Lijiang is absolutely lovely - a charming, cobblestoned maze of alleys and canals that are delightful to get lost in : ) The small Zen Garden Guest House/Hotel is nestled in quaint and quiet residential area in the heart of the old-town (just a 2-minute walk away from the busier touristy alleys). The ownder speaks English and is delightful - there are less than a dozen rooms, all clean, bright, and beautifully decorated. The small lobby and tea room are incredibly beautiful. I loved my stay here....Beware,,,there are TWO Lijiang's in China...this one is in the Yunnan Province, air flights via Kunming.

In the turistically busy city of lijiang, packed with local turist and shops, this little oasis is a lovely place of rest and armony.
The hotel owner speaks english very well and is always ready for a friendly conversation about habits and history of China. The view is great and the lobby furniture is carerfully selected.
Best hotel during our one month stay in China. we strongly reccomend it.

My daughter and I spent a total of 6 nights at the Zen Garden in June 2007... four nights followed by a hiking trip and sightseeing elsewhere and then two additional nights at the Zen Garden. They kept our extra bags while we were away.
We had arrived in Lijaing without a hotel reservation and found the Zen Garden by chance while wandering around. We had looked at 5 or 6 other guesthouses and I knew the minute I walked in that it was the place to stay.
The location is on a quiet side street (no cars) in the old town of Lijaing. The hotel is arranged around a lovely courtyard with a goldfish pond. A small reception area has some tables for eating breakfast and a couple of computer stations for internet access. The guestrooms are simple and clean with nice private baths and good quality bedding.
The staff don't really speak a great deal of English but they try to be helpful. If you ask for directions, often they will just lead you on foot to where you want to go as the streets in the old town are very winding and not well-marked.
There is always plenty of hot green tea. A previous poster complained about the breakfast. It was simple but adequate...Chinese don't eat breakfast like Westerners. There are many places nearby to get a good omelette for breakfast for $2 or 3, or you can get some potatoes or bread from a street vendor for even less.
I would go back to the Zen Garden in a heart beat, especially considering that it cost about $50 per night, high by Lijaing old town standards but very little compared to a luxury hotel in Shanghai or Beijing. Lijaing is a real Chinese tourist destination. Westerners probably made up only about 5% of the tourists when we were there and of the Westerners, most were European or Australians or New Zealanders. Many of the Naxi style guesthouses don't have English signs or English speaking staff. On the other hand, the larger tourist hotels looked very bland and impersonal and are not located in the heart of the old city. The Zen Garden seemed an ideal choice for Westerners as well as Asian guests.
We split up our stay with a three day hike in the mountains of Tiger Leaping Gorge and an overnight in Zhongdian. Magitou Travel (Lijaing) guide Johnson was wonderful. Wish we had an additional 6 or 7 days to explore more countryside around Lijaing. Distances are great and many destinations are 6 or 7 hours by hired car and more by bus. We rented bikes for two days of exploring just outside the city and that was strenuous but fun.

We stayed at the Zen Garden Hotel for 2 nights & we loved it !!!
Charming place with styl, greatly located 20 meters away from the old town but very peacfull !! Rooms are nice not very big but OK considering what is available here unless you want to stay at the Banyan Tree outside of town.
Boiling shower a luxe in China, Chinese TV cable would be nice. Free wifi in the lobby. Great staff, not fluent in English but WILLING to HELP and service minded. Breakfast could be better but for 400 yuan net a night all included.

This is a fantastic place to stay! The hotel is located on a quiet road just off the main tourist streets in Lijiang. The staff were really helpful and arranged a taxi pick-up for us from the airport and also arranged for a private taxi to take us to Tiger Leaping Gorge and then on to Shang-ri-la which was our next destination. The pick-up from the airport is a really good idea as I can imagine finding the hotel in the small roads of Lijiang being very hard without a local to follow (it also means you have someone to carry your bags!). To arrange the taxi we just rang the hotel number and, since the owner speaks very good English, it was simple.
The rooms are on the small side but have lovely furniture and good bathrooms. The main attraction of the hotel is its lovely mutlilevel courtyard (Zen Garden) with coy carp pool and it is a very peacful place to have breakfast or an afternoon cup of jasmine tea. Also on some mornings, during breakfast, there is a local Naxi musician playing in the courtyard for the guests which is a beautiful way to be woken up!
We had the room on the ground level opposite the reception and the breakfast room. I would say that this room would have a chance of being disturbed by people talking outside but the owners seem to be very aware of this now given the earlier review and we were not disturbed at all. There were even concerned as to whether we had been disturbed during an afternoon nap never mind during the night! To be sure of a quiet room though, I would ask for one on the first or second floor, but since the hotel is often full this may not be possible.
Don't hesitate to book this hotel, it is a beautiful place to relax for a few days whilst exploring the old town of Lijiang!

I stayed for two nights in the Zen Garden Inn (Wuyi Yard location) in November 2014. As with most hotels in Dayan Town (old town), it can be a little hard to find at first- it's down a side-street a little ways from the main square. This turns out to be an advantage, because it helps keep the hotel quieter. (Some of the central areas of the old town have music bars at get loud in the evenings.) It's very convenient to walk from this hotel to numerous shops and restaurants. I visited Wangu Tower, the Mu Palace, and Black Dragon Pool Park all on the same walk from this centrally-located hotel.
I think this hotel's most important, distinguishing feature is the great efforts taken by the staff to be welcoming and helpful. They offer hot tea when you check in and when you return from a day of sightseeing. More impressively, the hotel was able to arrange a round-trip bus ride for me to see Tiger Leaping Gorge, which is a 2.5-hour drive north of the hotel. A staff member escorted me to the roadway (cars and buses can't enter Old Town) and ensured that I got on the correct bus. They also packed a breakfast for me to take on the bus. When I was ready to depart Lijiang, the hotel arranged a taxi to the airport and a small motorized cart to carry my bags to the street.
The room was nice but small, and the bed was comfortable. Everything was clean. One unusual thing is that the room did not contain any desk or chairs (probably necessary due to the small size), so if you want to sit and read, you'll have to sit on the bed.
In mid-November, it got quite cold at night, there is no central heating, and the rooms are not well-insulated. There was a portable heater and humidifier in the room, which I had to ask the staff how to operate, since it was non-intuitive and all the controls were labeled in Chinese. The portable heater was extremely helpful but not entirely sufficient for warming the whole room- you'll still need to get under the heavy covers while sleeping, and wear a sweater while awake, at night. Temperature-wise, I was narrowly okay at this hotel in mid-November, but I'd be truly worried about the cold in December or January. For what it's worth, all the buildings in the Old Town are old-fashioned, so it might be hard to find any hotel in this area that has modern insulation and HVAC. If I came to visit Lijiang in December or January, I would choose a modern hotel near Old Town rather than a historical hotel inside Old Town, simply to ensure I had central heating and proper insulation.
At any other time of the year, I'd recommend the Zen Garden Inn. Its good location and extremely helpful staff are hard to beat.

We spent 3 nights in the room, second floor center, with the best view sacrificing roominess. We moved to another room for our final night due to booking obligations and I left my silk sports coat in the closet as we drove off to Dali, a 4 hour drive. After discovering the loss at our hotel in Dali, a phone call was made to ask how to best have the coat returned.
The hotel staff had the coat sent by taxi to our hotel in Dali at NO COST.
How can you beat that?

i was travelling alone and decided to stay about 10 days in lijiang, using it as my base as i travel around the surrounding areas. i booked into this hotel as they have a website for me to have a rough idea of what it looks like and it looks safe for a lone traveller like me. In addition, a fellow traveller who has posted his review on this site before had also recommended it.
i was not disappointed - the hotel is very central to the old town and yet is situated at the end of a small lane, away from the maddening crowd of tourists. it also has a very nice and tranquil small garden and houses only about 16 rooms.
for 400RMB a night, i suppose it is more expensive than the other inns in the old town, but i still feel that it is worth my money. it comes with breakfast and free internet access on 2 computers in the lobby. if you bring your own laptop, there is free internet access as well in the room.
i will highly recommend this hotel to other travellers. the hotel can also arrange a trusted taxi driver who happens to be the owner's friend to take you around. i went for a day trip to the jade dragon snow mountain, baisha village, su he old town and black dragon pool in the private taxi for only 160 rmb.

We are just back from Lijiang. Stayed at Zen Garden for 3 nights. We loved the room cos it was quiet, clean with modern toilet/shower facilities & had a PC connected with broadband (included in room charge!). The staff were polite & friendly.
The only regret was the miserable breakfast. No variety, everyday was stale bread, hardboiled egg, milk, over-ripe bananas & cold & Naxi bread that even the owner refused to eat (I saw her buying freshly made ones from outside!).

I rated this hotel above average because the room was too small for a third bed. The room was not spacious for two beds but good enough considering the price.
The staff were extremely polite and helpful. Service is great! Our room was very clean.
The place is beautiful, and located in the old town of Lijiang. If I go back to Lijiang I will certainly stay at this hotel again!

I have not had to pay a fee when I stayed in the "old town". Just tell them where you are staying.
The rooms we had were for two persons per room - either two single beds or one large double bed.
