While traveling in Brazil, we tried to book four nights at the Martinique Copa after reading all these reviews stating this hotel is 'excellent'. I didn't really like the hotel's way of online booking; it's not realtime. We'd already booked a domestic flight to Rio and had to wait some time to get a reply to our request and it...

My friend and I stayed at the Martinique hotel over the Thanksgiving weekend. The hotel is very close to the beach. The rooms are clean and confortable and the staff is very helpful. The room was worth the money. You are wondering about the BUT....... The Martinique is rated the number one singles hotel in Rio, but you are not...

I booked this hotel after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor and I can tell you the Martinique Copa Hotel lived up to my expectations. Great service, clean, tidy rooms and a block from the beach. The staff at reception even arranged for our laundry (that we dropped at the laundromat ourselfs the day before) to be delivered to our room...

We stayed there for four night and the place is great. I won’t repeat what many others have said – clean rooms, good breakfast, great location half a block from the beach, very helpful English-speaking front desk staff, and on the downside small rooms – and will instead focus on a couple other things. The beach is wonderful. The hotel...

I stayed at this hotel for a week. After reading the great reviews on this site I decided to book, and I was no disappointed. It's located so close to the beach. People made it seem like you had to walk really far. It's not even 50 metres from the main avenue. The hotel staff was great, especially the door...

Wow! Great location first off. 1 minute walk to Copacabana. 15 min walk to Ipanema. Grocery store on the corner. Beach towels are complimentary. Breakfast spread is wonderful. Staff speaks wonderful English and eager to assist and advise. Beds were comfy and showers are quite nice. The rooms are clean. I hosted a mini-party in my room and the housekeeping...

Having read the reviews we chose this place and overall it was a very good choice. Location is excellent.....100m from the beach at Copacabana and also at the Ipanema end so a 10 min walk to centre of Ipanema. The rooms are not special but plenty hot water, decent size, small TV etc. For the money ($120 or so) I...

Pretty influenced by Trip advisor in booking this hotel as nearly all comments were favourable. ( I did wonder if the Hotel management were writing a few of them, maybe thats just Scottish cynicism) I figured if some people were unhappy there would be at least a few bad reports so gave it a go. For the money I have...

Nicely situated hotel, about 150 yards to the beach. Staff were very friendly and always helpful. They would give out towels from the reception, change your money up for you and book cabs. They also do tours through the hotel, but we found the same tours 40 to 50 percent cheaper elsewhere. Room was very good and clean, with a...

Staying in Copacabana

Neighbourhood Profile
Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.

I've just recently booked up a holiday for Rio next March at the Windsor Martinique having wanted to visit for many years. Now I've been well aware of the problems with crime in the favellas and had no intention of visiting them. It is disturbing though that I've heard media reports of a sharp rise in tourist muggings and gangs of youths 'dragnetting' beach areas like Copacabana and Ipanema. Buses from poor areas being stopped at roadblocks before entering the tourist zones and vigilante reprisals. This all sounds pretty awful now frankly

We are a couple in our 50s and 60s and are pasty skinned Scots hardly likely to pass for locals however hard we try to look like them. We will be staying at the Windsor Martinique hotel on the south end of Copacabana and I notice on google earth that there is a favella barely 400 yards away from us on a steep hill . I would very interested to hear of anyones recent experiences in this area? We would also like to go out at night for dinner but this is a definite no no according to the comments I've read elsewhere on the forum here.

The more I read here the more I'm dreading going and of telling my other half what I've discovered because this was my idea in the first place ! Brazil will be our 50th country and Rio one of the 200+ cities we have visited including in many third world countries too. I'm a seasoned traveller but I cannot honestly say I've been quite as apprehensive about going to anywhere before having read right through this long thread and the many attached reports.

This is the last thing you want to know before going on holiday is that you will be a target :(
