The hotel is central. Easy to walk or catch trains/subway/buses to various locations. (The transport system in Kyoto is full of non-integrated transport lines) The room was larger than others I have had in Japan, the bathroom was the usual small compact. The twin beds were very comfortable. It was clean but was lacking a safe. The hotel did offer...

This hotel is centrally located. Only 2 station away from kyoto station. Take subway karasuma line to Shijo station (exit 6). The room is nice and clean. Bathroom fully equipped with necessary toiletries. Only one thing, however, wifi is so slow and signal is unstable. It keeps disconnects every 3 mins or so make it impossible for me to download...

I stayed here for three nights in August, it was approx 25 mins walk from Kyoto station (quite hard going in the heat with heavy rucksacks) so was happy to arrive at the hotel. The reception area is lovely and although our triple room was absolutely fine for our needs it was a little tired looking in comparison. The room...

This hotel is adequate, clean, comfortable, average. Nothing extraordinarily extravagant. Decent location. Starbucks near lobby is nice and convenient for morning coffee and breakfast. Short walks to local public transportation. Price is typical for Japanese hotel of this size/location etc.

I only stayed in this hotel overnight - it was perfect for a short stay. The room is not particularly spacious, and the bathroom was the smallest I had seen in a hotel the whole time I was in Japan, however, it was perfect for an overnight stay. The bed was very comfy and the bathroom was exceptionally clean. The...

I really enjoyed the Karasuma Kyoto hotel. I'm a classic movie buff and this hotel reminded me of something you might see in a movie set in the 1960's....very mid-century modern. That being said, don't think this is some sort of blast from the past hotel and completely outmoded. I know a few people have mentioned the older elevators and...

We loved this hotel, Beautiful room, very comfortable beds and friendly staff. The bathroom was spacious and very nice, the decorations modern and tasteful. We stayed on the top floor and had a gorgeous view of the cityscape below.

Very welcoming hotel! They changed my room at no extra charge as my agent had booked a twin room but as I was travelling solo they moved me to a room with a Queen bed in it. They also, for no charge, held my bag over Sunday as I went to Koyasan and would be returning to the hotel. It...

Very good choice if you want to explore Kyoto. Very close to the metro station, clean rooms and decent prices. Of course everything in Japan is super expensive but this hotel has value for money offers. Don't forget to use all the buttons in the bathroom!

This hotel was clean, quiet and very convenient to the local subway. Rooms decent size. We had 2 rooms as 2 adults 2 teen kids. Only single beds for hubby and I, which were comfortable but not how we like it. 2 stops from main Kyoto station which has great eating. The hotel is also close enough to walk to...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
