We had a great stay at this Ryokan. The location is fantastic, very close to the station and we walked to many attractions from there. So many temples, places to eat and see around. The ryokan is simple , but clean and comfortable. We had a room with a private shower, had to use the common toilet, which was fine.... More

We had the Japanese style room with bathtoom. The room was very clean with traditional futon bedding on the floor. Fecilities for making green tea, small TV and bath/shower. Staff were Freindly and helpful with enough English to get by. Good location near the Kyoto train station. Laundry on 2nd floor: wash 300 Yen, dry 100 Yen per 30 mins.

I would give a 5 star to this place, because I think it is worth for a 5 either, however, for my personal taste it is a 4. Staff is very and nice helpful, some of them speak English too. The room we got was just next to the Japanese style garden with a small pond. It really has the... More

The location was hard to beat. Very short walk from Kyoto Station on a quiet street. It's pretty dated and low-key with not much interaction from the staff, but served our bare-bones purposes well. It's also very thoroughly Japanese is you're looking for a traditional Japanese experience (sliding doors, tatami, the works).

With help from tourist Information at the Station found Hotel quite easy. We booked a room with en-suite shower. There was two rooms with tatami matting, one with low table and other with the beds plus the shower room. The shower room did have drainage issues and smelt a little but once door was closed was fine. Did have a... More

This hotel was the most expensive during our 2-week stay in Japan but it seems to be a standard for Kyoto, one of the most expensive cities in this country. The staff was extremely friendly and their limited English was not a problem. We booked a double room which was very wide but had a private bathroom without any heating... More

Ryokan good quality for the money (I booked for $ 35 per night). Spacious room in Japanese style, TV, tea-cooler on the 2.5 liter, mini-balcony, daily cleaning service. Air conditioning. Free wi-fi in the room (running on the street next to ryokan). The shared shower (with hairdryer) and a toilet (the room has a sink). I settled for 2.5 hours... More

Stayed here for one night after a long flight from New Zealand, and was booked in by a friend. Very basic facility - and talk about culture shock! Shared bathroom down the hallway, and the hallway was freezing cold (it was December after all). The yukata in the room had blood on it from the previous user, so was put... More

Let's start with the positives: this traditional Japanese inn is about 10 minutes walk to Kyoto train station and has big tatami rooms. It in-room facilities include free WI-FI (fast too), tea set, futon and blanket, heater, towel and yukata. Its shared toilet and bathroom are clean there's hot water. The inn has a small garden at the back and... More

Room good after lugging cases up a second flight of very narrow stairs. Spacious room furnished traditionally. Beware of pillows (like breeze blocks) fantastic location for travelling around, very near to station. Beware though if you leave the station by the wrong exit you've had it.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
