I stayed solo at Alto Atacama about 4 weeks into a 6 week trip through Chile and Argentina. This was the more luxe part of my trip and it showed through every detail at the resort. I enjoyed selecting my excursions and that there was a variety to choose from, although I wish I knew ahead of time about some of the more intense hikes that I would have wanted to do, and might have spent an extra day or two to adjust to the altitude to do those. The Atacama Desert is truly beautiful, I had not done a lot of research about the area and it absolutely exceeded all my expectations. Alto Atacama was an ideal place to rest, relax, recharge when not out and about. It is truly an oasis in the desert and you can really disconnect and just enjoy the surroundings. During my stay there were families with younger (8+) children, couples, more senior couples and while I was solo, I was invited by multiple families to join them for meals :) Since most people are there 4+ days, you see the same people on your excursions and by the end of your stay you have a whole new group of friends! I'm actually hoping to go back and spend a week so I can hike some of the higher elevation full day mountains! It is a beautiful land

This hotel is located in a fertile oasis in the Atacama desert around 3km from San Pedro de Atacama. The site itself is amazing with a cactus garden outside our bedroom, a llama park just beyond, Andean vegetable gardens, shady seats, calming Algorrobo trees and scented Rica-Rica bushes. It’s the service and staff friendliness that sets this hotel apart. Enrique and his smiling team in the restaurant are exemplary. The waitresses spoke good English and could describe the dishes on the menu and even go beyond to talk about how to grow the herbs used in flavouring. Every dish was beautifully presented and almost all featured a local ingredient or Atacama aspect. Loved the Rica-Rica crème brûlée. Our bedroom was clean, large with a huge and comfortable bed and Andean wall hangings. The bathroom had a neat clerestory window shafting daylight down to basin and mirrors. Enjoyed the luxury shower. We had a patio with sofa and chairs to relax. We loved the locally woven blanket on the sofa so much that we asked to buy it - answer yes! Friendly bar where we chatted with other guests before and after dinner. Somehow they make interaction easier than many other hotels. The package includes excursions within what you pay. The lad who explained the excursion options to us five minutes after our arrival was rather confusing but he’s probably new to the hotel. I recommend the cactus hike which was a half day trek down a canyon full of six metre cacti. Manuel is an impressive guide. We opted out of the Geyser trip because of the hours of bumpy road and the temptation of the delightful grounds. We did take the courtesy car to San Pedro for a couple of hours for church, market and general atmosphere. Also walked to the Quitor hill fort about 5 minutes away. Lots to do and also good reasons to do nothing. Everything just seemed to flow well during our stay and maybe this is credit to Rosario of Guest Relations who is always ready to help out or offer good advice. Thanks.

Excursions are included and explained to you in detail the day you arrived. You choose the one you want. Some half day some full day. Some more difficult than others. We went to Moon Valley, Rainbow Valley, Rock ?, salt flat and the lagoons/lakes 4250m high in the mountains. Love all of them. Breakfast is good, dinner is ok but can be better. Salads don't have a lot of dressing and choice is limited. Dinner portion is kind of small but you can always ask for more. The fish is good. Lamb stew is good, but I have the lamb chop it is small and a bit tough. The ribs is good too. Service is great. Environment is very very good. We do have a bit of communication problem with one waitress but the front desk and excursion staffs speak good English. Highly recommended.

This beautiful resort in the Atacama desert does everything perfectly. The decor is zen like respecting the desert surroundings. Rooms are well appointed though air conditioning would have been nice. The staff are very friendly and very accommodating. The excursions are top notch with extremely knowledgeable and friendly guides. Try the mountain biking for a very unique not overly challenging mountain bike experience. The food selection and quality as well as the wines are excellent. Pools and spa also top notch. The area itself is other worldly and so interesting in its stark beauty and serenity. I highly recommend the area and this resort!

From the moment that we arrived at the Calama Airport we were in very good hands with everyone from the Alto Atacama Lodge. The lodge rooms were good, the service was very good, the food was delicious, the drivers were safe and the guides were excellent. Also, we were far far away from protesters so no worries there. Of special note, the Expedition Team at the Lodge provided good advise on which excursions we took into the Desert and took into consideration our adjustment to the altitude. This was very helpful. (All excursions were included with the room rate.) We have traveled throughout Chile many times, and while we have enjoyed all of the locations in Chile where we have been, nothing has been as special and unique as the Atacama Desert and we are delighted that we chose this lodge to be our home base there.
