We spent 5 nights here. The room was very spacious by Japanese standards. Clean, nicely appointed in a Japanese sort of way. Toilet separate from the bath/shower which was nice but toilet ran frequently so we had to call for help. Onsen baths were very nice and pretty and temperature of water was perfect. We had the breakfast and dinner...

Staff are very nice and pleasant though last day we were there a male staff worker walked into our room twice without ringing bell or knocking. Maybe something lost in translation but was weird. Overall this place is hugely popular for Japanese families, not really foreign tourists it seems. Biggest disappointment was the place is seriously dated and frankly cheap...

We loved our experience in this Ryokan! Very clean, floor beds, very traditional. We didnt know (but it wasnt that bad) that the showers are shared females showers, shared males showers! Group showering haha! Not sure if they have rooms with private showers so remember to ask if you care. The only thing we little struggled with, is their staff...

For a real Ryokan experience with luxury touches in the center of everything, this is one the best places to stay in Kyoto. It's a 5 minute walk to the market, which is an experience In Itself and where you can have little bites of odd and wonderful food typical of the region. Back to the Ryokan, it's a nondescript...

This ryokan is not cheap but the value you get is excellent! Located very centrally and with easy access to the subway, this ryokan combines the best of traditional and modern. Small gestures like tea and sweets on your arrival or mini-gifts like chopsticks and cozy socks are a nice touch. It even has a private onsen on site that...

This ryokan is quite expensive so, being ours a low cost trip, we only booked one night. Well, it was amazing! the room was huge with typical Japanese beds, service perfect, we didn't try any food, very good location as well. The onsen downstairs was nice and relaxing but a must is..the shiatsu massage!! really don't miss it, it's not...

The location is really beautiful, a traditional Japanese Inn in the heart of Kyoto. The rooms are large, clean and quiet, essentially furnished with very relaxing colours. The onsen are was also really nice: spacious, clean and peaceful. The staff was the kindest I've ever met, the price is high but that's what you pay in Japan to stay in...

The room was large and very comfortable. It was really clean. All guests were also quiet and we roughly enjoyed our 4 nights there. The whole place, even public areas was clean, quite and peaceful. Enjoyed the bath as well. All guests should try it!

This was our first experience of staying in Japanese Ryokan. Prior to the trip, I expected this Ryokan should have nice decoration in the room because of the price. We paid around 400 plus USD for a normal room with breakfast. (I can stay in Ritz Carlton in Osaka with this price). The decoration and furniture of the room is...

This is a lovely place to stay in the heart of the older part of Kyoto, with small streets and individual shops. The market is also very close by. The rooms are traditional and laid out ready for sleep whilst you are out. You are given the impression that you are the only guests as everything flows so seamlessly, but...

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
