A bivouac is about simplicity. The Bivou is our version of the bivouac for today’s discerning travelers. It is a bed-and-breakfast built around the notion that modern adventurers have modern needs: comfort, sustainability, authenticity and style. We are uniquely located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lijiang, just a minute away from the historic village square of ancient Shuhe. Our vision is simple…We are Designed for Adventure

Fantastic tours organised by the hotel of Leaping Tiger Gorge & Snow Dragon Mountain, led by a wonderful guide, Gama, highly recommended. Lovely breakfast each morning served with a smile. Hotel location is ideal in the middle of Shuhe. We also dined there in the evening, again delicious, nice wine choice available: Amazing stay for us as tourists from Ireland. Thankyou for the wonderful memories.

Dear Loughlin R, First of all, thank you for taking the trouble to write us a review and most importantly, staying at The Bivou and giving us a chance to host you and to help you create wonderful memories! We are thrilled that you have enjoyed the tours and itineraries we helped to curate to two classic and popular destinations, the amazing Tiger Leaping Gorge and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. We understand that although the tours can be found through other channels, the fact that we work with well-qualified and knowledgeable local guides who have partnered with The Bivou for so many years and share our values of authenticity and warm and caring service makes a big difference. We are also glad to know that you had a chance to try the food and wine, including some Bivou-exclusives at our cafe. We hope you will make time to visit us again in the future!

Our family returned to Yunnan for the fourth straight year. We love either starting or ending at The Bivou. As always, we received a warm and friendly welcome and enjoyed the chilled atmosphere - especially the view of the garden and the easy access to ShuHe and beyond. We love the emphasis on locally produced food and wine. I am vegetarian and there are a range of options. Our teenage daughters enjoy being able to go out and explore. The room are clean and comfortable.

Dear David and family, It is always a great delight and honour when we have returning customers, especially those like yourselves who have returned so many times. Thank you so much for trusting us once again to take care of your precious holiday time with your family! It is true, after a while, we do see you as family and friends, and sitting down for a chat and exchanging stories and ideas become second nature and so much fun! We are always grateful for the connections that our guests and friends share with us, such as the amazing Elevated Honey that is made in Shangri-La by Katie which you shared with us which we are looking forward to introducing into our list of great local companies and people to support. None of what we do would be possible if not for the guests who share our values and support our aspirations, whether it is for taking care of the local communities in which we are based, in terms of local products, the people, and the fragile environment ; to bringing up the standard of service and quality of hospitality that we know can be achieved even in a small remote part of China such as Lijiang. We are looking forward to your next visit and we hope to see you soon! Take care!

Dear Mary D, We are so glad that you had a wonderful stay at our hotel! Thank you very much for giving us a chance, out of the thousands of hotels that are available around us, to serve you and to take care of your holiday needs. May is indeed a wonderful gem! We are grateful to have her with us, and just like the rest of the team, she really loves the interaction with people not only from China but also from the rest of the world. The friendly locals such as May (who is Naxi) was why The Bivou decided to make Lijiang our home 14 years ago, and we are glad that we are still here today, providing that important respectful link between the friendly local community and those who come to visit from near and far, to learn about their cultures, food and stories. We hope you will come back again next time! See you soon!

It’s our third time coming to Lijiang - this time with family visiting us in China from abroad. We came to Bivou Cafe before but it’s the first time we stayed with them for couple of nights. The staff is really trying to offer the best service even if with limited English - special thanks goes to May who was very welcoming. The guesthouse is situated quite close to the northern entrance of Shuhe Old town. It’s less commercialised than the main Old Town, but for more authentic Old Town experience suggest traveling to Baisha Old Town which is 15 min car ride from Bivou on the way to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area. The rooms are well designed, hot water shower working great and the window isolation is good - we visited in December so it was crucial. Bivou offers great western breakfast and you can always have lunch or dinner here if you are not keen on local food. My favourite part is also the Bivou garden - the salad comes directly from their own field! Thanks Bivou for our lovely stay! Hope the international travel will pick up shortly!

Dear Friend of The Bivou :) Thank you so much for coming to visit us so many times in the past! We are glad that you have finally managed to stay with us, to experience The Bivou beyond the Bivou Cafe, which is also a Farm-to-Table venture we are proud to have, hopefully encapsulating the Bivou core values of Design, Sustainability and Authenticity. We are glad that you mentioned about the design of our guest room. When we first conceived of The Bivou, we wanted it to be the “Perfect Base” from which discerning travelers can venture out to all the fun and exciting places around. This is why we have chosen to invest in good quality hardware, as much as we can, to ensure guests are able to truly rest and rejuvenate after a day of adventure, even if we are housed within century-old structures. As for the often-mentioned Bivou breakfast, we are delighted to share that even though the cuisine offered is familiar, especially for Western guests, 95% of what is offered, such as the fruit jams, cereal, cakes, kefir and granola are made in-house, using seasonal locally-sourced ingredients, hopefully cutting down on the inevitable environmental impact of imported ingredients. Lastly, thank you for the well-wishes! Yes, we do hope we will soon be able to reach out to even more travelers from near and far, who like us love Lijiang and Yunnan, and enjoy seeing the most authentic and beautiful part of it!

Cited on the western edge of Szu‘s beautiful old town, the Bivou is in a delightfully, six neutered spot overlooking communal vegetable growing areas by the river. It was created about 10 years ago by two people, one of whom is an architect, and the design excellence is evident: it’s a gorgeous place, with many thoughtful and classy touches in the common areas and the bedrooms. The staff are very friendly and incredibly helpful, the food is great, the range of cocktails and wines is excellent and the whole experience is wonderful. Thoroughly recommended.

As soon as you step into this boutique hotel in the heart of Lijiang Shuhe Ancient Town, it feels like you’re home with friends. The staff are so welcoming, friendly, and helpful—we chatted about local attractions, culture, and hiking recommendations! The lobby, restaurant, and garden add to a beautiful, magical, outdoor ambience. The rooms are beautifully and thoughtfully decorated and include amazing handmade soap and lip balm! The food was incredible, and we particularly enjoyed the rice noodles and farm fresh breakfast. The gardens and grounds are spectacular. The owner came and talked with us about her experiences in Yunnan and tips for our visit. My father and I immediately knew we’d need to come back with the rest of the family! So grateful to our friend that recommended the Bivou to us and the wonderful, wonderful staff. The extra time and care that has been put into staff well-being is incredible and brings so much to the overall experience!

Location is great since it is in the middle of Shuhe Old Town. The family room we stayed at is cosy with lots of amenities like heaters and thoughtfully prepared toiletries. The cafe has good ambience and great food. They even have their own home grown veggies. What made the stay even more memorable is the staff (Hwee Ling who runs the place with such dedication, May, Martin, Nuomi, Na Na, Xiao Bi, Auntie who helped with luggages (sorry forgot to ask for your name!), and others whom we didn't get to meet. Thank you for your care and warmth which made the place like home during our stay, suggesting where to eat and curating a great itinerary for us. And getting such a sincere and trustworthy guide Nongbu and driver Mu Shifu who took such great care of us! Not forgetting talkative resident cat Tatami! Thank you!

We had a great experience at the Bivou recently, the warmth and attention of the staff were amazing. They food was very good and the atmosphere of the dining room warm and inviting. The staff was very helpful arranging visits to nearby tourist sites and offered "insider tips" for sightseeing. The whole team was wonderful from the owner to the chef, special mention to Martin and Nana. Thank you Bivou for a great visit!!

Worth staying for either a week-two week “local base” or casual stay. Staying one or two nights doesn’t do your stay in Lijiang justice, especially at an establishment this exceptional. The Bivou ordered up an excellent excursion to the drive and hikes in the UNESCO site Tiger Leaping Gorge. Their recommended guide was not just good - he was memorable. We learned from him a wealth of knowledge about the local Naxi people and culture. The food and service here at Bivou are equally wonderful.

I can not say enough good things about the Bivou! The friendly service and quality of the hotel leaves you wanting to come back again and a again. So we did. This is our second time staying at the Bivou and this experience was even bettter than the first. This time was winter and their heated floors and comfortable beds lead to the best sleep. The food from breakfast to dinner is delicious (see pictures). The environment surrounding the Bivou is peaceful, but also an easy walk to the center of Shuhe town. I know we will be back again.
