I sadly spent only one night at Ryokan Shimizu in Kyoto before heading back to Osaka for business. It's proximity to Kyoto station was very handy for this. Although near the main station it was in a lovely quite backstreet of 2 to 3 storied dwellings. Reception was very friendly with excellent English. The rooms were clean and peaceful, the...

We stayed one week at the Ryokan Shimizu and had a beautiful stay there. The staff was very kind and attentive and answered all questions we had. They also speak english. In addition, there is a lot of information material available (maps, plans, etc.) which can be used for free. There is also a small hot bath which can be...

We stayed here during the middle of winter. It proved to be an ideal base to explore Kyoto from, It was our first ryokan experience in Japan. It was such an easy place to get to from the train station (just follow the instructions on their website). The staff were friendly and happy to answer our questions about Kyoto and...

No problems bookiung online. We arrived late at night therefore took a taxi from Kyoto station however it's a fairly short and easy walk (every...

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at Ryokan Shimizu and loved it. The staff were always polite and informative. We loved the hot lemon tea that was served to us when we returned after a cold winters day walking around Kyoto! It rained and the ryokan provided us umbrellas. We have only stayed in 2 other ryokans and...

We were fortunate to get the last available room at this Ryoken. At the end of a long day travelling to Kyoto, we were met with a smile and hot drink and shown to our very clean room. It provided everything we needed and there was care evident in the details. The Ryoken is so close to the train and...

The service was impeccable! My hubby and I enjoyed our stay.. the service staff were very helpful, and I was totally touched when they even offered us the heat packs when the weather was freezing cold. It is also pretty close to Kyoto Station - about 10 mins walk which makes it a convenient location. However, I would suggest that...

What a beautiful place. Lots of traditional charm, but super-modern also (heated toilet so nice in winter!) Don't miss reserving the bath at least once. Can't wait to come back to stay again. Located in a good neighborhood with lots of good wandering opportunities. Having lived in Japan, we really enjoyed soaking up the ambiance of the place and city.

This ryokan is a fantatic deal. I have stayed in various comparable places in Kyoto, but at double the price. I was impressed with the attention to detail and extra little touches. These included a hot cup of tea upon arrival and a handy hot pack to take with me as I went out into the cold winter evening. Book...

My husband and I recently spent two nights at the Ryokan Shimizu. We chose this Ryokan mainly because of the reviews it received on Trip Advisor. I must say that all of the reviews I have read are quite accurate and we were very happy with our decision. The price was unbeatable for the location and I feel that it...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
