The Copacabana Palace, A Belmond Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, garners acclaim for its luxurious amenities including a sumptuous pool, beach service, and delectable dining options. Guests revel in the grand yet intimate atmosphere, finding a harmonious blend of classic and contemporary styles.
The spacious rooms offer ocean vistas, though a few visitors have mentioned noise disturbances and a need for updated decor. The hotel's cleanliness and service receive high marks for professionalism and friendliness, yet its value is occasionally questioned in light of the premium pricing.

35 years ago at the age of 22 i visited Rio and passed by this hotel, saying to myself someday I hope to stay here. Time has passed. As you might notice, I stay at a lot of excellent hotels. This is an exceptionally good one. We stayed 3 nights and had a suite plus connecting room looking toward the beach. Because the windows are color tinted, the view is not as good as you'd get if they had large poster windows, but it is nice and the room is quiet of street noise. The room locations are convenient to the elevators. The suite had a large living room, there were nice amenities on arrival and replenished, and the bathroom was very nice (although the shower did not drain well, and that was not fixed and was probably the way it was built). The hotel's location is perfect in Copacabana. Use the hotel's concierge to book VIP arrival and transport to and from the airport; a regular car (non-armored) is fine. The city is somewhat safer and cleaner than it was 35 years ago and they have built a decent highway to the airport so you don't have to drive through urban streets in bad neighborhoods. Nevertheless, you need to use caution walking outside at night and look out for your cellphone. Food at this hotel is in the top 10%. Breakfast here is chock-full of interesting and well-made pastries and breads and is one of the most impressive breakfast buffets in the world for its quality of items. Dinner here at the main restaurant featured an interesting menu with a wide variety of items, all excellent. We ate there two nights. We didn't go to the Italian restaurant because it forces you to eat something close to a 10 course meal, which we didn't want. There is a gelateria out front with really cool flavors, but we had no room! The pool is excellent, as is the gym. Had everything you'd want. I wasn't happy that the gym closes at 10, but they will let you stay later if you ask. Unfortunately, I got locked in the gym when they let me stay later and didn't exactly kick-butt to get me out of there quickly. They gave me a free airport transfer to make up though. If you get locked in the gym, there is a phone there by the stairs that I didn't notice and i was super glad i had taken my cellphone with me. Only silly thing here is they give you cans of water with flip tops and once you open the can, you can't close it. That's really useless for going around the city. They should have plastic bottles for their tourist guests. The hotel has beautiful public rooms and you feel a part of the city's history staying here. My kids can't wait to come back for Carnivale and the parties they have at the hotel. You get a beautiful impression of Rio staying here and feel that the staff in the hotel know who you are and are looking after your stay. That's important in a city like Rio. Concierge sent us to a nice restaurant and was very responsive pre-arrival. I don't know if I will be revisiting Rio, but if I did, this hotel would be the no-brainer first choice.

Dear 649ic, We found your testimony very interesting and impressive, especially considering that it was 35 years ago that you got in contact with the Hotel. We noticed in your detailed report, for example, that you highlighted the accommodations, the view, our history, the silence, the cuisine, the breakfast, the pool, the gym and the concierge. However, we noticed two points interspersed in your words regarding the shower, for which we apologize. We have a technical team on call that is at guests' disposal at any time. Another point worth mentioning is that the canned water at our reception is usually very popular, for example, for sustainable reasons, avoiding the use of plastic. However, in the accommodations, we have bottles available and if you need additional water, you can request them from our guest service. Thank you once again for your kind words and we hope that your kids will be able to return during Carnival. Best regards, Ulisses Marreiros General Manager.

A hotel with a lot of history that is noticed once we arrive. Decoration very well achieved but always keeping the initial trace of the hotel. Spacious rooms. Guest reception 5 stars, from the portier, reception and all staff. Guests are thrilled with little surprises as soon as they arrive in the room. Irreprensible cleanliness. All care after handling the room is exceptional, leaving custom markers for books and for cleaning glasses. The restaurant Pergula has a charming and welcoming decoration. The staff are very friendly and available. It's a pity the table could be more varied. The breakfast is fabulous!!! The pool is not very sunny, but the sun loungers are super comfortable.

Impeccable accommodation! A classic structure with a sophisticated feel, every detail preserved from the original structure elevates the quality of the hotel. The service is the highlight of the stay, especially at the reception. All the staff are very attentive and available. The room has a great structure, the daily cleaning and organization make it very comfortable, not to mention the windows that have excellent soundproofing, you can't hear anything outside! The location is great, a good starting point for anywhere, not to mention that we are just a step away from the beach! The restaurants are of the highest quality!

I was immediately struck by the welcoming atmosphere and the staff's genuine desire to ensure a perfect stay. The rooms are sanctuaries of comfort, with high-quality linens and excellent soundproofing. The public areas are inviting and well-maintained, creating spaces that work equally well for casual meetings or quiet contemplation. Every detail feels considered and refined

This is my third time staying at Copacabana Palace and unfortunately it will be my last. We stayed in the tower wing (room 151) in a suite with a pool and ocean view. The room itself is very spacious and the view is lovely but it is very dated and the carpeted floors are disgusting. I will provide photos but there were red dots on the carpet (someone’s old blood??) and it was extremely dirty-looking. For a five star Belmond property costing 750 USD per night, get a steam cleaner! We relayed our concerns to the hotel manager who told us next year they plan on closing the tower wing for renovations. It should be closed now. Other that the room (which gets one star), the pool and food were excellent (five stars), hence I split the difference. Service was overall excellent; however, they provided us with a free bottle of brut rose Copacabana Palace champagne in our room upon our arrival and when we asked for them to chill it for us at 4pm to be ready when we returned to our room at 6pm, well that wasn’t done which was frustrating. For the price, stay at Emiliano or Fasano if you want to be near the beach with more modern, clean rooms.

Dear scott2478, We sincerely appreciate your feedback and thank you for choosing to stay at our hotel for the third time. We are pleased to hear your compliments regarding the pool, the general service of our staff, view and our cuisine. However, we have taken careful note of your comments about your accommodation and the issue involving the champagne bottle. Please accept our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience and miscommunication. Rest assured that we will reinforce our procedures to prevent such issues in the future. Regarding the carpet, it is important to mention that both it and all carpeted areas undergo a constant and routine deep cleaning and sanitization program. Unfortunately, the small red spots (actually made of paint) you referred to can no longer be removed. We are attentive to all aspects of improvement and are working diligently in this direction, considering projects and renovation actions for the short, medium, and long term. If you would like to provide any additional information that you think may be useful to us, please visit our website in the 'Contact Us' section. Your message will be forwarded to the Hotel Management office. Best regards, Ulisses Marreiros General Manager

There are not enough superlatives to describe our stay at the Palace as it was an exceptional stay from start to finish. This fabulous hotel is an old-world stunner with modern charm. We arrived on my daughter's 30th birthday and I had written ahead to guest relations to help make it special. When we arrived, our standard room was upgraded to a gorgeous beach front room and when my daughter opened the door she was greeted by balloons, champagne, a custom made, dairy-free birthday cake, and a framed photo of my daughter and me. It couldn't have been more special, and I cannot thank Ms. Ingrid Souza of Guest Relations enough. She went above and beyond to provide an incomparable birthday surprise and she checked in throughout our multi-night stay to ensure everything was perfect. Leo at the front desk provided an exceptionally warm welcome, and remembered our names and greeted us every time we walked by the front desk. For those with food allergies, the hotel took the utmost care to ensure that there were plenty of meal options, and they even had a separate section for gluten free items with a separate toaster. Mee Restaurant was a highlight for birthday dinner. One of our best meals ever. We spent a good deal of time at the spa, which was wonderful. The pool area is gorgeous, the bed and room amenities were perfect, and there was a safe, private beach area right across the street. The entire staff was attentive, warm and welcoming. If we could have stayed a week, we would have, but we will certainly return, maybe not so much for Rio, but certainly to enjoy this glorious, exceptional hotel.

I was thinking about going back to Rio and the last time I was there I stayed at the Cup. I loved the hotel but I want to report what happened to me and yes, I will be back but I will not stay in the Cup. Two things I will highlight: - I'm Portuguese. I noticed that there was a monopoly of chairs and the chair guys who almost ran to meet some Brazilian ladies (I realized they should already be known on the spot and should leave good towels!) soon ran to meet them, while we had to wait a lot of time to get some towels; - back these years and after having traveled all over the world and have been to all continents, poor and rich countries, from Congo, Australia and New York and never happened what happened to me here. At the check in none of my various cards passed in the machine. I was told that it was normal for some banks to block their cards for the first time in Brazil. They suggested leaving a high value for the first night and I went to raise more money (about two thousand dollars). Not even the first night would cost that much. They put the money in the safe. The next day he left his room and went to have breakfast at the Pergula. When I came back to get my room card was already locked. There they unlocked and I went to call the banks and everything resolved. I went to the reception and after the payment they gave me the money that was kept in the safe. All very cold and of total antipathy. $2,000 was worth a lot more than one night and I didn't need this whole theater. If I wasn't so young then I don't think I'd have been quiet. I can tell you that the hotel is super smelly and a mim but the insecurity in the surrounding is brutal. Less than 1 km from a side street is well visible a favela.
If the facilities and restaurants are wonderful, the staff are no longer up to a 5-star hotel, with the exception of the lady responsible for cleaning the floor where she was. That was a general and of an impressive care and attention.
Maybe I'll come back one day to see if management has improved, but I'm just not going to be stuck on a flight that arrives almost midnight in such a dangerous city

There were several issues with the room. At our arrival we felt a smell of "humidity" on the room. We though it might be because the room was old so we let it pass. Then I tried to book a massage at the spa, however the telephone in the living room didn't work properly. These two things were only an omen of the things to come, as at least 3 times the toilette was clogged and didn't flush. The first time we reported it there was no solution. The shower also was clogged and the water didn't drain, causing it to flood the bathroom. We were told that the shower drain was "slow" which is obviously a non-answer. With the toilette clogged I had to use the "public" toilette as an emergency while someone solved the problem. Apart from that, the bedroom TV smart apps didn't work so we couldn't use them. I understand the Copacabana is a 100 years old now, but having Youtube and Netflix on a TV is a must these days. During breakfast there were two other issues: one time the forks on the table were dirty with left over food which is disgusting, this is something I really didn't expect the hotel would failt at. Then another day, there was a plastic food label on the smoked haddock. Other issues: The WiFi disconnected seemingly at random and constantly; The air conditioning vents in the bedroom were dirty; there was a spider web in the spa relaxation room; the balcony doors were extremely hard to open. Overall, while the room was nice, all of these issues really threw the experience down the toilette and sadly, that didn't even flush. Only the very last day the shower issues were solved, which is dissapointing.

We last stayed at the CP in 2016 and had a wonderful experience so decided to extend our stay attending a conference for another two days to stay at the CP again. Maybe it's good to just leave the wonderful memories of a place intact and not try to recreate the experience.
It started pre-check in when I was sent the pre-check in email with the wrong name and dates of stay. In this day and age of privacy concerns this is unacceptable and much more care should be taken. At check in I asked about the room upgrade that could have been offered if available and was told that "you have the room you paid for" by the somewhat surly clerk. He did not identify the benefits that came with my booking through Visa Infinite Luxury hotel collection (which normally happens when one books through AMEX FHR) but when asked he said that we had the room 45 minutes early so that was the benefit. On check out when I asked for a 12.30pm check out, as once again late check out is a perk, when available, which in my experience is always agreed to in a 5 star hotel, the receptionist said "NO" and only agreed when we said our departure to the airport was scheduled for 12.45 and we were hoping to have a quick swim and walk on the beach before a shower and check out.
Turn down service was not done due to us apparently having a do not disturb sign on the door which was totally not the case. As the water is not potable one relies on the evening service for drinking water.
The breakfast was very disappointing- eggs to order served hard boiled when requested soft inside, poor selection of items including processed cheese only, very few savoury items and a lot of sweet pastry which is really not our choice of food. In terms of how this compares with most other hotels of this calibre I would give it a 1 out of 5. We had just spent 5 nights at the Grand Hyatt in Barra and all aspects of the GH were better than the CP.
The good to balance out this negative review was that the drinks at the pool bar were fantastic and snacks provided were replenished without asking.
All in all this hotel does not live up to its reputation and it was a huge disappointment. To add insult to injury, I reviewed my cc charge this morning and have been overcharged by $500! I have yet to be provided the requested invoice from our stay. I assumed it would be popped under our door or sent via email on departure but neither of those transpired.

My family and I stayed at the The Copacabana Palace for 3 nights in Rio. This is an old historic hotel but it's been kept up well. The spaces, including our room which had a view, has soaring tall ceilings - something newer more modern hotels does not offer. We had 2 rooms which adjoined with a living room between us and they rolled in a cot for the living room. It was an extremely comfortable set up for a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids - including 2 teenagers).
The staff was very service oriented, and sent me a text in advance asking me the names and ages of our kids. Then on Christmas, they had bags with their names on it that contained nice gifts inside for each of them! They had a VERY authentic looking Santa Clause with Mrs. Clause, and elves to take pictures with the guests, right in the lobby. This was such a nice photo opportunity! It seems like everyday they had a "gift" that they would leave with us. One of them were small christmas ornaments of Christo, the Redeemer. It was so nice!
They offered a huge variety of food for their breakfast buffet, including what seemed to be an endless selection of pastries. The location was very convenient, right in front of the Beach. Although it could be busy at times. We always felt very safe in the area. The pool was very kid friendly, as was the hotel in general. Lots of families. We spent Christmas Eve at the hotel, where they had a special Christmas dinner prepared (buffet) which was delicious! The hotel arranged a private tour of the city with a tour guide named "Tatiana" and she was fabulous.

Hello,
Though we've never done it, except for the time we stayed there, I'm quite certain you can! Our Carioca friends have gone there there for drinks and the Sunday brunch. Feel free to just walk in and double check with Ricardo Giglio at the reception; he is very friendly and speaks fluent English. Hope you have a safe and enjoyable stay in the Cidade Maravilhosa.
