This is what we were paying attention to when we unpacked our bags in this establishment after 3.5 hours of climbing and a few thousand steps on our legs.
Rest assured, whether you arrive on foot or by cable car, the hotel is very well signposted. You will still have to climb a few steps to reach it. Please note: the hotel is superbly located for watching the sunrise, for starting your hikes and surrounded by places to eat/refuel.
The arrival was superb: fast and extremely kind. The staff was extremely friendly towards us and then we had the nice surprise of being upgraded.
The room is very decent: the bedding is very suitable, very well equipped for a hotel that is difficult to access, the mosquito nets are effective, down jackets are even provided for watching the sunrise when it is cold. Special mention to the Japanese toilets which were a great discovery.
However, we feel that the room is not very new as indicated by certain traces and dirt. Also, a smell of mold bothered us (this was not the case in the first room, however).
As for breakfast, this is unfortunately for us the biggest weak point of the hotel: no sweets, little choice of drinks, and for the rest it is just passable.
Without the kindness and immense goodwill of the staff, we would undoubtedly have given it a 3/5 but we would like to emphasize this point which will brighten up your stay and make you forget the few small faults.
On the downside, it is incredibly expensive for what you get, the rooms are quite pokey, and the food options are very limited and just average. It is also a shame that they allow smoking inside some parts of the hotel.
After walking into our room, we asked for a room change. The bathroom was really dirty and toothpicks and papers were on the carpet in the room. The second room was cleaner, but the bathroom could benefit from some heavy duty cleaning. We appreciated the plastic slippers that were supplied which we wore when we showered.
For dinner, you order from a menu. This was better for us than the buffet at the Beihai Hotel the previous night. The food was adequate and plentiful and a bit better here than at the Beihai.
Environment: The hotel is very close to the bright top and can watch sunrise and sunset. You can watch the stars at night.
Service: The service is very attentive, with dedicated staff to introduce Huangshan's play route. Orange juice and scones were delivered in the evening.
Make the most of your stay here by climbing Turtle Peak for the sunset and Bright Peak for the sunrise. We were extremely well looked after by Xiao Ye who reminded us of times to wake up and helped us plan our route down. The rooms are simple and comfortable. The food is reasonably priced especially since it’s all carried up by foot. Will visit again!
Xihai Hotel offers much better comfort for RMB 940 for a twin room (North Building) and feels newer. We stayed at Xihai Hotel for 2 nights.
For seeing sunrise, 光明顶山庄 (GuangMingDing Mountain Villa) is much nearer to 光明顶 (Bright Top Summit) compared to Baiyun Hotel. From Baiyun Hotel, it took me 15 min to hike up to Bright Top Summit to the place for seeing sunrise. It is uphill steps all the way. In comparison, 光明顶山庄 (GuangMingDing Mountain Villa) is next to the weather observatory station on Bright Top Summit. No hiking is needed to see sunrise if you stay at 光明顶山庄 (GuangMingDing Mountain Villa) - just step out of your hotel to see sunrise.
At arrival we asked to pay the price of 1080 yuan, we told we already pay 300 and were handed a phone to confirm with the administration office. I also had the payment confirmation saved on my phone just in case but wasn't needed.
After reading reviews online about the hotels at the to of the mountain I became quite worried about the value. Maybe because I was so worried it turned out not bad at all, it was a great great trip, the best trip ever in China. However I have been living in China for a while and do take habits and manners into consideration. So for visitors who's first time it is to China, just be prepared. I have a few points I want to mention so I will do it one by one:
- Location: The location is definitely the best part of the hotel, it is very well located in between the brightness peak, lotus peak and fairy walking bridge. We loved it! All within less then an hour walk. It took us only 3.5 hours hiking from The cloud temple (eastern train) to our hotel. Also the cable car down (to save your knees) on the eastern side is only 30 to 45 min walk.
- Staff: As metioned, we have been living in China for a while and after reading the reviews online we were prepared for the worst. Perhaps being prepared on the worst made it all seem not that bad at all or maybe it just was pretty good. The staff is like any other typical Chinese staff; a bit shy, not too helpful and not friendly looking. However if you don't expect to much of them, nothing goes wrong. Actually a few of the female staff member spoke English quite well and were nicer then the male receptionist. Also we asked for a double bed but were assigned 2 single beds. After a call with the front desk a lady came up to push the beds together and explained there were no rooms left.
- Room: It was good! We went there during quite a hot period, around 25 degrees or more. There is no AC, but with the windows open it was okay. The room looks nice, however the floor did not look to clean so we were happy to wear the disposable slippers that were provided. There are also plastic slippers for in the bathroom and large and small towels.
- Trail: As mentioned in the beginning, we walked all the way from the Cloud temple up to our temple in about 3.5 hours. After arriving at our hotel, which felt amazing after climbing all the way we decided to stay in for a while. Then it started to get cloudy and we just stayed in. The next day we woke up at 4.45 to see the sunset at the brightness
peak. I recommended to arrive at least 30 min. minutes before the actual sunset as you will be sharing it with 100 others and you want to be sure of having a good spot! Also we had to run up the stairs because it was quickly getting lighter and I can tell you this is a lot harder after just waking up.
This day we decided to take it easy and went to the lotus peak and the fairy walking bridge before going back down with the cable car.
Over all, we loved the mountain and the views. It was truly amazing! Also not to many people there during Friday, Saturday was a little bit more crowded but we went down early so did not notice it that much. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go.
Sorry if my review is not that clear, I just have to many things I wanted to put in here. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.
Your room won't be in the actual hotel building, you'll have to hike (really exhausting flights of stairs) to your room that is in another shabby building. The building is cold and dark. The rooms are dirty, old and smelly. We had to change rooms (with no help from the unfriendly concierge) because our rooms stank of mild dew. The mattress felt like stone, the carpets were dirty, I didn't want step without shoes in the bathroom and non of us could take showers because there was no hot water. This was not just the case with us four friends, but also with other tourists that were with us in the hotel. Nobody was happy with the terrible quality they paid for.
The only thing that we liked was the restaurant in the main building - even though it was ridiculously expensive but by then we got used to this sucking our wallets dry - and the warm jackets that were supplied in the closet for the sunrise.
If you want to see the sunrise I would suggest hiking up to Turtle Peak. You won't be alone there, but you'll also not be smothered by the other ten thousand Chinese tourists . Take care, it is rather exhausting to hike up to Turtle peak but it is worth the sunrise view. You can ask at the front desk how to get to Turtle peak, it shouldn't take you more than 20 minutes once you turn right from the main hotel building and pass the restaurant on your left.
It gets really cold in the evening and mornings - so use the jacket they provide in the rooms. We were surprised at the good quality of the jackets and it came in handy seeing as we didn't want to drag up our winter jackets with the hike up to the hotel.
It took us 3 hours to hike to and from the hotel from the cable cars. On the map the hotel is situated at the Western steps, but they are closed indefinitely due to renovation so you'll have to HIKE to the Taiping or Yungu cable cars that are very far from the hotel. I say "HIKE" because it's not just a walk to somewhere, it's really an exhausting trek to a location.
I'm giving you all of this advice, but to be really honest and frank with you - DON'T BOOK A ROOM WITH THE BAIYUN HOTEL HUANGSHAN that is at the Tianhai Scenic Area on top of the mountain. It is TOO expensive for the POOR quality that they offer. I understand that you have to stay on top of the mountain to see the sunrise but if you are willing to empty your wallet for that experience, then pay the extra 100 or 200 Yuan and stay at another hotel. It's been a couple of days since we stayed at the hotel and we're still bitter about it!!! There was absolutely NO VALUE for our money. At some times not even the sunrise view made that money worth it, because the hotel was just disappointing and a scam. I would not give them 4 stars - I would shut them down.
If you absolutely must stay at Baiyun hotel, then don't camp outside because it'll get really cold and wet and demand a room in the main hotel building. And also, only stay one night. You can pay more than half the price for a gorgeous hotel at the foot of the mountain called Tang Kou Hotel. Now that was a pleasant stay.
"After climbing stairs for 5 hours, more stairs. Room is a fair size. Your sleeping here not buying the place."Read full review
