Pretty influenced by Trip advisor in booking this hotel as nearly all comments were favourable. ( I did wonder if the Hotel management were writing a few of them, maybe thats just Scottish cynicism) I figured if some people were unhappy there would be at least a few bad reports so gave it a go. For the money I have...

Nicely situated hotel, about 150 yards to the beach. Staff were very friendly and always helpful. They would give out towels from the reception, change your money up for you and book cabs. They also do tours through the hotel, but we found the same tours 40 to 50 percent cheaper elsewhere. Room was very good and clean, with a...

This hotel is the best value to be found in Copacabana. Excellent Service, FREE Internet Cable access in your room, clean moderate size rooms, great buffet breakfast (other meals at the restaurant are horrible)and super location. You can’t get better, we tried. I recommending using the internet as they have much better rates than the walk up (difference of $30)....

Staff were really helpful and spoke English - which was very helpful considering my lack of Portuguese. Yes small rooms, but very clean and free internet a nice touch (if you have your own laptop). Convenient location for sole, female traveler as many restaurants close by. Beach only a short walk away. Would definitely recommend.

I've stayed at several hotels in Rio over the years, the J W Marriott is my favorite, but the cost is high. The Martinique is no JW Marriott, but for the price I was very pleased. The location is very good and the rooms are clean. The 05 rooms on each floor may be the smallest and seem to be...

My husband and I just came back from Rio last week. We arrived at the International Airport GIG and took a bus (company name: Real) that takes you to the city for only US$ 4.00 per person (8 reales per person) The first impression of Rio is not good when you arrive at night, not only because the airport is...

This hotel was just fabulous. We arrived early in the morning before we could check-in, and they happily stored our baggage for us. Everyone was very helpful. The front desk, the doormen, etc. The rooms were great. However, the bathrooms really need an exhaust fan. I felt as if I were going to suffocate in all of the steam from...

Staying in Copacabana

Neighbourhood Profile
Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.

I've just recently booked up a holiday for Rio next March at the Windsor Martinique having wanted to visit for many years. Now I've been well aware of the problems with crime in the favellas and had no intention of visiting them. It is disturbing though that I've heard media reports of a sharp rise in tourist muggings and gangs of youths 'dragnetting' beach areas like Copacabana and Ipanema. Buses from poor areas being stopped at roadblocks before entering the tourist zones and vigilante reprisals. This all sounds pretty awful now frankly

We are a couple in our 50s and 60s and are pasty skinned Scots hardly likely to pass for locals however hard we try to look like them. We will be staying at the Windsor Martinique hotel on the south end of Copacabana and I notice on google earth that there is a favella barely 400 yards away from us on a steep hill . I would very interested to hear of anyones recent experiences in this area? We would also like to go out at night for dinner but this is a definite no no according to the comments I've read elsewhere on the forum here.

The more I read here the more I'm dreading going and of telling my other half what I've discovered because this was my idea in the first place ! Brazil will be our 50th country and Rio one of the 200+ cities we have visited including in many third world countries too. I'm a seasoned traveller but I cannot honestly say I've been quite as apprehensive about going to anywhere before having read right through this long thread and the many attached reports.

This is the last thing you want to know before going on holiday is that you will be a target :(
