I stayed for 2 nights in this hostel and I had a great experience there. The manager ( forgot his name) was the sweetest thing ever. Very helpful with touristic information and tips about the city and on top of it, was teaching me some basic survival japanese sentences ;). Great location, about 15/20 min walk to Kyoto Station, but... More

We stayed at the lady's dorm, which was a bit too small for 8 persons and their bags. The atmosphere was good: it looked really traditional and was very clean. The kitchen was too small and there wasn't enough equipment too prepare a meal (a knife would have been nice, for example, haha). The location was good, there is a... More

The location is convenient, and the price for the dorms (2500yen) is quite attractive. Sadly the Guest house only has 2 western showers and lacks the more authentic and enjoyable bath found in some of the other nearby Ryokans.

Maybe the guy was just having a bad day, I have no idea. But I showed up in the evening instead of in the morning. Somewhere in the fine print it says that they cancel your reservation if you do that. This host was by far the rudest person I met on my entire trip in Japan. I always look... More

Pros: location, 20 mins walkink from Kyoto St. Cons: Staff: there's a guy called Takeshi (one who uses hat and lenses) that do their best to do my whole stay as upleasant as possible. Three days, three discusions with him. Not only for me, i listen a girl discussing with him because he refused to give her the internet password,... More

Was very excited to begin exploring Kyoto, was a little disappointed that the people at the hostel wouldn't let us drop off our bags early before the 4:00 pm check in time. They warned us on check in that it was a traditional hostel with many paper walls but the sound level at night was definitely too high and should... More

Stayed in the tatami dorms, which look new. The whole place seems nee. Its clean, nice bathrooms, full kitchen, plenty of areas to hang out in. Close to he main train station, cheap bus ride to the nightlife areas. Super chill staff that speak english really well.

I don't wanna stay here again. A receptionist guy always talked with me without smile but for foreigner, he talked with smile:( Additionally when I went there before check in time just to leave my baggage. He looked like he got annoyed When I went to the reception after check in time... More

Room is facing the door and next to the street so a little noise to be expected (as well as from the dining room crowd above). Tatami room size is big, usual by Jap standards for its pricing.. The guesthouse experience may be a tad too biosterous/rowdy... a first for me, while overall experience is not bad but would choose... More

I stayed there because I could not get on an overnight train to tokyo. The hostel is around 15 minutes walk from the Kyoto station. Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
