Looks nice from ground level. Very well located. Very nice and open reception service. But the rooms are terribly slow and not clean. Toilet small and looks like toilet in RV. I do not come back there again.

If you are looking for a budget hotel in central Kyoto, this is a good option. The location is 3 minutes from many buses and a metro station. Rooms are small but very clean and the shower is good though there are issues with its ventilation. Breakfast has both basic Western and Japanese options. When there is a group, places... More

Clean, functional, small kitchen, English speaking staff, laundry facilities and great value. As most hotel rooms in Japan it is small but unless you are living in the hotel, who cares? We stayed for 2 1/2 weeks and found it a good central location, right next to a major subway station and all the major bus lines also cross the... More

We've now been at the Palaceside for 9 days. A major drawing card for this hotel is the fact that English is spoken at the front desk, and the hotel restaurant offers quality traditional Japanese plus Western fare. Rooms are very small, dated, but clean. Service is outstanding....all in all this hotel is a very good value. Location is excellent... More

I'm currently staying at this hotel - last of 3 on an organised tour. The hotel is basically clean with friendly staff, excellent free wifi in the rooms and the meals I've had quite good. But but again the rooms are really poor. Small and very dated. One reviewer refers to renovations being done but I see no evidence of... More

Not sure of the star rating but for me its definitely a 2/3 *. Our room 439 and others were similar was very small. Nowhere to put the two large cases we had and also no drawers at all. There was a small hanging space near the door but the lighting there was very poor. We did have a sofa... More

I stayed in this hotel for a couple of days whilst on business in Kyoto. The hotel is a fairly standard Japanese business-style hotel, with small to mid sized rooms and the ubiquitous moulded plastic bathrooms. I thought that compared with some business hotels that I've used in Japan, the hotel felt quite dated; the rooms were a bit worn... More

Ideal location, a quiet area across from the Imperial Garden and a short walk to the subway, also walking distance to Doshisha University. Cultural landmarks all around (e.g., birthplace of the great 9th century statesman Michizane.) Friendly, helpful, multinational staff (Japan, Syria, Myanmar, Nepal, etc.). Library. Communal kitchen. Very quiet. The building could use some cosmetic renovations, the lobby furniture... More

Nice hotel on walking distance from the imperial palace and subway. Good breakfast. The hotelrooms have each own wifi. The rent you bikes if needed. The hotel could use a facelift as specially the rooms.

The location is excellent. This hotel is literally right beside the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Also, just two blocks to public transport and (longer) walking distance to many attractions. The only suggestion I would have is that they should have air purifiers in every room like the APA hotel chain does (as the allergens in Japan are difficult for some people).

Staying in Nishijin District

Neighbourhood Profile
Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.
