We looked at literally hundreds of locations throughout the area of Copacabana, Leblon, Ipanema and on and on for the best all around place. We chose the Windsor Martinique for it's price, ratings and location. We were not disappointed. The staff was fun and professional. The room was clean and we had a slight view of the water and the...

Only booked a standard room which was small but very neat and very clean. Location is a 2 minute walk from Copacabana Beach. At the end of the street basically. Nice restaurants close by and a chemist almost across the road. Beware of peddlers. They're everywhere but mainly on the beach. $5 Caipirinhas on the beach. The staff are very...

This hotel is located at one end of Copacabana beach so you can conveniently walk to Ipanema Beach which is a much more upmarket area. The rooms, breakfast, service etc was all good. The hotel receptionists spoke excellent English and were very helpful in giving advice for trips and the local area. This is especially useful as the standard of...

I spent 8 nights in this hotel and it was a good choice. This hotel has a fantastic location, between the end of Copacabana and the beginning of Ipanema. Although I read from other travelers that nearby there is a favela (which is not exactly nearby but 2 blocks away) I consider the area very safe. Copacabana beach is 3...

Staying in Copacabana

Neighbourhood Profile
Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.

I've just recently booked up a holiday for Rio next March at the Windsor Martinique having wanted to visit for many years. Now I've been well aware of the problems with crime in the favellas and had no intention of visiting them. It is disturbing though that I've heard media reports of a sharp rise in tourist muggings and gangs of youths 'dragnetting' beach areas like Copacabana and Ipanema. Buses from poor areas being stopped at roadblocks before entering the tourist zones and vigilante reprisals. This all sounds pretty awful now frankly

We are a couple in our 50s and 60s and are pasty skinned Scots hardly likely to pass for locals however hard we try to look like them. We will be staying at the Windsor Martinique hotel on the south end of Copacabana and I notice on google earth that there is a favella barely 400 yards away from us on a steep hill . I would very interested to hear of anyones recent experiences in this area? We would also like to go out at night for dinner but this is a definite no no according to the comments I've read elsewhere on the forum here.

The more I read here the more I'm dreading going and of telling my other half what I've discovered because this was my idea in the first place ! Brazil will be our 50th country and Rio one of the 200+ cities we have visited including in many third world countries too. I'm a seasoned traveller but I cannot honestly say I've been quite as apprehensive about going to anywhere before having read right through this long thread and the many attached reports.

This is the last thing you want to know before going on holiday is that you will be a target :(
