast as usual in Chinese upcountry hotels - we missed selection of fruits most :-(
very good bathroom with best shower equipment and very clear water!

Just returned from a holiday in Yunnan Province and stayed at this hotel in Lijiang. It is located in the old city near the South gate. It is beautifully presented, furniture and decor is immaculate. Staff were very friendly and helpful and a few spoke english well. It is in a great location, quiet but with heaps of small shops to buy things, and good eating places. You can walk all around the old town from here, and also out to the new city areas. They will help arrange tours and transport from the hotel also. We stayed 2 nights initially and then returned for 1 night after completing the Tiger Leaping Gorge walk. The hotel held our luggage for us while we were away.

We stayed two nights in Lijiang, as part of our 9 day Yunnan holiday.

The old town of Lijiang offers a multitude of hotel options. Let me be more specific, it’s more like Chinese style inns (also known as boutique hotels). These accommodations offer us insights into what life was like in the old days, living in Chinese style buildings. And you get to stroll the old town as well.

Wang Fu hotel is one of the bigger hotels. It’s a beautifully restored complex of buildings, with well apportioned rooms that are nicely done up with modern amenities. Breakfast at the hotel is decent - Chinese food on level 2. Skip the restaurant in the hotel premise, if you need to have a meal (expensive and food does not impressive) - there are a multitude of cafes and restaurants in the old town (reasonable price and food is clean).

See photos of Wang Fu Hotel & Lijiang Old Town. Recommended!

Response from 王府饭店2016, 销售总监 at Palace Hotel (Wang Fu Hotel)
Responded 6 June 2018
Dear friend, Hello, thank you very much for staying at the Palace Hotel. We are located in the South Gate Square of Old Town of Lijiang. It is convenient for you to get off to the hotel. It only takes 5 minutes to get out of the hotel. There are many yards for guests to rest. The LES PFTITES ECURIES on the first floor is a creative restaurant in Yunnan. It is also provided for guests at 14:00-16:00 p.m. every afternoon. Free afternoon tea. We look forward to your staying with your family and friends again.

This hotel is on the south side of the old town and an easy 20 minute walk to the main square, although the crowds can be immense in the evenings. We often saw people (wedding couples) having their photos taken outside the hotel which is very picturesque.
The room was large but the carpet was not so clean.
The breakfast was really awful. There was not much room in the restaurant. There was no orange juice on 2 of the 3 days we were there. There were no bananas or yoghurt or cereals so we ended up eating only toast. The coffee was really bad and undrinkable.
The staff were mostly friendly but few seemed to speak English. When we were there we suffered from upset stomachs and the reception staff made us some ginger tea which was a very nice gesture.

We were a family with 2 kids, and stayed 4 nights at the "family suite." The suite was very roomy with 2 floors and 2 bedrooms. Unfortunately, that's the only positive comment I have for this place. Our room had numerous problems, including a toilet that broke down multiple times (would not flush, or water would constantly run), shower drain that was clogged, problem with the front door lock, air conditioner with the condensation tube hanging freely and dripping water on the floor.

The hotel staff were polite but many had inadequate training. Also beware of the staff at the travel desk. We were duped into paying about 700 yuan per person for a trip to Shangri-la. We knew that other hotels were offering the trip for much less, but we decided to pay more because the hotel promised that our trip would be higher quality and service. When we got on the tour bus, we found that everyone else paid about 380 yuan. The tour guide on the bus made mandatory shopping stops, and ordered everyone to buy something at these stops. When a customer refused to get off the bus to shop, the tour guide would harass incessantly and become rude to the customer.

Lastly, the location of the hotel, at the "south gate of old town," is rather far from the heart of old town, where all the action is. The south gate is rather dead in that there's not much to do. It is much better to stay at a hotel or inn at the north end of old town or the mid part (eg, Sifang square area).

For the last 2 days of our vacation in Lijiang, we stayed at a small inn inside the old town called San He hotel, which was a much better experience.

Room was fine, has internal yards with children space, superb location at the heart of the old quarter of Lijiang, Naxi tribe style. Must stroll at night, everything iluminated, shops, restaurants with show. Not to be missed the parallel alley where the water channel runs. Restaurants, hotels, millions of flowers and illuminated hidden points.
An absolute gem. Two stories hotel. No elevator. If you struggle with stairs, ask for the entrance floor, no stairs at all.

This is a more traditional Chinese Hotel located in the “Old Town” part of Lijiang. If you want to experience living in the Chinese environment you have to stay here. The hotel is more than adequate though the rooms are a bit dated. The hotel Courtyards are a wonderful area to relax and coffee/tea is provided after 11.00 AM. Many in our Group wanted to stay longer but as things go we had to move on. The Breakfasts were adequate, but don’t hesitate to ask if something has run out, the staff are more than willing to help if asked. As with everything in China some patience and a polite smile will get you what you want. Maybe those who criticize the breakfast in the past can learn some humility (only hot milk and white bread, you are in a remote part of China not downtown some western metropolis). Though more down market than some of the bigger city hotels would recommend this hotel just for the cultural experience alone.

This hotel has a good location on the edge of the old town but otherwise our stay there was not a positive experience. There is a large construction project happening in the lobby/restaurant downstairs. Our room was very tired - the wallpaper was split down one corner and the carpet was very stained. There were 2 long black hairs on the bathroom floor and the service done the second day was very sketchy. Our room looked across just a few feet into the windows of other rooms. The real problem though was the disco or whatever was the source of the very loud pop music both nights we were there. The first evening it went until about 2200 hours but the second night it went on until midnight. There are many charming looking guesthouses in the old town that would be a much better choice

At mentioned in other reviews, this hotel is near the south entrance of the old city. When we arrived in our car we were met at the city entrance by a golf buggy and transported the 200m to the hotel from the gate. Ordinary cars are parked outside the city across the road from the entrance. The hotel is very picturesque with its fountain, fish pond and stone bridge. Again, as mentioned in other reviews, the hotel is used as a backdrop for lots of model shots or wedding photos.
The rooms are a bit small although adequate. A couple of light bulbs were also blown and these were replaced immediately after I brought it to their attention. As per normal in China, the beds are hard and the lighting poor (even after replacing the light bulbs). The room had internet connected but no safe. When we enquired at the front desk for a safe deposit facility, they went away and returned with a room safe which was installed in the room while we waited.
The bathroom is small. English is not a strong point of staff at the hotel although some have a few words of English.
Breakfast was fairly adequate, and a lot better that some of the hotels in Yunnan Province. If one waited until the tour groups cleared out (after helping themselves to extra food from the buffet to have for lunch), one had a better choice.
Within a stone's throw of the hotel, there are numerous restaurants. Some are good and some are quite rip-off merchants. The better ones are further along.
If visiting Lijiang again, we would stay at this hotel.
