The Watazen ryokan is very clean, convenient and service is great. It is also very spacious. Staff is very friendly and helpful. It is very near to the Nishiki Market. Although we only stay a night but we have wonderful time.

Watazen Ryokan is such a great place to stay in if visiting Kyoto. We booked room packages that come with dinner served in your room. They have what they call the "F-Kaiseki" dinner (a multiple course dinner; "F" for foreign; the kaiseki dinner is tailored a bit to suit foreigner palate), or a shabu-shabu (hot pot) dinner, both of which...

Highly recommend you take a cab if you are not familiar with the area Room was only ready at 4pm so we went around and fell in...

We stayed here for three days and were glad we did. The experience was refreshing and we left with great respect for the Japanese culture. The staff were particularly professional and friendly - they really go an extra mile to ensure the stay was as pleasant as possible. The bath house were empty when we visited so we were lucky...

Excellent staff and service, strategic location, spacious room, tradtional vibe with modern amenities and a great onsen- everything you ask and wish for is here. This ryokan is highly recommended! It is also not as expensive as other ryokans, so great value for money.

I really enjoyed my stay at Ryokan Watazen. It gave you both the traditional ryokan experience with the hotel comfort. The rooms are traditional ryokan style with sliding doors, bamboo floors, matts set on the ground for sleeping. But, it still has an hotel feel with elevators and hallways and no curfews. I read at more traditional ryokans, there are...

Staying at Watazen Ryokan was a great experience. The staff were very responsive and attentive. The Japanese dinner and breakfast were delicious. The location was very convenient, 3 mins walk to the Nishiki market, a century old paper shop was next door, a shopping centre was only 5 mins walk away and Lawson was just around the corner. Would definitely...

quite simple ryokan with good service. staff are very smiley and helpful. had dinners and breakfast while there. Food is not exceptional and would suggest to try the many other restaurants nearby. it's a stone throw away from nishiki market and shi jio shopping street - which means it's well located.

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
