We felt pretty lucky to stay here. The room was beautiful on the ground floor looking into the garden. More than beautiful, it was stunning. Host was gracious and very accomodating. The location was perfect for your exploring of the old streets and nearby Gion. Delightfully traditional stay, one of the highlights of our trip.

We stayed for a week and had a lovely time. The location is in one of the premiers lanes in old Gion. Mrs Uemura was unfailingly kind - sort of your miniature Japanese grandmother. She is a delight. The Japanese breakfast changed every day and the place has a quaint old world charm.

This is and absolute gem! A old Japanese lady runs this guesthouse and has done so for 60 years. Only 4 rooms which make you feel like you are in a private home. Mrs. Uemura is very nice and helpful. The breakfast is delicious, Japanese or western. Bathroom is shared and the toilets, but there are 3 toilets for 4... More

We lived in Tokyo for 8 years and did a good bit of traveling around the country, trying all sorts of accommodations. The Ryokan Uemura is our favorite of all. It all starts with the charming owner, Uemura-san, whose hospitality started with meeting us at the taxi and ended with a goodbye wave at the taxi stand 48 hours later.... More

This place is awesome! The single room has a lovely table by which you can sit and just enjoy the peace and serenity of the place. It's very clean and has a very homely feel to it. IMO, it's one of the closest to what a typical Japanese will experience in a traditional home setting. Guests are provided with a... More

This is a charming ryokan with a nice room that has everything you need in it, window seats, a wash basin with toiletries, comfortable futons, and a nice night light. Although the toilets are shared, there are more than enough to go around. I counted 3 to 4 toilets in the ryokan, and I never had to wait. There is... More

We stayed at Ryokan Uemura for just one day but it was a fantastic experience. Uemura-san was incredibly friendly and hospitable. Uemura-san has been running the ryokan for over 50 years and the place is beautifully maintained. The location of the ryokan is in a quiet, authentic part of old Kyoto and another highlight was spotting four geishas trotting along... More

Absolutely not worth the hassle and price. Location-wise, this Ryokan is fine but not great since you have to take buses anyway to see many of the attractions. The area in the immediate surroundings doesn't offer many restaurants so you have to plan dinner quite early given the curfew (10 Pm). The Kyoto station area, for example, would have been... More

I booked a last minute trip to Kyoto in the peak of the sakura/cherry blossom season, so there weren't a lot of accommodation options available. This little ryokan is quite popular so I was lucky that there was a cancelled booking at this place just when I was looking around at booking sites. It's a very small ryokan run by... More

The reviews below really say it all about this place. The owner is a wonderful older lady, perhaps in her 70's who runs this small Japanese style 'inn' by herself. She has enough English to assist you with all your needs and provides a nice home cooked western(ish) style breakfast in the morning. It's a little run dun in parts... More
