Family group of 14 with toddlers, children and adults. Breakfast was great, rooms are clean and comfortable and bathhouse was enjoyed by all ages. Stairs are a bit scary for the mothers with the toddlers but were manageable and the corridors were chilly but the rooms and futons were toasty. A great experience

We feel really lucky we stayed at this place. We were only in Nagano until our next hotel was available so just picked somewhere that looked decent, but this turned into one of the best stays of our whole trip. What a gem! The family who run it are super friendly, the place had such character and history, and the...

The room was large and the futons comfortable; it included a basin and a covered balcony area where we could sit and sip tea while looking at the main street below. The ryokan interior, of wood, is interesting and indicative of a long history. The location is great for visiting Zenkoji Temple and the shops along the main street below....

Stayed here for a night on a solo trip to Nagano. The single room I had was clean, possibly a bit tired around the edges but the TV was good and futon comfortable. The bathing area, again clean but perhaps a bit tired in areas. The staff were really friendly and the breakfast was good. The price for a single...

Thus is a charming family run ryokan. It's well located for Zenkoji. Not many restaurants around though for evening meals. The ryokan breakfast is fantastic and not to be missed. The owners are very welcoming. We stayed in a large room which was newly renovated. Very comfortable futons and a lovely room. The bathroom was very nice too. The old...

We had a very pleasant stay at this ryokan that's over a 100 yrs old. The interior is still original, very clean and with very steep stairs; no elevators. The owners Syotaru san and Katuyo san were very gracious, kind and thoughtful. As mentioned in previous ta reviews, their English is limited, but we had no issues communicating with each...

We (thirty-something married couple) spent two nights at Shimizuya Ryokan in December 2015. This was our first ryokan experience (so we can't really compare it to anything else) but we had a spectacularly good time. The room was huge compared to all other places we stayed at in Japan (check out my other reviews) and they have a wonderful onsen/spa...

This is a nice place managed by an older couple who are extremely friendly and serviceminded. Little English is spoken. It was also the only time during my stay in Japan that I received a full 90 degrees bow after checking out. One of the most unbelievable special services was that - after I descended from the stairs to go...

Good location a few minutes walk from the Zenkoji Temple (the main attraction in town) and 15-20 minutes pleasant walk from the JR Nagano station. Lots of convenience stores and restaurants nearby. This is a 160 year old ryokan, a maze of steep wooden staircases so not suitable for anyone with mobilty or balance problems. The facilities are shared -...

We had a nice and big room to the street, we enjoyed the kimono, the green tea, and the table with chairs. It was of course not brand new, but well kept and very clean. Smoking in the vestibule was a plus too. It was our first Japanese breakfast, and it was beautiful, delicious and well done. The whole house...
