From the outside it didn’t look like anything special and we were worried that we had booked the wrong place!

How wrong we were, the location for carnival was great. The staff were so helpful especially as we spoke little Portuguese, they ensured that we were safe and knew where we were going. They booked tours for us and arranged taxis.

The rooms are old but it goes with the theme of the hotel, they are cleaned daily and are spacious.

We extended our stay by 2 additional nights as we were so happy.

Thanks to George and the team for making us feel so welcome and safe!

When the taxi dropped us off outside the pousada it looked like a derelict building! But what a surprise!!! Inside this pousada/hotel is a stunning old colonial building with original floorboards and beautifully furnished. The breakfast room has awesome views of the bay from three huge windows. We were upgraded to a loft room which had two levels. Bathroom and lounge area on the ground floor with a little wooden staircase leading to a spacey bedroom with twin beds and a decent sized wardrobe. Just steps down the corridor was a balcony terrace with more amazing views of the bay. Perfect for sunset drinks and nibbles! Such amazing value! Staff were all friendly with one English speaking who was so helpful. I would recommend this hotel for location, friendliness, cleanliness and even though updated it has also kept its colonial decor but in a fresh way.

I booked this place through ebookers.com, a site I had never used, because I was having problems booking through my normal channels. Their reviews of this place were good, the booking.com reviews were generally good too and I didn't find the place on tripadvisor because it can be called different names (hotel, pousada, colonial or not). I filed a scathing review of that place on ebookers and they didn't post it! Which explains why their score looks good: they don't post negative reviews. I will *never* use that site again, that's for sure.

Anyway, this place has some of the most misleading photos I have seen, which partly explains why they're still able to get bookings. The common areas have been partly remodeled but the rooms have not. The rooms are awful. Ours was tiny, with a slanted floor bad enough to cause the nightstand drawers to open by themselves. The bed was very incomfortable, there are windows on top of the door and, any time someone walks through the halls, the room lights up as much has the corridor itself. The shower was bad, the bathroom fan so noisy we couldn't even turn the lights on because it was on the same switch.

This place is also supposed to have a great location (5/5 on ebookers) and be in the historical district. Well, it technically is but it is 2 blocks from the safe patrolled areas, which means that you have to walk down a pretty scary street with beggars, homeless, and other unsavory characters to get to it.

Anyway, after one almost sleepless night there, we decided to bail. There was no way we would spend 4 nights there! We asked for a refund but they of course refused. The desk folks were friendly and nice but the manager was horrible. We argued for 15 minutes with him and left.

Avoid that place! There are plenty of nice pousadas in the safe areas! And even cheaper than that dump!!
Thank Chris B

We were quite pleased overall with our four nights in Hotel Chile. The views from the public balcony and the dining room are what you expect from a hotel that costs three times as much, and this alone makes it worth the stay for the bargain traveler. The rooms are clean and the breakfast is good with friendly, competent service. One block from the elevator to the lower city and two blocks to the center of the old town. Unfortunately the two blocks surrounding the hotel are dismal, but again, for the budget traveler this can be overlooked. If I returned to Salvador I would probably stay in a different part of city, but I would recommend this spot for bargain hunters interested in staying in and exploring central Salvador.

The entrance is awful but walk in & it gets better.we stayed 6 nights during the World Cup so paid premium prices but overall we was happy with the experience.the rooms are not modern but ours had fantastic views of the harbour & were cleaned to a good standard daily.
The reception staff were helpful but English was limited.they do organise cheaper fixed price private airport transfers when asked. The breakfast is good with stunning views but they did have an ant infestation which seemed to be ignored in the dining area.
The bathrooms and bedrooms are a basic 2 star but the location is great.be careful at night & be prepared to be pestered once out of the main door.
Would we go back?yes we would.
