There are many, many positives to Mama Ruisa. The house itself is beautifully restored, imaginatively decorated, immaculately maintained and impressively furnished. A paean to good taste. The breakfast is gorgeous - fresh juices and fruits, breads, preserves, cakes, eggs, tea, coffee, all served on the stunning veranda. Our room was not one of the best, from what I could tell, but...

Owner Jean Michel has transformed a beautiful villa into an amazing, stylish, comfortable mini hotel. Tucked away in Santa Teresa, Mama Ruis is an oasis in a challenging city. We enjoyed lazing by the pool in the lush garden, but also staring out from our bedroom (Amazon) down the hills and across the bay of the city. The decor of...

A beautiful house, in the characterful area of Santa Teresa, in Rio. Our room was large with an outdoor area for a lovely breakfast overlooking Rio. Flavia & Lydia, are lovely ladies, who do everything to make your stay wonderful. There is some traffic noise & on Friday & Saturday nights music can be heard but I would not hesitate...

This is a beautiful old family home that has been lightly converted into a small hotel. The area of Santa Teresa is quiet, largely residential, and an interesting neighbourhood to explore. Our room was very large and opened out on to a balcony that ran the length of the property, and looked down across Santa Teresa. Overall the setting was...

The house / Villa is very beautiful and impressing. Our room was very big and the furniture and whole decoration very beautiful and lovely. Old furniture mixed with some modern accessories. Tasty breakfast was served on our own veranda with a wonderful view to Rio. The area of the hotel has nice Bars and Restaurants around and we felt very...

If you wish for a quiet stay in Rio, perhaps in old quaint Santa Teresa district then you couldn't be in a better hotel. It is a smallish establishment offering wonderful accommodation with uphill views of Rio and the sea. The hotel is very stylishly decorated with interesting pictures, figurines and other artefacts. The reception staff are always around to...

Mama Ruisa is a quiet oasis of comfort and luxury in Santa Teresa. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and very comfortable. The staff (esp Jean MIchelle) was extraordinarily attentive and pleasant - helped us make our stay in Rio really memorable. Will definitely stay there on our next visit to Rio - hopefully for a longer time.

Staying in Santa Teresa

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.
